In the past, little attention waspaid to the d csign and appearance of hopper covers for paseV senger cars because they were located in rooms designed solelyfor their use. 'I'he present trend in sleeping car design is to provide separate rooms for .passengers in which is located the lavatory equipment including a hopper having a cover 1 that serves as an eXtra seat. It has thus become necessary to design hopper seat covers that are comfortable to sit on, having an appearancem seat covers andxmorekeeping with the furniture in the passenger room and capable of substantially shrouding the hopper. Y

AnV object of the invention is to provide ra'tollet seat cover that will be acceptacle in a furnished room and provide a comfortable seat.

Another object of the invention resides in the construction of a hopper cover andseat in which the elements may be readily associated'to form a sanitary, rugged structure of pleasing appearance.

These and other objects of the invention Will be apparent to those skilled in the art from a study of the following description and accompanying drawings, in which:

In the illustrated embodiment of the invention, the supporting structure consists of a at base IU and skirt II depending from the front and sides of the base. The base and skirt may be formed in various ways and of different materials but, as illustrated, they are formed separately of 4 wood and are secured together by nails I2. A tacking strip I3 is secured on top of the rear edge portion of the base by nails I4. Hinge anchor plates I5 are secured to the bottom face of the rear edge portion of the base by r1vets I6.

Cushion I1 is assembled on the base and 1s substantially the same in outline as the base. In order to accommodate the tacking strip, the cushion is recessed along the rear edge as indicated by numeral I8. Thus, the only exposed portions of the hopper cover are the upholstery outer finishing cover and the plastic covering.

Hinge members 23 are secured against the plastic covering by screws 24 engaging the anchor plates I5, such screws passing through openings in the covering. Bumpers 25 are secured against the underside of the covering by nails 26 and are arranged to rest on the front of the hopper seat (not shown) when the hopper cover is swung down, The nails 26 pass through openings in the covering and the bumpers and members 23 secure the covering 22 in position tightly against.
