Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
OSCAR M. DRAPER, OF NORTH ATTLEBOROUGH, MASSACHUSETTS.
LOCKET.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 264,447, dated September 19, 1882.
Application filed July 13,1882. (NomodeL) To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, OSCAR M. DRAPER, of North Attleborough, in the county of Bristol and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and usefullmprovementin Lockets; and I do hereby declare that the following specification, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, forming a part of the same, is a full, clear, and exact description thereof.
My improvement consists in a locket composed of two halves or parts pivoted together at one end, so as to swing by each other in either direction and in parallel planes, and provided with a fastening-device for locking the parts in a closed position, which device is located on that part of thelocket'farthestfrom the pivotal point, whereby when the halves are moved by each other the parts of the locking device will not catch upon or abrade any portion of thelocket or obstruct the swinging of the said halves in either direction.
Referring to the drawings, Figure l represents my improved locket, having the general outline of a shield, although any other design may be employed. Fig. 2 shows the sainewith the parts partially separated, so as to expose to viewapicture contained in one of said parts. Fig. 3 represents a side view of the locket, partially in section.
A A are the two halves of the locket, which are provided with integral ring portions a a, through which the tubular pivot B passes to connect the two halves to each other and furnish a convenient means for attaching the locket to a chain. Each of the parts A A is preferably adapted in a well-known manner to receive a picture, although only one of them may be so constructed.
The device for locking the halves ofthe locket in a closed position is located on the point of the shield, which portion is the farthest from the pivotal point. This device consists of a cup or socket, 0, attached to the part A, and a'ball or pin, 0, having an oval face, secured to the part A, as particularly shown in Fig. 3. When the halves of the locket are closed the cup or socket c springs over the ball or pin 0, and the parts are locked in a closed position. When the halves are moved apart neither the socket nor the ball will angage any portion of the locket to abrade the same or obstruct the movement of the parts in either direction.
What I claim as my invention,'and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The improved locket herein described, consisting of two halves pivoted together so as to swing by each other in parallel planes, and provided witha ball-and-socket locking device located on that portion of the locket which is farthest from the pivotal point, substantially as and for the purposes specified. OS OAR M. DRAPER.
