CAR-ROOF.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 268,758, dated December 5, 1882,

Nash ville, in the county of Davidson and State of Tennessee,have invented a new and valuable Improvement in Car-Roofs; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon.

This invention relates to roofs for railwaycars; and it consists in the construction and novel arrangement hereinafter specific I, and particularly pointed out in the claims.

The letters A and B respectively represent boards, ,which form sections of my car-roof, having one or more channels, 0, on their upper surfaces. On each extreme upper edge of these boards is a raised rib, D, which forms a wall for a channel. On the inner side of this rib D, and extending into the board below the channel, is a saw-kerf, a, extending the entire length of the board, and of sufficient width only to receive and hold the metallic cap next mentioned. A like saw-kerf is formed in the edge of each board, and always on an inclination, as shown in the drawings.

The letter H represents a metallic cap, preferably of galvanized iron, which has the form of the segment of a cylinder, and is of the same length as the roofing to which it is attached, The boards of the roof are placed side by side at their edges, and are united by passing the flanges of the cap into the sawkerfs, as shown on Fig. 1 of the drawings. After the caps are thus placed in position, I press them down to duty and make the joints of the boards secure by means of the cleats G. These cleats are preferably constructed of galvanized iron, and are secured in position and made removable by means of screws 0, passed through their respective ends, as shown.

The boards of my car-roof are usually pre pared for use by an infusion of creosote in a steam-tight cylinder, and are doweled together in the usual manner. water-channels by the raised ribs on the upper surface of the boards,,said ribs also serve to protect the edges of the boards when packed upon each other for transportation. Cleats are sometimes also attached to thelower sides of the boards, as shown by the letter Not the drawings, to give additional strength to the roof.

What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

The combination of the cap H and cleats G with the boards A B, the latter having sawkerfs a, substantially as specified.
