The conventional beater of the above type has several disadvantagesJ one or the moet entstand ing of which is that the nature of its; construction makes it quite vulnerable to attack by the actioncf corrosive chemicals used in the treating of the paper-making pulp. Another disadvantage isl that once the horizontal or cross. bars are corroded to the place Where'they need replacing, it is a long and tedious task to remove all of the old bars and Wood filling therebetween and replace2 themwvith new bars and new wood filling so that the mae chine will be in proper condition to resume the treatment of paper-making stock.
Applicant being familiar with the many disadvantages of former beating equipment has de vised an inproved beater roll mechanism which' is disclosed in this application and which comprises a simple mechanism made up of several sections or units comprising interchangeable or replaceable cylindrical sections or castings which are secured in axial alinement with their adiacent edges abutting on corresponding spider members in turn secured on a mainl drive shaft. The adjacent or abutting edges of the cylindrical castings are suitably sealed against leakage, and
the outer open ends of said castings arel closed by suitable end plates secured thereto torform an enclosed hollow cylinder for replacing the above referred to inefficient. type of beatingcylinder for use in the treating of paper-making pulp material.

Description Described in specific terms the improved beater roll mechanism of the present invention comprises a main drive shaft 2t (Fig. 1) forged of suitable material, such as steel, having uniform stepped surfaces of different diameters, the largest diameter being near the center thereof. Secured in proper spaced relationship to each other on the shaft 2t are four supporting elements or spiders 2i cast of suitable material (Figs. 1, 5 and 6) and properly designed as to proportion and strength. rfhe spiders 2l are secured on the shaft 2@ by being shrunk thereon and further by means of a horizontal key-way cut in said shaft, in
cooperation with matching key-ways cut in said L diameter of the shaft 2B, and that the two out- .f
side spiders are mounted upon the next largest diametrical portions of said shaft 20.
t will be observed by referring to Figs. 5 and 6 that each of the spiders 2l has six equally spaced legs undercut near their outer ends to form faces, which are finished as at 23 to cooperate with corresponding iinished surfaces 25, (Figs. 3 and e), on six similar projections equally spaced about the internal circumference of corresponding cylindrical sections or drum members 25, made of suitable material and properly designed and constructed to efficiently fulfill their intended purpose. t will be observed that the projections on each of the cylindrical sections 25 are so spaced as to form six angular notches or recesses 26, which are uniform in shape and size and so proportioned as to pass freely over the outer ends of the legs of the spiders 2l, after said spiders have been secured in place on the shaft 2i? (Fig. l). This permits the central cylindrical sections 25 to pass freely over the projecting legs of the outer spiders 2i without the necessity of having to remove said outer spiders from the main shaft 2t, in case it is necessary to assemble or disassemble said cylindrical sections.
By referring to Fig. l it will be seen that the two righthand spiders 2i are assembled on the shaft 2B so as to face in one direction and that the two lefthand spiders are assembled on said shaft so as to face in the opposite direction. This is for convenience in assembling the sections 25 on the spiders and for removing said sections from said spiders, as in this latter case either of the central sections may be removed after rst removing its companion outer section.
It is logical in assembling the cylindrical sections 25, that one of the two central sections be placed in position first with the finished surfaces 2li thereon contacting the finished surfaces 23 on the corresponding spider 22, after which matching bolt holes in said finished surfaces are brought into alinement and said section is securely bolted in place on said spider 2i.
Next the companion outer section or member is bolted in place on its spider, and the same procedure is followed in mounting the other two sections on their spiders.
It will be noted by referring to Fig. 1 that adjacent or abutting edge surfaces of the cylindrical sections 25 have matching annular grooves cut ings 32 by means of the screws 3S.
therein and when the sections are assembled on the spiders, suitable packing material 2S is inserted in said grooves and compressed as the sections are bolted in place to seal said surfaces against the leakage of the paper-making material.
After the four cylindrical sections 25 have been securely bolted in place upon their corresponding spiders 2l, they form a hollow cylindrical member with open outer ends, and these open outer ends are closed by means of end plates 29 (Figs. l and 2) which are the same diameter as the cylindrical members 25. The disk-like end plates 25 are secured to the outer edges of the corresponding cylindrical members 25 by suitable screws 3G, and each of said end plates is provided with a suitable gasket 3| for sealing the connection between said plates and the edges of the corresponding sections 25 against the leakage of paper-makingmaterial. The two end disks 29, which are similar in every respect, have central bores therein, which freely clear the body portions of corresponding bushings si secured on opposite ends of the shaft 2t, said plates being secured to flanged portions of said bush- A suitable gasket 33 is provided between each of the plates 2Q and the iianges on the bushings 32, to seal these parts against the leakage of paper-making material.
t will be noted by referring to 3 and i that the periphery of each of the cylindrical members 25 has formed therein lateral grooves which in turn form a series of uniformly spaced ridges 3Q, said ridges being of the proper dimensions to obtain the desired beating action for properly treating the fibres of the paper-making material.
After all of the cylindrical sections f5 have been mounted upon their corresponding spiders 2l, and after the end plates 29 have been assembled thereon, the external periphery or face of said sections 25 may be trued up by either turning them in a lathe or by grinding them on a l rotary grinder, whichever is most suitable.
By referring to Figs. l and 2 it will be seen that each of the end plates 2Q has secured to the outer face thereof four curved bars 35 sometimes referred to as Bangor irons, which extend from the outer diameter of the bushings 32 to approximately the outer periphery of the cylindrical sections 25. Ilhese bars assist in the agitation of the paper-making material and also act to prevent the gathering of the heavier material in the center of the beater mechanism where the peripheral speed is not sumcient to properly throw the heavier portions of the material outwardly.
Any suitable means may be utilized for driving the shaft 2% and the beater mounted thereon at the proper speed for obtaining the desired treatment of the paper-making material.
From the foregoing description it is believed apparent to those skilled in the art that the present invention discloses an improved beater mechanism for use in the treating of paper-making material, said beater' mechanism being constructed in similar sectional units, which may be quickly and easily assembled together in the first instance to form a complete hollow cylindrical beater mechanism which is efficient in operation and so constructed as to be impervious to the leakage of liquids into the interior thereof, said sectional construction in the second instance facilitating the removal and replacement of Worn or damaged parts without the necessity of dismantling the entire beater mechanism.
While the form of mechanism herein shown and described is admirably adapted to fulfill the objects primarily stated, it is to be understood that it is not intended to. confine the invention to the one form or embodiment herein disclosed, for it is susceptible of embodiment in various other forms, without departing from the scope and spirit of the invention.
What is claimed is:
1. In an apparatus of the character described for treating paper-making material, the combination of a shaft; a plurality of solid or one piece spiders secured on the shaft at properly spaced intervals, said spiders each having a plurality of radial legs; a solid or fone-piece drum member for each spider; and projections on the interior of each drum member arranged to be removably connected to the corresponding spider legs to form a hollow cylinder of said drum members, said projections forming recesses in the drum members which provide clearance for the spider legs when said drum members are disconnected from said spiders and rotated slightly in relation thereto to permit removal or installation of any or all of said drum members for replacement or repair without disturbing any of the spiders.
2. In an apparatus of the character described for treating paper-making material, the combination of a plurality of solid or one-piece drum members adapted to be arranged edge to edge to form a hollow cylinder or beater roll; projections on the interior of each drum member; a central supporting shaft for the `drum members; a plurality of solid or one-piece drum member supporting elements secured in properly spaced relationship on the shaft; and projections on the supporting elements that match and coact with the projections on the corresponding drum members to removably connect said drum members to said supporting elements, said projections on the drum members and on the supporting elements forming recesses therebetween which provide clearance for the projections so that any or all of the drum members may be removed or installed for repair or replacement without disturbing the supporting elements, by turning said drum members slightly to aline the projections thereon with the recesses in said supporting elements.
3. In a beater roll for treating paper-making material, the combination of a plurality of similar drum members adapted to be arranged with their edges abutting to form a hollow cylinder or beater roll said drum members being of solid or one-piece construction; a central shaft for supporting the drum members; drum member supporting elements secured in properly spaced relationship on the shaft said supporting elements being of solid or one-piece construction; evenly spaced projections on the interior of the drum members; and projections on the exterior of the supporting elements spaced to match the projections on the interior of the drum members, said projections having matching holes to receive bolts to removably connect the drum members to the supporting elements, said projections on said drum members forming recesses which provide clearance for the projections on the supporting elements and said projections on the supporting elements forming recesses which provide clearance for the projections on 'the drum members, so that any or all of said drum members may be removed or installed in successive order Without removing said supporting elements from the shaft.
4. In an apparatus of the character described for treating paper-making material, the combination of a plurality of similar drum members; a shaft for rotatably supporting the drum members; a supporting element for each drum member, said supporting elements secured on the shaft and so spaced as to properly support the drum members; and coactingk projections on the interior of the drum members and the exterior of the supporting elements, said projections arranged to overlie each other and having matching holes therein to receive bolts, to removably connect said drum members in place with their adjacent edges abutting and with their peripheries matching to form a hollow cylindrical beater roll said projections forming recesses Pi therebetween, the recesses in the drum members providing clearance for the projections on the supporting elements and the recesses in the supporting elements providing clearance for the projections on the drum members so that any or all of said drum members may be successively removed beginning with the outermost drum member without disturbing the supporting elements.
5. In an apparatus of the character described for treating paper-making material, the combination of a plurality of solid or one-piece drum members constructed and arranged to have their adjacent edges abutting and their peripheries matching, to form a hollow cylinder or beater roll; a shaft for rotatably supporting the drum members; a supporting spider for each drum member, said spiders secured in proper spaced relationship on the shaft and each having a plurality of equally spaced radially disposed legs; and a plurality of equally spaced projections on the interior of each of the drum members, said projections matching and overlying the corresponding legs on the spiders, said projections and said legs having matching holes to receive bolts to removably connect said drum members to said spiders, the projections on the drum members forming. recesses therebetween, which provide clearance for the legs fof the spiders `so that said drum members may be disconnected from the corresponding spiders and turned a slight distance on their axis until the recesses are opposite the spider legs to permit said drum members to be removed or installed in successive order without disturbing the arrangement of said spiders on the shaft.
