Williamson, Portland, Oreg., assignor to Jarman-Williamson Company, a partnership Application February 13, 1950, Serial No. 143,944
This invention relates generally to the game of golf and particularly to a cart for holding and conveying golf clubs and equipment.
The main object of this invention is to construct a cart for carrying golf clubs which will hold the clubs in a manner to make them easily accessible and at the same time holding the heads of all of the clubs out of possible engagement with each other. i
The second object is to dispense with the need of the usual golf bag, thereby lowering the cost and weight of the cart as Well as providing greater accessibility to the clubs.
The third object is to so construct the unit that the same screws which hold the club supports together also serve to afiord adjustment for the various shaft sizes.
I accomplish these and other objects in 'the manner ,set forth in the following specifications as illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which:
Fig. 1 is a side elevation of the cart.
Fig. 2 is a fragmentary perspective view showing the lacing of the golf ball bags to the metal casing.
Fig. 3 is a section taken along the line 3-3 in Fi 1.
Fig. 4 is a plan of the uppermost member.
Fig. 5 is a section taken along the line 5-5 in Fig. 4.
Fig. 6 is a diagrammatic view of the holder on the supporting wheels showing how all of the club heads are held out of engagement with each other.
Like members of reference refer to the same or similar parts throughout the several views.
Referring in detail to the drawings, there is shown a cart including a pair of wheels and chassis l I, the details of which are shown in my United States Patent No. 2,443,847, and copending application, Serial No. 63,785, filed December 6, 1948, now Patent No. 2,523,893, and form no part of this invention except to form a vehicle therefor.
To the chassis H is attached a tubular frame 12 on the upper end of which is secured a clamp l3, one side of which has the lugs I4 to which is adjustably attached a handle l by means of a screw 16. The handle l5 can be dropped to the position shown in Fig. 1 when not in use or for storage or transporting purposes.
On the lower end of the frame I2 is secured a foot I! having a bolt [8 secured thereto by means of the nuts l9 and 20. The bolt [8 supports the bottom 2| around which is secured a casing 22.
A clamp 23 secures the lower end of the casing 22 to the lower end of the frame l2.
1 Claim. (Cl. 211-60) Forming a closure for the casing 22 is a cover 24 which is provided with holes 25, one for each club 25. A clamp 27 secures the upper end of the casing 22 and the cover 24 to the frame [2.
On the bottom 2| is a stepped support 28 having a plurality of supporting surfaces 29 at different elevations upon which may rest the handle end of the clubs 26. The surfaces 29 are in alignment with the axes of the holes 25 and normal thereto. Secured to the outside of the casing 22 is a ball bag 30 provided with a slide fastener 36 and attached to the metal casing 22 by means of the stitching 32.
To the clamp 13 is attached a gripper plate 33 which consists of two elongated plates 34, between which is placed a soft rubber insert 35. The parts are held together by screws 36. The assembled plate 33 is provided with slots 3'5 around its edges 38. The rubber 35 extends into the slot farther than does the metal portions 34 to protect and hold the shafts of the clubs I2. It is desirable to enlarge the inner ends of the slots 37 in excess of the open end 39 of the slots 37. An angle clip 40 is used to secure the cover 24 and casing 22 to the clamp 21.
In the operation of this cart and club holder, the handles of the various clubs 26 are inserted into the holes 25 and the shafts pressed into the rubber lined slots 31 and the clubs permitted to slide down until the butts of the handles rest on the surfaces 29.
It can be seen that the clubs are not only held in a neat and orderly manner but are held individually, thereby'protecting the clubs against injury and marring when being withdrawn or inserted.
I claim A holder for golf club shafts comprised of a pair of elongated plates having registering slots formed in the edges thereof, a resilient rubber insert disposed between said plates having corresponding slots of smaller dimension than the slots in said plates the slots in said plates and rubber inserts being larger at their innermost ends, and clamping screws between said plates and through said insert whereby said insert may be compressed and the slot dimensions may be varied.
