A. M. DYE. BED BOTTOM.

A. M. DYE, or CLINTON, ILLINOIS.
BED-BOTTOM.
Specification of Letters Patent No. 26,575, dated December 27, 1859.
To all whom it mag concern: I Be it known that I, A. M. DYE, of Clinton, in the county of Dewitt and State of Illinois, have invented a new and Improved Bed-Bottom; and I dohereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, in which- I Figure 1, is an end view of my invention. Fig. 2, is a longitudinal vertical section of ditto taken in the line at, 00, Fig. 3; Fig. 3, is a plan or top view of ditto. I
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the several figures.
This invention relates to an improvement in that class of bed-bottoms in which wire upholstery springs are used to impart a requisite degree of elasticity. The object of the invention is to obtain a facile mode of straining or tightening the webbing of the bottom.
To enable those skilledin the art to fully understand and construct my invention I will proceed to describe it. h
A, B, represents two horizontal quadrilateral wooden frames, A, being the top and B, the bottom frame. The bottom frame B,
is formed of transverse bars, 0;,having longitudinal side strips 1), I), attached. The upper frame A, is formed of two longitudinal side strips 0, 0, connected at their ends by transverse bars cl, d. The bars d, cl, of the frame A, are connected to their side strips 0, c, by means of dovetail slides e, which are I fitted in sockets or guides 7", attached to the ends of the side strips 0. Through the sockets or guides 7", screws 9, pass longitudinally, said screws also passing through the slides e, and having nuts h, on them, which nuts bear against the inner ends of the slides e, as shown clearly in Fig. 1.
To the bars 0?, cl, strips of webbing 2', are attached at suitable distances apart, and the strips 2', have transverse stops j, of the" same material attached to them, as shown clearly in Fig. 8. The sockets or guides f, which receive the sides 0, are also of dovetail form corresponding inversely with the sides as shown clearly in Fig. 1, and the bars (1, d are consequently kept down snugly on the side strips 0,0. 1
From the above description it will be seen that the bars d, 01, may be distended or forced farther apart fromeach other byturning also rendered adjustable ontheir side strips 155 nuts 72., on the screws g, and the webbingt', j j consequently strained or stretched I tothe re f j qulred degree of tension The transverse r bars a, at the ends of the side strips 12, b,fare 1 j 0 b,- b, by means of; set 1 screws '70, passing; 1
through Oblong $10158 in the 1 side strips. This adjustment of the bars a, isrenderedj necessary to compensate for the adjustment To the transverse bars a, of the bottom" frame B, biconical wiresprings C, are atof the bars (Z, at.
tached. These springs are such as are generally used for upholsterypurposes and their 1. f
upper ends are connected to the barsol, 1d, of the upper frameAand to the transverse strips of webblng Through the bars (5, (Z,
and a, a, of the frames A, B, cords D, pass. I These cords pass vertically. through the: I
springs O, as shown olearlyfin Fig. 1, one
cordbeing employed for each row of springs, I
the cord passing through holes in the bars cl, cl. These cords may: be. lengthened or shortened by adjusting one or both of their II ends and the two frames A, B, secured nearer together or. farther .apart as desired.
The cords D, ofthe central springs C, pass through the transverse strips of webbing 3.
By adjusting the two frames A, B, nearer,
together or farther apart the. strength ofthe to the bottom. II
frames A, B, withthe springsC, interposed springs C, may be graduated as. desired so? as to impart the required degree of elasticity I between them; neither do I jclaim the cords 3 D, passing through the springs and bars as described; but, I I
I do claim as new and desire to secure Letters Patent I The attaching of the transversebars d, of
the frame A, to the side strips 0,0, by means; I 3
of the dovetail slides e, and sockets guids 7, provided with the screws g, and attachi g the bars a, of theframe B, tothe side strips: I
I), b, by means of the setlscrews k, substan-.
tially as. and for the purpose specified.
