MECHANICAL TELEPHONE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 267,897, dated November 21, 1882.
Application filed June 12,1882. (N0 model.)
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, HARRY '1. J onusou, of Scio, ill the county of Allegany and State of New York, have ill vent-ed a new and Improved Mechanical Telephone, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
My invention consists of an improved arrangement of the wires traversing the diaphragm for improving the vibratory action of the diaphragm.
It also consists ill the peculiar construction and arrangement of a double-diaphragm arrangement calculated to improve the efiiciency of the sound-producing qualities of the telephone; and it also consists of certain details of construction, all as hereinafter described, and pointed out in the claims.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure 1 is a front elevation of myilnproved telephone with a part of the mouth-piece broken out. Fig. 2 is a sectional elevation of the telephone, taken on line 0000 of Fig.1; and Fig. 3 is a detail of my improved arrangement of the Wires traversing the diaphragm.
At the center of the diaphragm a, I locate a button, I), for the purpose of connecting the wires 0, traversing the diaphragm, by means of studs e, so as to stretch them between studpins fat the margin of the diaphragm slightly toward but not to the center from the direct line between the opposite pins f, from which said wires are stretched,which avoids the running of the wires so close together as they do when stretched radially to the center, making acluster thereat, which is less beneficial to the vibratory action of the diaphragm. Being drawn in this way, they distribute the vibrations caused by sound-waves more perfectly and clearly than when drawn from the center. With the button thus attached to and clearer tone.

Posts may be employed instead ofthe screws and springs; but I prefer the screws, in order that the mouth-piece may be adjusted nicely with respect to the diaphragm.
The diaphragms a and h may be made of sheep-skin, silk, or other suitable material. The transmitting-line it may be made of copper, lron, brass, or cotton cord. The objects of using two diaphragms are to provide a deadair space to prevent the noises caused by the wind blowing against the line-wire, and to increase the sensitiveness of diaphragm a, by resting on the diaphragm h, which forms a kind of sounding-board that produces clear tones, and to enable the diaphragm a to vibrate much easier, wherebyitis a much better transmitter for long lines.

Having thus fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. The combination, with cords or wires 0, stretched across the diaphragm a, of the button Z) and studs e, substantially as described.
