This invention relates to stove constructions and particularly to a cook stove embodying a cabinet and top unit in which either gas or electric burners may be installed.
The stove comprises a cabinet and top unit which are separately formed, the top portion containing a splash back which is stamped as a unit with the top panel. The cabinet portion embodies side and front panels which are reinforced by an oven, a receptacle and drawer compartments. `A base portion is a separate unit which is drawn inwardly at the bottom to provide a kick recess at the front.A The top panel contains burner openings in which individual burners are supported, so related to the gas outlet nipples and the air adjusting elements as to be removable from the` openings without disturbing the top panel.
Heretofore, it has been the practice to connect all of the burnersto gas` delivering nipples situated in a row at the front of the stove.' The present invention` contemplates the use of conduits having nipples disposed adjacent to the forward edge of the burner openings in the stove top panel so that the mixing chambers on the burners can be ofthe same length or substantially the same length, permitting the burners to be removed by an upward movement from the openings in the stove top. The stove top has a deep flange at the front and sides for enclosing the conduit, valves and control elements for the top burners and those employed in the oven and The deep flange on the stove top provides a panel for the control handles employed on the switches or valves, depending on whether the stove is of electric or gas construction. The side and front panels are recessed relative to the front flange of the stove top to have the door and drawer panels flush therewith when extending to the side edges of the cabinet.
Accordingly, the main objects of this invention are: to provide a stove made of a cabinet containing side and front panels and a. top stamping containing a top and back splash panel having a deep flange about the edge which encompasses the burners and the supporting portions therefor and provides an area in which the control handles are mounted; to provide a stove top with a plurality of openings for `burners which are so constructed and mounted as to be directly removable through the openings; to form a cabinet from side and front panels which are mounted on a base element having a kick recess formed therein; to form a stove from side panels having a front panel recessed inwardly from the base element and top panel for receiving the compartment doors and drawer panels which extend to the side panels and are flush with the projecting base element and the top panel; and. in general, to provide a cook stove which is simple in construction, positive in operation and which is economical of manufacture.
Other objects and features of novelty of this invention will be specifically pointed out or will become apparent when referring, for a better understanding of the invention, to the following description taken in conjunction with the accompanying drawings, wherein:

Fig. 2 is a broken plan view of the stove illustrated in Fig. 1;
Fig. 3 is a broken side view, with parts in section, of the stove illustrated in Figs. 1 and 2, and
Fig. 4 is an enlarged sectional view of the structure illustrated in Fig. 1, taken on the line 4-4 thereof.
The stove herein illustrated has been constructed with gas burners and the attending control elements, and it is to be understood that such burners have been illustrated by way of example since they are more complicated than the electric burners and the associated controls which may be substituted therefor. It is to be understood that the stove top and cabinet of the present invention may be fitted with electric burners and the necessary control elements and circuits when an electric cooking stove is to be supplied.
` The stove comprises a top stamping 20, a cabinet 2l, and a base eleemnt 25. The cabinet is constructed from side panels 22 and 23 and the front assembly 24. The front assembly is disposed inwardly of the top and the base element 25 which has the front portion recessed at 26 to form a kick recess. At the lower portion of the cabinet above the base element, forwardly extending trackways 21 are provided in which rear wheels 28, disposed on the center line of drawers 29, are mounted for rolling movement. Pairs of wheels 3| are supported on brackets 32 at the front edge of the 4drawer compartment which extends within a pair of trackways 33 in the bottom of the drawer for supporting and guiding the front portion of the drawer thereon. A projection 34 is disposed in the trackways 33 in the bottom of the drawer which extends over the roller 3l and holds the drawer in innermost position.
The front end of the drawer supports a closure panel 35, illustrated in section in Fig. 4. A flange 36 about the top edge of the drawer abuts the inner panel element 31 and is welded thereto. The panel element 31 has an inwardly directed portion 38 which abuts the front face of the drawer and is secured thereto, preferably as by welding. The outer panel element 39 has edge flanges 4| which are projected'inwardly toward each other at 42. The inner panel element 31 has an inwardly projected flange 43 at the bottom with which the flange 42 engages. Bolts 44 retain the two panel elements 31 and 39 in secured relation, permitting the assembly and disassembly of the two panel elements when manufactured and when repairing or replacing either of the elements. As illustrated in Fig. 1, two of the drawers are mounted in the bottom of the cabinet compartment. Y
The frame element 45, as illustrated more specifically in Figs. 1, 2, and 4, supports an oven compartment 53 made up of a top stamping 54, a central stamping 55 and a bottom stamping 56. The top stamping 54 has a dome-shaped portion 69 forming a burner compartment having a bracket 51 on which one end of a burner 58 is releasably supported. The fuel-mixing conduit 5 9 of the burner extends through the front end of the stamping 54 and is supported on the nipple of the valve by which the flow of gas is controlled thereto. The central stamping 55 is of U-shape and extends across the back and the sides of the oven compartment. The side portions of the stamping have inwardly formed spaced ribs 52 upon which the utensil-supporting racks are selectively disposed. The bottom stamping 56 is constructed from the same dies from which the top stamping 54 was struck. The stamping 55 has fa recessed burner compartment 55 containing a central opening 63 and a bracket 94 which releasably supports the end of a second burner mounted therein. The top edge of the burner compartment55 supports a removable pan 85 having positioning legs 61 projecting from the underside. The fuel-mixing chamber 59 of the burner is mounted in an opening 68 in a flange onv a partition 59, which is supported on the front frame element 46, and on a rear wall panel 19. The frame element 45 contains an opening to an inner compartment 1| in which utensils, such as pots, pans, and the like, may be stored, or for a second oven compartment 53, if desired. A pair of doors 12 encloses the oven and utensil compartment, and these doors are constructed from an inner stamping 13 and an outer stamping 14 having mating ilanges, as illustrated in Fig. 6, which are secured together by suitable bolts 44. The bolts extend through an offset portion 16 near the edge of the inner stamping 13 and a flange 19 on the edge flange of the outer stampings i4. The stampings 14 are adjacent to each other and extend to the outer surface of the side panels 22 and 29 and to the edge of the stove top element to be ush therewith. The stampings .13 and 14 are reinforced by the bracing elements 15 which are welded to the stamping 14 and secured to the stamping 13 by bolts 44.
The front frame elements and 46 are provided with recesses 82 for receiving the hinges 83 which are pivoted at 84 and are provided with stop projections 85 that maintain the door in horizontal position when open. One of the wings 85 of the hinge is supported on the flange of the inner door stamping 13 by bolts 81. The pivot 84 is supported by a wing 80 which is secured by bolts 81 to the stamping 88. The stamping 88 is secured to the recessed portion 65 of the oven stamping 56 and to the front frame portions 45 and'46. This provides a support for a fuel ignitingv and delivering device 89 having a nipple 9| which projects within the mixing chamber 59 of the lowerA burner 58. A flash-back tube 92 extends between an igniting filament of the device 89 and the burner for igniting the fuel delivered to the burner. A similar igniting and gas delivering element 89 is mounted on the stamping 6| in the stove top for each burner, connected by a nipple 9| and utilizing ya nashback tube 92 by which gas delivered to the burner by the nipple is ignited thereafter.
The top stamping 20, forming the top panel 94 and a back splash panel 95, is provided withV a deep side flange 95 and front flange 91 of the same depth. The front flange may be depressed at 98 forrecessing the operating handles 99 of the valves which control the flow of gas to the burners. The top panel has large circular openings |8| and |02 at the back and front portions thereof, while smaller cylindrical openings |03 and |84 are likewise disposed at the back and front portions of the top panel with a small and large opening in adjacent relation. The burner openings, as illustrated in Fig. 2, are disposed on the left-hand side of the stove top, the righthand side being continuous and disposed above the dome portion 56 of the oven compartment. Insulating material |05 is disposed about the entire oven compartment in the space between the top, side, and rear panel and the oven stampings 54, 55, and 56. At the bottom, the stamping 88 is extended at |06 to provide a closure about the bottom recess portion 65 of the oven compartment. i
The back panel 10 encloses the rear of the stove cabinet and is supported on the pillar elements` 50 which extend along the vsides at the rear of the cabinet and project above the top edge thereof, as illustrated in Fig. 4. The pillar elements are secured by the bolts |08 to the inwardly and upwardly projecting flange |09 on the splash-back portion of the top stamping 20. Additional bolts |08 connect the pillar elements 50 to the inwardly projecting flange on the side panels 22 and 23 and to the rear flanges of the base element 24.
A panel ||.2 extends across the front frame element 45 and back panel 10 beneath the burner openings to provide a partition above the utensil compartment 1| disposed therebeneath. The panel ||2 prevents any particles of food or liquid from entering the compartment which might pass through the openings in the stove top. The up per part of the frame element 45 has an in-4 wardly projecting flange ||3' which supports a gas 4conduit |4 which is secured thereto by bolts in a suitable manner. A valve H6 is connected to the conduit for each of the burners |9 and 2|, disposed beneath the small and large openings, respectively, of the top panel. The burners |9 and 2| are of the same construction and are removable through the openings in the stove top. This is made possible by providing extensions I I'| to the valves I I6 which deliver the gas to the rear burners at points vadjacent the openings II and |03. The valve has an electric switch I I8 mounted thereon by which an electric circuit is completed when the valve is opened and is interrupted when the valve is closed. Nipples I I9 on the ends of the extensions III support the ends of the mixing chambers |2| on the burners IDI and |03. The ends |22 of the mixing chambers are guided into engagement with the nipple I|9 by troughs I 23, supported on the panel II'2. Adjusting means are provided adjacent to the valves IIB for remotely adjusting the flow of gas and air to the mixing chambers. The adjusting means are mounted in position to be engaged by a screw driver through an opening in the recessed portion 98 of the front flange 9'| which is covered by the removable operating handle 99 of the valve to hide the adjusting elements from View. When adjustment to either the gas or the air, or both, is to be made, the handle 99 is removed to permit a screw driver to be inserted through the opening in position to engage and n manipulate the adjusting elements.
It has been the practice heretofore to mount the gas delivering nipples I|9 in a row along the front edge of the stove top and to extend the mixing lchamber of the burners at the rear of the stove to engage the nozzles at the front thereof. By mounting the nipples for the rear burners adjacent to the rear opening in the stove top, like burners are employed in all of the openings which are removable from said opening Without disassembling the stove top so that an unbroken top may be employed. The openings IDI |02, |03, and |04 have downwardly and inwardly projecting flanges |00 on which an annular frame |24 of a grid |25 is supported. The grid is similar to that illustrated, described, and claimed in the patent to Alfred H. Haberstump, No. 2,422,918, issued June 24, 1947, and assigned to the assignee of the present invention. Brackets |20 are secured to the flanges |00 at the edge of the stove top openings to support the rear edge of the burner.
The top burners have a burner portion |21 of conventional form about which a drip pan |28 is disposed and secured to the burner structure. The bracket 20 engages the rear end of the drip pan and provides a support for the edge of the burner structure rearwardly of the manifold |2I which is supported upon the nipple 9| of the gasdelivering valve or extension, as the case may be. The annular frame |24 projects over the drip pan |29 and any particles of food or liquid spilled on the grid |25 will be caught in the drip pan. The drip pan and the entire burner may be lifted from its support on the nipple 9| and brackets |20 and removed through the openings in the stove top without disturbing any stove parts or other burners. This may quickly be cleaned or thoroughly washed as a utensil and replaced on the stove by iirst inserting the nozzle through the opening onto the support |23 which directs the end of the mixing chamber |2I in position to engage and be supported by the nipple 9|, after which the rear end is lowered onto the bracket |20 to be supported thereby.
What is claimed is:
In a stove construction, a cab-inet comprising a pair of front stampings secured together adjacent to the center line of the cabinet and provided with compartment openings, a base platform to which said front stampngs are secured, rear corner pillars secured to said base platform, a rear panel joined to said pillars, side panels joined to lsaid pillars and to said front stampings, closure elements for said compartment openings extending laterally over the front edge of said side panels, and a top panel having a splash back supported on said cabinet and extending over said side panels and said closure elements, said top panel also having as a unit side and front flanges of equal depth extending downwardly to said closure elements.
