Description

Jan. 5, 1954 v. 1.. PEARSON 2,664,656
IRONING BOARD COVER FASTENER Filed Aug. 27, 1951 Fig.
F /'g. 2. 38 I8 Fig.3
Vemo n Lee Pearson INVENTOR.
Patented Jan. 5, 1954 IRONIN G BOARD COVER FASTENER Vernon Lee Pearson, Medford, Oreg., assignor of one-third to George H. Jackson, Medford, Oreg- Application August 2'7, 1951, Serial No. 243,796 Claims. (01. ss-140) permit the padding and cover for an ironing board to be readily positioned thereon in a more rapid manner than heretofore had been possible. A further object of this invention is to provide a novel combination of ironing board and ironing board cover fastener that includes a plate for protecting the ironing board from excessive wear together with a turnbuckle, cable and hand wheel, which hand wheel is used for causing the turnbuckle to urge the cable into a groove formed in the ironing board so as to hold the ironing board cover in a secure manner.
Still further objects of the invention reside in the provision of an ironing board cover fastener that is strong, durable, highly efficient in operation, simple in construction and manufacture, capable of being readily installed on either a wooden or metal ironing board, and which is relatively inexpensive to produce.
These, together with the various ancillary objects of the invention which'will become apparent as the following description proceeds, are obtained by this ironing board cover fastener, a preferred embodiment of which has been illustrated in the accompanying drawings, by way of example only, wherein:
Figure 1 is a top plan view showing the ironing board cover fastener as operatively installed on an ironing board;
Figure 2 is a vertical sectional view as taken along the plane of line 2-2 in Figure 1;
Figure 3 is a vertical sectional view as taken along the plane of line 33 in Figure 2;
Figure 4 is an end elevational view of the ironing board with the ironing board cover fastener operatively installed thereon;
Figure 5 is a perspective View of the ironing board used in the present invention;
Figure 6 is a perspective view of the plate comprising one element of the present invention.
With continuing reference to the accompanying drawings, wherein like reference numerals designate similar parts throughout the various views, reference numeral I0 generally designates an ironing board which is formed with a peripheral groove [2 and which additionally has a recess I4 formed in one edge together with a centrally located notch l6.
As is conventional there is positioned on the ironing board suitable padding I8 for protecting 2 the board from the heat of the iron and also to provide a suitable ironing surface that is some what resilient.
There is first positioned within the recess M the plate generally indicated at 20 which includes an upper member which is substantially U-shaped having legs 22 and 24. A lower member having legs 26 and 28 is provided. The ends of the legs 22 and 26 are connected by a central connecting portion 36 and the legs 24 and 28 are connected by a central connecting portion 32. Thus is formed an end plate of substantially U-shape in cross section. This can be readily seen as in Figure 2. Hence, the plate may be considered as having a notch 34 formed therein which is adapted to be in alignment with the notch 16 when the plate 20 is positioned with the upper member overlying the upper surface of the board and cover and the lower member underlying the under surface of the board. Positioned within the recess [4 is a turnbuckle 36 to which the ends of the cable 38 received in the groove I2 is emplaced. A suitable cover 40 is held in position by the cable 38 pressing into the groove l2. A hand wheel 42 is provided and has an opening 44 therethrough, the turnbuckle 36 being received within the opening so as to be controlled by the wheel 42 for rotation. Hence, upon rotation of the wheel 42 the turnbuckle is also rotated thus tightening or loosening the cable 38. The wheel 42 is so positioned as to be received within the notch l6 and the notch 34 between the legs 22 and 24 and 26 and 28.
Since from the foregoing the construction and advantages of this ironing board cover fastener are readily apparent, further description is believed to be unnecessary.
However, since numerous modifications will readily occur to those skilled in the art after a consideration of the foregoing specification and accompanying drawings, it is not intended to limit the invention to the precise embodiment shown and described, but all suitable modifications and equivalents may be readily resorted to which fall within the scope of the appended claims.
Having described the invention, what is claimed as new is:
1. In combination with an ironing board having a groove extending around the edges thereof and having a recess with a centrally located notch in one end of said board, an ironing board cover fastener comprising an end plate having upper and. lower parallel U-shaped members, each of which members have substantially parallel legs, the legs of said upper member being secured to the legs of said lower member by central connecting members, a cable adapted to fit in said groove in said board, a turnbuckle connecting the ends of said cable, said turnbuckle being receivable within said recess, said end plate being positioned on said board in said recess with said upper member overlying the upper surface of the board and the lower 'membernnderlying the lower surface of "the board, a hand wheel, said hand wheel having an opening there.-
through, said turnbuckle extending through said openin and being controlledtortrotation': by
said hand wheel, said hand wheel being positioned so as to extend between,sfidle'gsfiand said notch.
2. In combination with an ironing board having a groove extending around the edges thereof and having a recess and a centrallylo cated notch in one end thereof, an ironing board cover fastenernorn prising an end :plate or substantially u -shape in cross section and having an upper member adapted to overlie the diaper surface of 'said b'oajlii and :2 lower :lnernber adapted to overlie theil ower surface of said board, a central connecting portion connecting said upper member and said :iowersmember, -a notch in said plate forminglegs in said-topper member and said lower memb'ergsai'd'plate positioned with said notch said plate in-'ali"gnment with the notch in said-boardaa cable adapted to fit ,in said groovetinsaid.-board,. a turnbuckle connecting the ends of-said cable, said turnbuckle being received within saidrecess, ,a hand wheel, having an ,openingthereuthrough, said turnbuckle extendingthrougnsaid opening and being controlled for-rotation by said hand wheel, saidhand wheel nbeingp'osi tioned in said notchin said board and said notch in said plate and between said legs;
3. The combination of -,claim;2 wherein said opening in the hand wheel :is' mzthero'rmof can elongated slot, said slot permitting movement of said hand wheel relative to said turnbuckle and into and out of engagement with said U-shaped end plate.
4. An ironing board cover fastener for an ironing board having a groove extending around the edge thereof, said fastener comprising a flexible member having the ends thereof conelected by a 'tlirhbuclilefa hand wheel carried by "said turnbuckle, a notched plate adapted to be carried by the ironing board, said hand wheel being provided with means for locking the same against-rotation, said means including projections on said hand wheel engageable in the notch ef the notched plate.
5. "Ah ironing board cover fastener for an ironing board having a groove extending around the edge thereof, said fastener comprising a flexible member having the end thereof connected by a turnbuckle, a hand wheel carried by said turnbuckle, -a notched plate adapted to .be carried by the ironing board, said hand wheel being pro- 'vided withmeans for-locking the same against rotatibn,psaid =rnea-n's including projections on .saidjhand wheel engageable in the notch or the notchedwplate, said-turnbuckle fitting in a slot in said hand wheel said hand wheel being movable relative to sa-id turnbuckle wherebysaid hand wheel may be selectively moved into .or out ofylocki-ng engagement with :saidnotched plate.
