Patented Sept. 22, 1953 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE KNIFE SHARPENER Claude D. Arnold, Iraan, Tex. Application November 6, 1952, Serial No. 319,018
2 Claims. (Cl. 51-214) The present invention relates to new and useful improvements in sharpeners for knives or other cutting tools.
An important object of the invention is to provide a knife blade holder slidably mounted on a hone and swingable to guide the blade over the surface of the hone during reverse strokes thereof.
Another object is to construct the blade holder for supporting the blade at a uniform angle during its reverse sharpening movement to uniformly bevel both sides of the blade.
A further object is to provide a device of this character of simple and practical construction, which is efficient and reliable in operation, relatively inexpensive to manufacture, and otherwise well adapted for the purpose for which the same is intended.
These together with other objects and advantages which will become subsequently apparent reside in the details of construction and operation as more fully hereinafter described and claimed, reference being had to the accompanying drawings forming a part hereof, wherein like numerals refer to like parts throughout, and in which:
Figure 1 is a perspective View;
Figure 2 is a fragmentary longitudinal sectional view;
Figure 3 is a transverse sectional view taken on a line 33 of Figure 2; and
Figure 4 is a fragmentary sectional view showing the hone attached to a work bench.
Referring now to the drawings in detail, wherein for the purpose of illustration I have disclosed a preferred embodiment of my invention, the numeral 5 designates a base having a recess 6 in its upper surface for receiving a hone block 1 which is supported in the base with the upper surface of the hone projecting above the base. A handle 8 is secured to the end of the base.
The sides 9 of the base are formed with longitudinal slots It! in which rivets or pins II are slidable and to the outer ends of which a blade holder, designated generally as I2, is pivotally connected for vertical swinging movement on top of the hone.
Blade holder l2 comprises a pair of V-shaped legs l3 positioned at opposite sides of base 5 and pivoted at their narrow ends to the pins II. The legs [3 include a pair of diverging leg members l4 to form a V-shaped notch I5 therebetween and the leg members l4 are connected to a corresponding member of the opposite leg l3 by opposing jaw-like cross bars I6 which extend transversely above the hone. The cross bars 16 are positioned in the plane of the opposing edges of the leg members I4 to support the back edge of the blade while any desired longitudinal portion of the cutting edge of the blade, including the tip of the blade, is held in a position at the crotch portion of notch I5 to contact the surface of the hone, as the blade is moved back and forth over the hone.
The cross bars I 6 may be either of a hollow construction, as shown in Figure 2, or if preferred, may be solid and each of the diverging leg members [4 are provided with inwardly projecting pins I8 to rest on the ledge Is at the sides of base 5 to support the blade holder 12 out of wiping contact with the hone during forward and backward movement of the blade holder, while the latter supports the blade at a predetermined angle with respect to the hone to produce a most eifective bevel on the blade.
In Figure 4 of the drawing, I have illustrated the base 20 of the hone attached to a work bench 2|.
From the foregoing, the construction and operation of the device will be readily understood and further explanation is believed to be unnecessary. However, since numerous modifications and changes will readily occur to those skilled in the art, it is not desired to limit the invention to the exact construction shown and described, and accordingly all suitable modifications and equivalents may be resorted to, falling within the scope of the appended claims.
What is claimed as new is as follows:
1. A knife sharpener comprising the combination of a base having a hone block supported thereon, and a knife blade holder slidably and pivotally carried by the base for reversing the blade on the hone block, said blade holder being of substantially U-shape and straddling the hone block and including a pair of V-shaped legs positioned at opposite sides of the hone and pivoted to the base, said legs forming a V-shaped slot at their free ends to support the blade at a predetermined angle with respect to the hone during forward and backward movement of the blade holder.
2. A knife sharpener comprising the combination of a base having a hone block supported thereon and a knife blade holder slidably and pivotally carried by the base for reversing the blade on the hone block, said blade holder being of substantially U-shape and straddling the hone block and including a pair of V-shaped legs positioned at opposite sides of the hone and forming a V-shaped slot to receive the blade, and a pair forward and backward movement of the blade of opposed cross bars extending transversely of holder.
