UNITED STA-TES PATENT OEEICE.
JAMES J. JOHNSTON, OF COLUMBIANA, OHIO, ASSIGNOR TO THE UNITED STATES IMPROVEMENT COMPANY, (LIMITED,) OF SAME PLACE.
IRONING-'STOVB SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 265,821, dated October 10, 1882.`
Application led February 23, 1882. (No model.)
To all whom tt Vmay concern:
Be it known that I, JAMES J. JOHNSTON, of Columbiana, in the county of Columbiana and State of Ohio. have invented a certain new and useful Improvement 1n Ironing-Stoves; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof', reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked ro thereon.
My invention relates to an improvement in ironing-stoves; audit consists of a stove furnished with a series of detachable receptacles" for the smoothing-iron, said receptacles projecting inward, toward the center of the stove,
with the plane ot' their bottoms converging toward the Hue or pipe, the openings for said receptacles having lids covered with pivoted projecting panels, the top ot' said stove forining areservoir for heating water, said reservoir having a lid constructed in two parts and pivoled around the pipe, all ot' which will hereinafter more fully and at large appear.
To enable others skilled in theartwith which z5 my invention is most nearly co ynected to make and use the same, I will proceed to describe its construction and operation.
In the accompanying drawings, which form part of my specification, Figure l is aside elcvation ofthe stove. Fig. 2 is a vertical scction ofthe same. Fig. 3 is a top view of' the lid for closing the opening ot' the receptacle for the smoothing-irons.
Reference being had to the accompanying drawings, A represents the bottom portion ot' the body of the stove, having a grate, B, pokeropening C, and ash-pan D, said portion A rest ing upon a bottom, E, all of which parts are ot ordinary construction. The upper portion, F, 4o is furnished with a series of openings, G, for the reception ot the receptacles H. for the smoothing-irons, said receptacles being supported in the part F by means of iianges a, which tit in recesses b in the part F. The openings for the receptacles H are each furnished with a lid, I, so that when the receptacles H arc removed the lid I will close the opening G. Over the openings and lid are raised ornamental panels J, pvoted at c, and furnished with knobs at d for swinging the 5o panels sidewise when placing the smoothingirons in or removing them from the receptacles H. These panels impart an ornamental appearance to the stove and cover the joints around the lid of the stove, and alsoserve the purpose ot' a covering or lid for the receptacles H. The top K of the stove is held in place on the part F by a downwardly-projecting iange,
o. Said top F forms a reservoir for heating water, and is provided with a lid, L, consist- 6o ing ot'two parts, fand g, the partf beingpivoted on the tlue M and the part g pivoted to the partf, so that either part may be turned on its pivot for the purpose of uncovering the reservoir, the inner walls of which should be enameled or galvanized with zinc.
By. having the detachable receptacles projecting into and toward the center ofthe stove, with their bottoms converging toward the flue ofthe stove, the heat of the lire in the stove 7o is thoroughly utilized, for it strikes against the lower ends, bottom, and passes up the sides of the receptacles H, the advantage of which will be apparent without further de- Scription.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
In a stove for heating irons, the combination'ot' the part F, having openings G, recep- 8o tacles H, lids` I, pivoted panels J, and top K, forming a reservoir having pivoted lid L, all constructed, arranged, and operating substantially as herein described, and for the purpose Set forth.
JAMES J. JOHNSTON.
