The purpose of my present invention has been to provide a simple and novel attachment assembly for cigarette and cigar lighters of any common type at present in use whereby there is obtained a combination lighter, cigarette holder and ash tray unit capable of being assembled in unit relation so that the attachment parts may be placed in the pocket with the lighter, and removed at will for use under actual conditions of service.

It is well known that very frequently a larger or smaller number of people in groups, as when in class rooms, hotel lobbies, private homes, and elsewhere, start smoking cigarettes or cigars, and frequently there is not a supply of ash trays or holders, also holders for lighted cigarettes, to supply each individual in the group.

My present invention deals with the above situation in that I have designed an attachment assembly comprising a lighted cigarette support and a separate ash holder or tray member adapted to be united with an ordinary complete unitary cigar lighter adapted to be carried in the pocket as previously mentioned. By having the cigarette holder and the ash tray directly connectable to the lighter, the cigarette or cigar smoker is able to have a place for resting his lighted cigarette or cigar at his chair or any nearby place and also is provided with a holding receptacle for the ashes and cigarette or cigar butts when smoked.

A special object of my invention is to provide a combination lighter, cigarette holder and asl-- holder of the type referred to which may be cheaply manufactured, suitably ornamented in appearance to go with the lighter according to the particular finish of the latter, and which may be combined with the lighter very readily or disassembled therefrom ;for use in a similar manner.

In carrying out my invention 1 contemplate employing a lighter with an associated cigarette holder and ash holder assembly with these parts all adapted to be assembled in nested relation when not in use and carried in the pocket.

A full understanding of my invention will be had upon reference to the following detailed description and to the accompanying drawings, in which:

Figure l is a view in elevation illustrating a combination cigarette lighter, cigar holder and ash tray or receptacle made in accordance with a preferred embodiment of my invention.

Figure 2 is a view showing the parts illustrated in Figure 1 as when they have been separated.

Figure 3 is a view in end elevation of the ash holder or receptacle and cigarette or cigar holder as when separated in a manner similar to that in which these parts are shown separated in Fig ure 2.

Figure 4 is a view in elevation looking toward one end of the ash receptacle and the cigarette holder showing how the cigarette holder may be applied to the receptacle as a cover means.

Figure 5 is a perspective View of the ash tray or holder alone.

Figure 6 is a perspective View of the cigarette or cigar holder as when it is being used with a cigarette in place thereon.

Referring now to my drawings and particularly Figures 1 and 2, it will be observed that the lighter I illustrated is a conventional form of lighter having the openable cover commonly used for such articles. Over the base portion of the lighter body I provide the attachment assembly that has been previously referred to as comprising an ash receptacle 2 and a cigarette or cigar holder 3. The ash receptacle 2 is somewhat deep in formation so that it will hold a sufficiency of ashes and also cigarette or cigar butts. It fits snugly in nested relation over the body portion of the lighter at the lower portion of the latter and is held from displacement by the friction between the parts. In a somewhat analogous manner the cigarette holder is of somewhat receptacle form in that it is large enough and shaped in a manner corresponding with the rectangular form of the receptacle 2, so as to fit over the lower portion of the latter when the parts are assembled as in the general relation of Figure 1. The bottom of the cigarette holder 3 is closed as shown at t and is formed with a plurality of transverse recessed, grooved or depressed portions designated as 5.

As shown in Figures 5 and 6, the cigarette holder 3 may be displaced from the ash holder or tray 2 and may be set on a chair, table or any convenient placeof support upon inversion thereof so that the cigarette supporting recesses or grooves 5 are uppermost. Under such conditions the cigarette holder as shown in the construction of my drawings can support three'cigars or three cigarettes. However the grooves 5 may be provided at closer intervals so as to support a larger number of cigarettes should this be desirable. Such is hardly necessary however because the attachment assembly and lighter unit of my invention is designed to be a personal one and generally speaking it will suffice if the cigarette holder 3 is provided with one or two of the recesses or grooved parts 5.

Upon removal of the ash holder 2 from my lighter it provides a separate receptacle or box in which ashes may be flicked from a cigarette or cigar thereinto. The ash holder 2 is open at its upper end and has a closed bottom as apparent upon reference to Figure 1 and Figures 3 and 4 of the drawings.

The attachment parts 2 and 3 of my invention may be very simply formed and they may be finished in any desired manner to conform with the finish of the lighter I. If the lighter I is decorated by an engraving or an insignia the parts 2 and 3 may be similarly decorated.

My lighter, ash holder and cigarette holder combination unit may be carried in the pocket in the manner of its assembly shown in Figure 1. When desired to be used in the manner which has been generally described above the parts may be separated as indicated in Figure 2 and used under practical conditions of service as indicated by Figures 5 and 6 of my drawings.

When the user of my unit as above described is through smoking and wishes to dispose of the contents of the ash holder or receptacle 2 he may for the time being, mount upon the open end of the ash holder the cigarette holder 3 employing the latter, as shown in Figure 1, as a cover for the ash holder or receptacle. When the contents of the receptacle 2 have been disposed of the parts 2 and 3 may be cleaned, replaced upon the lighter I and carried in the pocket for further use.

It is contemplated of course that the parts 2 and 3 shall be made of very thin metal so they will be very light and will hardly noticeably add to the weight of the lighter I on which they are assembled. They may be stamped and drawn from light sheet metal in an obv1ous manner and may be very cheaply made though they would be ordinarily highly finished to match the finish of the lighter I.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is

1. In combination, a complete unitary cigarette lighter, and an attachment therefor comprising an ash receptacle adapted to fit upwardly over a portion of the lighter and removable therefrom as a separate unit and a cigarette holder adapted to fit upwardly over said ash receptacle and removable therefrom as a unit.

2. A combination unit as claimed in claim '1, in which the ash receptacle is closed at its bottom, and open at the top to receive the lighter, and the cigarette holder is closed at its bottom, and open at the top to receive the ash receptacle.

3. A combination unit as claimed in claim 1, in which the ash receptacle is closed at its bottom, and open at the top to fit over the body of the lighter, and the cigarette holder is closed at its bottom and open at the top to fit over the body of the ash receptacle, the cigarette holder having cigarette holding recesses formed at its closed bottom portion so that when inverted it will support a cigarette from rolling off the same.

4. A combination unit as claimed in claim 1, in which the attachment parts are frictionally telescopically nested together.
