SAFETY BOX Filed Dec. 6, 1950 FIG. I. 5
INVENTOR.
CLAIR w. PHILLIPS Patented June 1, 1954 STATES ATENT OFFICE 1 Claim. 1
My invention relates to a safety box having the appearance of a book, and the objects thereof are to make a safety box with the appearance of a hook that will consist of a few parts and be economical to manufacture, and one so construct-- ed as to be resistant against heat and flame so that the contents of the box will be protected at all times against such hazards.
A still further object of my invention is to provide a safety box which can be made fireproof and of such unique construction that it can be placed either in a bookcase or laid on a table, having a neat and. tidy appearance, and yet being of such construction as to be a security receptacle for valuable papers and money or the like, against hazards of fire and flame.
With these and other objects in view, the invention consists of certain novel features, combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter more fully described, pointed out in the accompanying drawing, and claimed.
In the drawing,
Figure 1 is a plan view of my safety box in fully opened position, and as made in accordance with my invention;
Figure 2 is a fragmentary, end elevational view, partly broken away, illustrating the safety box in normal closed and locked position;
Figure 3 is a fragmentary perspective view, partly in section, illustratin the construction in cooperation with the coacting parts; and
Figure 4 is a fragmentary perspective view, similar to Figure 3, in partly open position.
Referring to the drawing, the numeral 5 designates a book type box structure having a pair of sections, a cover section 6 and a compartment section 1, respectively, which sections constitute when closed a structure having the appearance of a book, and these sections 6 and 7, respectively, are hinged together, as at 8, along one of their edges, as illustrated in all of the figures of the drawing, and this particular box may be made of any material suitable for the purpose, but preferably of a heat or flame resisting material, such as steel or the like, and each section is provided with suitable asbestos lining 9. The position and manner of positioning will be hereinafter more fully described.
The inner face of one section, notably section I, is provided with a series of walls l0 connected together to provide a container structure or receptacle in which valuable papers or other articles are placed. The cover section 6 is also provided with a wall section II, which, when folded on its hinged joint 8 embraces the wall of section 1, and is spaced therefrom leaving an air space l2 therebetween which also provides further means for protecting the contents of the receptacle.
The walls H and 10, respectively, are provided with a suitable asbestos lining or other fireresisting material 9, and it is afiixed thereto in any suitable manner, and by virtue of the material from which the receptacle is made and the fire-resisting material 9 and the air space I2, when the receptacle is closed the safety and protection of the contents thereof are assured.
The open side and front edges of the sections are provided with a lockin structure I3, as here shown in the form of a zipper fastener, but any type of locking means may be provided. This locking means closes the sections around the open edges and holds them in fully closed position so that the contents of the interior thereof are fully protected.
The structure when manufactured will have the appearance of a book or album, the exterior is covered by any suitable covering M, such as leather or the like, and thus when the box is completed it has the appearance of a book, which is pleasant to see and at the same time provides a safety receptacle for valuables of any type against the hazards of fire, flame or water.
It is to be understood that certain minor changes may be made without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention as claimed.
What I claim as new is:
A safety box having the appearance of a book or album, comprising hinged sections, means for locking the sections in closed formation, one section provided on its interior with walls constituting a compartment, the other section having walls interiorly constituting a cover section, the walls of the cover section embracing and spaced from the walls of the compartment section to form an air space therebetween, and an insulation material covering the walls of the sections to provide a flame and fire protective compartment for the contents when the device is closed.
