METHOD OF FORMlNG BUTTON-HOLES.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No.264,521, dated September 19, 1882,

' To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, L00 CHEW FAN, of the city and county of San Francisco, State of California, have invented a Method of Formin g Button-Holes; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description thereof.

My invention relates to an improved method of forming button-holes in buttoned shoes and for similar purposes; and it consists in an improved continuous finish extending along the inner ends throughout the entire line of button-holes upon the inside, as will be more fully explained by reference to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a view of my improvement. Fig. 2 represents the employment of two or more cords to form the finish.

In the ordinary method of making buttonholes for this class of work the button-holes are worked by machinery, but the inner ends are finished separately and byhand, thus using a considerable amount of silk and at the same time making protuberant lumps or knots and an unsightly finish.

In my invention I employ a continuous cord,

which is laid across the inner ends of the button-holes are made, and B are button-holes. These are stitched or worked around the edges in the usual manner, the ends 0 of the gimp, which is laid along the edge when it is worked, being left loose at the inner end of the button-hole. t

After all the button-holes have been worked a cord, D, is laid along the inner ends, as shown, and the ends of the gimp are simply twisted together and laid along with the line of the cord by the machine, by which the whole is stitched to the leather. The loose ends of gimp not stitched in may be afterward cut off,

leaving a smooth, even finish for all the inner ends of the button-holes and no projections or lumps.

This method is also much more economical, as there is a saving of the silk usually emp'loyed'to finish the ends of the button-holes.

If desired, two or more cords may be used, and the stitching may be done in plain or ornamental colored silk or thread, so thataneat and durable exterior and interior finish is formed.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-- The combination, with a row of button-holes, of a cord extending along and adjoining the inner ends of all the holes, and having the gimp or binding-thread of each button-hole twisted with said cord and secured thereto, whereby such cord forms the finish of the inner ends of all the button-holes.
