2 Claims.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in disposable razors.
lhe primary object of the present invention is to provide a disposable razor of a type suitable for travelers, soldiers, and the like which is light in weight, requires a minimum of storage space and which is so economical in construction, comparing most favorably to the current prices for razor blades, that it may be disposed of after a single usage.
It is a further object of the present invention to provide a disposable razor of independent two-part construction having a handle member and a blade holder which are adapted for interfitting engagement when the razor is in operative position and for disposition of the blade holder within the handle member for protecting the blade when the razor is in inoperative position.
With the above and other objects in view, our invention resides in the novel features of form, construction, arrangement, and combination of parts presently described and pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawing Figure 1 is an exploded perspective view of the handle and blade holder of a disposable razor constructed in accordance with and embodying the present invention;
Figure 2 is a perspective view of the disposable razor in operative position;
Figure 3 is a side view;
Figure 4 is a top plan view;
Figure 5 is a perspective view of the razor in inoperative position; and
Figure 6 is a modified type disposable razor handle constructed in accordance with and embodyin the present invention.
Referring now by reference characters to the drawing which illustrates preferred embodiments of the present invention, A designates a razor havin a handle i, fabricated preferably of a thermoplastic resin such as a polyacrylate, and being bent upon its longitudinal axis to provide a pair of substantially parallel wall portions 2, 3, spaced from each other by the bight 4 thereby formed. The outwardly presented or end portions of the walls 2, 3, are slightly curved toward each other for convergence, as at 5, for reasons to be shown hereinafter, and adjacent their upper margins are cut away to provide inwardly extending recesses 6, 7, respectively, having parallel upper and lower sides, which are downwardly and outwardly inclined at an angle to a plane normal to the walls 2, 3.
Provided for co-operation with the handle I is a blade holder 8, also, preferably, fabricated of a suitable thermoplastic resin such as a polyacrylate and having a length substantially equivalent to that of the handle I and a thickness slightly in excess of the distance between the converging ends of the walls 2, 3, of the handle I so that the said blade holder 8 may, when not in use, be partially housed within the bight s of the handle I, being retentively gripped between the said curved ends of the walls 2, 3, as may best be seen in Figure 5. The inherent resiliency or" the material of construction allows the said converging ends of the walls 2, 3, to yield sufficiently to permit the blade holder 8 to be withdrawn from, and inserted within, the bight i in a facile manner.
On its forward face, the holder 8 is provided centrally with a longitudinal, slot-like recess 9 extending from end to end, for snugly receiving a razor blade H], as by press or jam fitting, with its cutting edge H being presented outwardly. Beneath the recess 9 the blade holder 8 is integrally provided with a forwardly projecting portion l2 which is spacedly notched to provide a safety guard 13 for the blade [0. On its normally rearwardly presented surface the blade holder 8 is provided with a pair of recesses l4, l5, spaced by a distance substantially equal to the bight 4 of the handle I for alignment with the recesses t, '1, respectively, and being dimensioned so that the walls thereof will tightly interlock with the portions of the walls 2, 3, of the handle I inwardly of the recesses 6, 1, as may best be seen in Figure 3, for maintaining the blade it in operative position, wherein the upper and lower sides of the recesses 6, 7, will securely engage the upper and lower surfaces, respectively, of the blade holder 8.
It will be noted that with th blade holder 8 in operatively-engaged relation with the handle i, it will assume an angle to a plane normal to the walls 2, 3, coincident to that of the recesses 6, 1, whereby the blade [0 will be presented at a convenient and efiective attitude for shaving or cutting purposes.
Thus, as shown hereinabove, the blade holder 8 may be as readily and securely engaged within the recesses 6, 1, of the handle I for usage, as it may be housed retentively within the bight 4 of the said handle when not in use, with the cutting edge ll of the blade It] being directed inwardly for protection. In inoperative condition, the blade holder 8 and handle I provide a compact unit having negligible weight and requiring a minimum storage space. The low cost of manufacture of the razor A makes same competitive with currently used razors, since the cost of blades therefor will approximate the cost of the razor A and, hence, same may be discarded after the blade H] has become dull.
If desired, a modified type of handle I, as illustrated in Figure 6, may be made which is bent upon its longitudinal axis to form a pair of substantially parallel walls 2", 3, spaced from each other by the bight 4 formed thereby. Provided in the handle I adjacent the upper margin thereof is an enlarged aperture l6 which extends from substantially the midpoint of one wall 2' around the bent portion of the handle I to substantially the midpoint of the other wall 3. The upper and lower sides, of the said aperture it are downwardly and outwardly directed at an angle similar to that of the recesses 6, l, of the handle I, above described. The blade holdert is adapted for. engagement with the handle I in a like manner as with the handle all as set forth hereinabove.
It should be understood that changes and modifications in the form, construction, arrangement, and combination of the several parts of the disposable razor may be made and substituted for those herein shown and described without departing from the nature and principle of the present invention.
Having thus described our invention, what we claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1 A razor comprising a blade-holder having a back portion extending aft of the blade there-. of, and a resilient channel-shaped handle having somewhat converging flanges spaced so as to accommodate the thickness of said back portion, the said handle being slotted transverse to the axis thereof, the width of such slotting being sufficient to receive the thickness of the back portion of said blade-holder, a pair of spaced transverse notches formed in said back portion of the blade holder, the, said notches being of a width suiiicient to receive the thickness of said flanges and being spaced from each other approximately the same width as the spacing of said flanges, so constructed and arranged that the blade-holder may be mounted on the handle by the mating of its notches with the slotted portions of the handle flanges and there held se curely by the resiliency of said handle.
2. A safety razor comprising a blade holder including a guard portion, a blade grasping recess, and a back portion having a rear edge, a pair of spaced notches in and perpendicular to the rear edge of said back portion, a detachable channel-shaped stowing handle of a length at least equal to the length of the blade holder, formed of springy material and having slightly converging flanges spaced so as to receive graspingly the upper and lower surfaces of the back portion of the blade holder for stowing the blade within the handle when not in use, and flange notches across the flanges, said notches being of a width sufficient to accommodate snugly the thickness of the back portion of the blade holder and adapted to engage the spaced notches therein, the said spaced notches being so spaced as to bend the springy channel handle elastically whereby the bending resistance in the channel. handle urges the channel flanges graspingly against the blade holder notches and thus secures the blade holder in shaving position.
