Description

(ModeL) H. F. OAKES.
BOX EOE LETTER PAPER AND ENVELOPES J No. 265,625. Patented Oct. 10, 1882..
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
HENRY F. OAKES, OF YORK, N. Y., ASSIGNOR TO \VHITE & STOKES,
' OF SAME PLACE. I
BOX FOR LETTER-PAPER AND ENVELOPES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 265,625, dated October 10, 1882.
Application filed Angustltl, 1882. (ModeL) To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HENRY FrrcH OAKES, of New York city, county and State of New York, have invented an Improved Box for Letier-Paper and Envelopes, of which the following is a specification.
Figure l is a perspective view of my improved-box for holding letter-paper and envelopes. Fig. 2 is a vertical central section of the same.
This invention relates to a new box for conveniently holding a proper supply of note-paper or correspondents cards and of envelopes, so as to duly display its contents and allow access thereto; and itconsists in combining the box proper with an -shaped lid which is calculated to cover part of its face and one ofits ends, and which lid contains aseparate receptacle for envelopes, and is also sojointed to the box proper as to form a brace for holding it in a vertical position.
In the drawings, the letter A represents a box, made of pasteboard or of any other suitable material. at two sides, I) b, and at one face, d,- but it is open at the other end, 0, and partly closed atthe front face, where the portion f, which incloses the lower part of this face, extendsfrom the bottom part way up near to the middle. To the upper end of this portion fis hinged or suitably jointed the lid B, which is L-shaped, so that when folded up, as indicated by dotted lines in Fig. 2, its longer wing, y, will constitute a continuation of the facef of the box, While the shorter wing, 11, of the lid will close over the open end 0 of the box. The sides 2' 'i This box is closed at one end, a,
of the lid will partly overlap or be overlapped by or abut against the upper parts of the portions I) of the box. In the lid B is contained a receptacle, 0, which is open atits upper end, and which is intended to contain a package, D. of envelopes.
The box proper will hold a package, SE, of writing-paper, and also a package, F, of envelopes, as shown. The package F of envelopes will extend slightly above the point of connection between the box proper, A, and its lidD, so that when the structure is in the position shown in Fig. l the three packages D E F will be within convenient reach. hen, however, the lid is folded up, as is shown by dotted lines in Fig. 2, the package D of envelopes will be directly above the package F of envelopes. and thus the entire box will be properly tilled.
The lid B as applied will constitute a brace for holding the box in that vertical position where the user can always have the paper within proper reach as long as desired, and will thus render it unnecessary to have the box opened and reclosed after every removal of a sheet or envelope.
I claim The box A, open at one end and at part of its face, combined with the jointed L-shaped lid B and with the receptacle U, secured in said lid, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
