Description

(MqdeL) S. L. 80 0. L. DAVIDSON.
GAR COUPLING.
No. 268,633. Patented Dec. 5, 1882.
WITNESSES INVENTOR: W 1 .Z' ,LMJWV /6 MW BY W ATTORNEYS.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
STEPHEN L. DAVIDSON AND CHESTER L. DAVIDSON, OF VIRDEN, ILLINOIS.
CAR-COUPLING.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N 0. 268,633, dated December 5, 1882.
Application filed May 13, 1882. (ModeL) To all whom it mag/concern:
Be it known that we, STEPHEN L. DAVID- SON and CHESTER L. DAVIDSON, of Virden, in the county of -Macoupin and State of Illinois, have invented a new and Improved Oar- (Jouplingofwhich the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The invention consists inthe combination, with a draw-head having a recessed side wing for receiving the'eoupling-pin when the same is not in use, of a longitudinally-movabletransverse sha-ft held on the end of the car, and provided with an arm to which the coupling- .pin is pivoted.
The invention also consists in the combination, with a draw-head, of a chain attached to a transverse shaft on the end of the car and to the link ,in the draw-head, which chain passes through an aperture in the draw-head, whereby the link can be drawn partially into the draw-head and held horizontally by winding part of the chain on the shaft.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all thefigures.
Figure 1 is a plan view of the ends of two cars provided with ourimproved car-coupling.
Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional elevation of the same on the line m m, Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a crosssectional elevation of the winged draw-head with the two recesses and apertures.
The draw-headA is provided with a linkreceiving aperture and with a'pin-receiving aperture in the usual manner, and in the top of'the draw-head a recess, B, with inclined sides, is formed for the purpose of guiding the coupling-pin O in the corresponding aperture in the draw-head. The draw-head A is provided at its outer end with a wing, D, provided with an aperture from top to bottom, the sides of which are inclined or beveled. The coupling-pin O is pivoted to the end of arm E of a shaft, F, passing loosely through longitudinal eyes or loops G on the lower part of the end of the car, so that this shaft can be moved in the direction of its length and can be turned on its axis, which loops G projeot from the end of the car as far as the bufferspring lets the draw-head move under or into- A chain or equivalent device, J, is
on the end of the car or passing through loops or eyes 0, which shaft is provided at the ends with rings or handles N. By winding the chain J on the shaft M the link Kis drawn into the draw-head I and is held horizontally. When the cars come together the link passes into the link-opening of the draw-head A, and the pin 0 is lowered by turning the shalt F. The pin 0 passes through the link K, and thereby the cars are coupled. If. the cars are to be uncoupled, the pin 0 is raised, the shaft Fis moved in the direction of its length, and the pin U is. lowered into the recess in the wing D, so as to be out of the way and permit the coupling-link to enter the drawhead A.
The cars can be provided at both ends with draw-heads A, or at one end with a drawhead, A, and at the opposite end with adrawhead, I, as may be desired.
Havingthusfully described ourinvention, we claim as new and desire tosecure by Letters Patent- 1. The draw-head A, constructed with a reicess, B, in its top, and with a recessed wing,
D, substantially as shown and described, and for the purpose set forth.
2. The combination, with the shaft F, carrying pin (J by its arm E, of the elongated loopbearings G to insure dropping of the coupling-pin in the apertures of the longitudinallysliding draw-head, substantially as shown and described.
3. The combination, with the draw-head A, provided with a recessed wing, D, of the coupling-pin .0, and the longitudinally-movable shaft F, provided with an arm E, to shown and described, and for the purpose set which the coupling-pin is pivoted, substanforth.-
tially as herein shown and described, and'for STEPHEN L. DAVIDSON.
the purpose set forth. CHESTER L. DAVIDSON 4. The combination, with the draw-head I, Witnesses:
of the link K, the chain J, and the shaft M ALVA Ross,
on the end of the ear, substantially as herein F. N. MARTIN.
