4.fixture on joists, beams, `frame-work or other parts of abuilding structure, whereby wall board and/orother surfacing material may be applied` in a workmanlike manner. lThe primary object of this invention is to provide improved hanger means which is simpleY and inexpensive and by which the fixture can be easily mounted on a vertical; horizontal or inclined wall or other structure. Another object is to provide improved hanger means upon which the fixture can be easily locked in adjusted position without the use of screws, nuts or bolts and which can be readily applied to a xture. Another object is to eliminate the need of framing for the fixture and to provide means'by which the xture maybe or any usual type, whether removable from a wallstructure or held permanently therein. Among still further objects is to provide impro-ved hanger means which is applicable'to' various vtypes of receptacles, whether" new or' old and whether recessed or Vmounted on any convenient support.
To these ends my invention comprises the features of construction and combination of parts hereinafter described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings forming part of this specification, Fig. 1 is a side elevation of a recessed lighting xture which is shown installed in a ceiling or other wall structure, a portion of the fixture housing and wall structure being broken away and in section and my improved hanger means applied thereto; Fig. 2 is a bottom plan showing the body portion of a lighting fixture fastened to the framework of a wall structure by my improved fastening means prior to the application of button board, wall board and/or other plaster or surface finish,v
the light bulb and reiiector shown in Fig. 1 being removed; Fig. 3 is a plan of one of my improved hanger bars; Fig. 4 is a side .or edge eleva-tional view of the hanger bar shown in Fig. 3; Fig. 5 is a plan of a detail illustrating the means by which each of the hanger bars is locked in selected longitudinal position on the supporting frame of the fixture, and Fig. 6 is a section taken on the line 6 6 of Fig. 5, when the hanger bar is locked.
In the drawings, A represents the housing of an electric lighting fixture, it being understood that my improvement is applicable to any type of fixture. One other type of fixture and its housing is disclosed in my comp-anion application, Serial No. 38,234, led July 12, 1948. The iiXture Ato the wall nish vIt as shown in Fig. l.

The box like'h'o-using A is held b y its open end in a closely iitting rectangular supporting lframe C, said frame assuming a position in the opening lzwhich is provided in the wall structure. Screws I3, vapplied from inside of the housingand its supporting frame C, serve to hold the housing with the edgeV of its downward open end lflush with the outer edge of said frame and reven with the outer surface ofthe wall nnish.
The supporting frame or band Cis formed with or secured by welding or other suitable means on the horizontal flange support or plate D, which is adapted to assume a position above or adjacent The plateD asV shown is' rectangular in shape surrounding the fixture housing A and is provided with oppositely disposed pairs of loops le and l5 in proximity to the members of each opposite pair of sides of the supporting frame C and the accompanying sides of the housing A. These loops as shown are on the lower side of plate D but they may with substantially equal effectiveness be disposed on the upper side. They are oblong in cross sectional shape and of suitable size to receive and engage an oppositely disposed pair of fiat hanger bars or straps E. These hanger bars extend laterally from the housing and are slidable through the loops on the lower side of the supporting plate. The opposite end portions of the hanger bars are adapted to be secured to the lower edges of joists I6 or other members of a building structure in selected longitudinal position by nails l1 or other suitable fastening means which engage through any one of the series of holes I8 in each of the opposite end portions of each bar E. 'I he supporting loops are arranged on opposite sides of the supporting frame C sov that a pair of the bars may be applied longitudinally in either selected transverse direction which is most appropriate for positioning the housing and attaching the supporting plate D to members of the wall structure.
In use the bars E are slipped through the loops on each side of a selected pair of sides of the housing supporting frame C and are locked in longitudinally adjusted position either before or after vthe respective end portions of the bars are secured to a pair of joists or other members of a structure. The bars thus serve to support the 3 fixture in the wall structure through the Wall surfacing I which usually is composed of button board and wall board sections or any other type of wall finish.
Locking means is provided for fastening the xture housing supporting frame C and the supporting bars or straps together in relatively selected longitudinal position. Said locking means consists of a series of teeth or notches ZB in the median portion of one tside edge of one or both members of the pair of vsupporting bars E, and a cooperating tongue or clip 2| which is formed in the plate member D, as shown in Figs. and 6. In use when the fixture housing is positioned longitudinally between the end portions of a pair of bars E, the tongue or clip 2| is bent into engagement with the corresponding members of the teeth or notches, whereby the housing is held and locked on the bars either before orgafter the latter have been secured to the joists or other supporting members of the wall structure. In
.this .manner no framing isnenessaly for holding the xture during or after the application of the wall finish surfacing I0.
It is noted lthat the broken line position of the joists 16' and hanger bars indicated in Fig. 2, illustrates the application of said bars 'E' in cooperation with the transverse pairs of loops I4 and I5', on adjacent sides of the supporting frame C, so that the fixture may be placed in either of two transverse directions as desired.
It is further noted that the iixture A as shown in Fig. .1 is provided with a suitable cover 22, but it is to be understood Vthat this feature is not part of the novelty of the present improvement and that the iixture maybe of any .type'to which my improvementis applicable.
For the purpose of fdening my improvement the supporting frame C may be considered as an integral part of the xture housing or a flanged portion thereof., or it may be of any suitable construction for performing itsfunotion. Also the type of `Xture to which my improved supporting 4 bars or straps are applied may be of any kind and shape whether used for illuminating or any other purpose within the spirit of the invention.
Modifications are contemplated within the spirit of the invention and the scope of the following claims.
I claim:
1. In a service fixture for installation 1n an opening in a building structure, a housing supporting marginal collar lining said opening having a lateral supporting flange, a pair of hanger bars secured by their end portions to said building structure, each of said bars having a notched edge between its ends and said flange having loops on its inner surface through which said bars are movably lengaged longitudinally, and fastening means on said ange engaging said notched edge for lockingsaid collar in longitudinally selected position. 1
2. In a fixture for installation in an opening in a building structure, a housing supporting marginal collar lining said opening and having a lateral supporting flange, a pair of hanger ,bars secured 'by their end portions to said building structure, each of said bars having a longitudinal toothed edge between its ends and said flange having cooperating engaging means selectively secured longitudinally to said toothed edge for regulating the position assumed by said fixture in said opening.
