The method of attaching a button to cloth, according to the present invention, consists in bridling the button by introducing into two of the holes of said button a thread having two pointed ends, and which is held under the cloth by a pressure cap, which fits resiliently over a tube, through which said two ends are passed and turned outwardly between the tube and cap, the tube having a flange bearing on the reverse side of the cloth.

The device for putting the method into practice consists of a thread of suitable length and composed of several independent separate strands, the common ends of which are rendered pointed and penetrating, a tube shaped like an amphora with a base flange bearing on the reverse side of the cloth, and open at top, and a cap provided with a resilient part adapted to be fastened, by pressure, onto the top of said tube.

With the present invention, the advantages offered by the rapidity and economy of the operation of fastening the button, are supplemented by the fact that the cloth to which it is applied, is not harmed through excessive wear of attaching threads used alone; the large bearing surface of the tube on the cloth is a guarantee for the protection of the latter.

As shown in Fig. 1, I is the button having a pair of thread holes; 2 is the thread which has its ends passed through the said thread holes thereof, and after piercing the piece of cloth 3 pass through the bore of the tube 4 and diverge outwardly thereof.

A cap 5 is provided with a resilient ring 6 adapted to snap over an external bead about the small end of the tube 4, thus clamping thereagainst the two diverging portions of the thread and consequently holding the button in place.

The thread 2 has on each of said ends a needleshaped tip, which may consist either in a stifiening of said end, or in the application of a metal point I, as shown in Fig. 2, or in the application of a point 8 integral with a sleeve 9 which is clamped on the end of the thread as shown in Fig. 3, or in forming the point with a. shank l0 and providing a sleeve II, which on clamping unites the tip to the end of the thread as indicated in Fig. 4, or in providing a sleeve I2 adapted to be clamped over the end of the thread, the end of Which is shaped like a flute-mouth as shown in Fig. 5.

With the form of embodiment indicated in Fig. 8, no resilient ring is provided, but the clasticity necessary to clamp the two portions of the thread against the outer Wall of the tube is provided by the cap member, which has its suitably-shaped border [3 forming a male member fitted into a suitable border 14 of the tube forming a female member.

Having now particularly described the nature of my invention and in what manner the same is to be performed, I declare that what I claim is:

In a device for attaching a button. to cloth, the combination of a circular member having an axial, tapered bore therethrough, an external flange projecting peripherally of the major end of said bore, and an external bead about the minor end of said bore, said flange forming a base on which to mount the device on the cloth; a circular cap having an inwardly turned peripheral lip; a resilient ring carried loosely in said cap on said lip and having an internal. diameter less than the external diameter of said bead; and at least one flexible, compressible thread, said cap being adapted to press said ring over said bead, and said ring being adapted to clamp said thread between said ring and said member when said thread is passed through said bore, and between said bead and said ring.
