My present invention relates to garmenthangers, and particularly to that class of garment-hangers that will support both a mans trousers and coat or a womans skirt and coat, and to these ends it consists in certain improvements in construction and combination of parts, hereinafter more fully described and illustrated in the accompanying drawing and more particularly pointed out in the appended claim.

In the accompanying drawing, in which similar reference characters indicate similar parts in each of the views:

Figure 1 is a front elevation of my improved garment hanger.

Figure 2 is a section taken on line 2-2 in Figure 1, looking in the direction of the arrows.

Figure 3 is a section taken on line 3-3 in Figure 1, looking in the direction of the arrows.

Figure 4 is a section taken on the line in Figure 1 looking in the direction of the arrows 4-4.

The garment hanger comprises, in combination, a coat hanger I, a hook 2 secured in the intermediate top portion thereof for the purpose of suspending garment hanger. Connected thereto there is provided a transverse member 3, and rigidly fixed thereto a member 4 coextensive therewith which constitute parts of the rear clamping jaw.

A plate member 5 is interposed and rigidly attached to the coat hanger and the transverse member 3. Connected to the plate member intermediate its length and on the foremost face thereof there is provided a block 6 of parallelogram configuration to direct or guide a tool to facilitate the spring assembly. Adjacent the perpendicular edges thereof, there are provided through elongated openings 1 and 8 to provide for passage therethrough of a tool to snap the end of the springs into the V-shaped notches hereinafter referred to.

On the plate member there are rigidly attached spaced bracket members 9 and I0 having aligned bores therein adapted to receive a fulcrum, bolt or pin II. On the confronting faces of the bracket members there are rigidly connected spring supports l2 and I3, the upper end portion of each being inclined or bevelled toward the surface of the bracket to which it is connected, to provide a V-shaped notch for the reception of the end portion of the respective coiled springs l4 and 5. The springs are made of stiff spring-wire.

In the plate member adjacent its top and situated in the middle thereof, there is provided a fixed member [6 provided with a spacer I! thereon and therebeyond a freely mounted member I 8 of rectangular configuration.

The forward clamping jaw l9 comprises the transverse members 20 and 2|, and the plate 22. Rigidly attached to the inner face of the plate member there are provided brackets 23 and 24 provided with aligned bores to receive the fulcrum, bolt or pin, adapted to maintain the jaws in assembled relationship.

In the plate there is provided a longitudinally extending through opening 25 of rectilinear configuration for the passage therethrough of the portions of the springs that are held in spaced relationship by the protuberance member 26 rigidly connected thereto.

In the plate above the aforementioned through opening there is provided a perpendicular through opening 21 into which the freely mounted member I8 extends, and when the clamp is closed is inactive therein. The dotted lines illustrate the position of the member I8 holding the jaw in open position, see Figure 1.

On the coat hanger portion of the garment hanger there may be provided removably mounted forms 28 and 29 secured in place by means of a screw 30 or the like. The forms are adapted to hold the shoulders of a coat in their conventional shape.

The plate 22 is also utilized to maintain the breast of the coat in symmetry when mounted on the coat hanger.

The operation of the device is as follows:

The garment hanger is laid on a flat horizontal plane. The front jaw is opened by forcing it back toward the back jaw. The member I8 is then turned in the proper direction to hold it in its open position. The trouser or skirt is then placed in proper position between the jaws, the member I8 is then turned to release the jaw. The springs operate to clamp the garment in the jaws and also compensates for the various thicknesses of material that may be clamped therebetween. The device is then suspended by the hook and the coat placed thereon in the usual manner.

Obviously, various changes and alterations might be made in the general form and arrangement of parts described without departing from the invention. Hence I do not wish to limit myself to the details set forth, but shall consider myself at liberty to make such changes and alterations as fairly fall within the spirit and scope of the appended claim.

Having now particularly described and ascertained the nature of my said invention, and in what manner the same is to be performed, I declare that what I claim is:

In a garment hanger, the combination of a suspension book, a coat hanger member, a lower 3 transverse portion connected to the coat hanger and which constitutes the lower part of a rear clamping jaw, a plate member interposed between the hanger member and the lower transverse portion, a longitudinally extending member mounted in the plate member, a spacer mounted thereon above the lower transverse portion connected to the coat hanger member, a rotatably mounted member of rectangular configuration mounted on the longitudinally extending member beyond the spacer, spaced brackets having therein aligned bores to receive a fulcrum connected to the front surface of the plate member, spring supports connected to the confronting faces of the aforesaid brackets and adjacent the front surface of the plate member, each spring support having its upper end sloping toward the 7. surface of the bracket to which it is connected, a

forward clamping jaw comprising longitudinally extending members, a plate member of less length than the aforementioned longitudinally extending members and connected thereto, spaced brackets on the back surface of the plate memher and laterally disposed to the brackets connected to the rear clamping jaw and having therein aligned fulcrum bores, the plate member of less length having therein a through opening of rectangular configuration centrally disposed, a spring positioning protuberance connected to the front face of the above mentioned plate member of less length, the said plate of less length having also therein above the rectangular opening a centrally disposed perpendicular through opening into which the freely mounted member extends and passes therethroughwhen the freely mounted member is turned in the alternate position to hold the clamping jaws open, a fulcrum extending through the aligned bores in the brackets, spaced coiled springs mounted on the fulcrum and laterally of the confronting faces of the brackets connected to the plate connected to the rear clamping jaw, the springs having portions extending through the opening of rectangular configuration centrally disposed in the plate member, portions of the coiled springs extending therethrough and held in spaced relationship by the protuberance connected to the front face of the plate member of less length, and th springs tensioned by having their end portions mounted in the spring supports connected to the brackets.
