To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EDWARD P. S. AN- DREWS, of (lamp Verde, in the county of Yavapai and Territory of Arizona, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Ships Berths, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to berths of vessels which are hung to swing with the motion of the vessel, and so as to retain under such motion a level position, for an illustration of which reference is hereby had to the Letters Patentof the United Statesissned to me, dated November 23, 1875, No. 170,324.
The present improvements consist of an arrangement and combination of fastening-bolts and of a weight or weights for the berth, as will hereinafter fully appear, reference being had to theaccompanying plate of drawings, in Which Figure 1 is a plan view of a ships berth. Fig. 2 is a transverse vertical section on line 2 2, Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a side elevation; and Figs. 4 and 5 views in detail on an enlarged scale, Fig. 4= being a plan, and Fig. 5 a vertical section on. line 5 5, Fig. 4E, and which will be hereinafter particularly referred to.
In the drawings, Ais a frame, made of wood or other suitable material, of a size for a ships berth. This frame A has head and foot pieces B and 0, each of which is hung by pivot-pins a to the walls D of the cabin, and all so that the berth can freely swing because of the roll or motion of the vessel.
E is a bracket attached to the under side of the berth A, one at each end thereof. Each bracket is vertical and weighted at its lower portion, L, in a manner to bring the berth con tinually to a level if the berth is free to swing upon its pivots, so that the person occupying the berth will not feel the influence of the rolling motion of the vessel, and be therefore protected against the attacks of sea-sickness.

These sockets and bolts are in a radialline with the axes of the berthpivots, and the bolts 12 are arranged to enter into and engage with mortises fin the floor of the cabin, located in suitable position for such engagement when the berth A is in its normal position of rest. The bolts are shouldered to prevent their. dropping out of their sockets, and each has a chain, 9, connected to it. Each chain 9 passes from its bolt over a guide-pulley, h, hung upon the under side of the berth, and thence to an opening, I, in one sideof the berth, and preferably over guidepulleys there located, and, being joined,'they are continued as onechain, m, upward at the same side of the berth, and hung to an arm, n, of a lever, F, fulcrumed upon brackets G, attached to the upper edge, 10, of the berth. This lever is arranged (see Figs.4 and 5) more particularly for the bolts to be free by their own gravity to engage with their mortises when it is in one position, and by swinging the lever over into the position shown by dotted lines, Fig. 5, to simultaneously raise both bolts out of their mortises and so hold them.
By means of bolts 1;, arranged as above described,the berth can be locked againstswing ing on its center pins, or released to such swinging movement, according as may be desired, and all by a proper operation simply 0 one lever, F.
H is one side rail of the berth, hinged at its lower edge thereto, so as to be swung downward, and thus placed out of the way, rendering the berth the better adapted for persons to sit upon it.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure .by Letters Patent, 1s-- 1. A swinging berth, A,having under brackets, E, one at each end, provided with sockets d and bolts 1), said bolts being arranged to fit in the mortises f in the floor, and connected by chains g m to a lever, F, pivoted to the side of the berth, for operation substantially as and for the purpose specified.
2. Aswinging berth,A,havinguuderbrackets, E, one at each end, which brackets are weighted at their lower portion, L, and are provided with sockets at and bolts 1), said bolts being arranged to tit in the mortises f in the floor, and connected by chains 9 m to a lever, F, pivoted to the side of the berth, for operation substantially as and for the purpose specified. 1
