TOOL-CLAMP.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 264,017, dated September 5, 1882.
Application filed December 19, 1881.
T 0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM S. WINTER- BOTTOM, a citizen of the United States, residin g at Newark, in the county of Essex, State of New Jersey, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Tool-Clamps, which improvement is fully set forth in the following specification and accompanying drawings, inwhich- Figures 1 and 2 are views of opposite faces of portions of the tool-clamp embodying my invention. Fig. 3 is an edge View thereof, the parts being separated. Fig. 4 is a section of the complete clamp in line w 00, Fig. 1.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the several figures.
My invention consists of a tool clam p adapted for securely connecting the tool to the handle and setting it at various angles thereto, as will be hereinafter fully set forth.
Referring to the drawings, A represents a blade or tool, and B the handle thereof.
0 represents a tang or stem, which is formed with or secured to the heel end of the tool and passed through an opening in the handle, and suitably threaded for the engagement of the fastening-nut a, which tightens against the handle.
D represents a plate which is channeled in its back, as at b, to conform to the shape of the handle, and radially grooved or notched on its face, as at c, said plate being formed of two parts, I) a, each having a central opening for the passage of the tang 0, it being noticed that the part b is in contact with the handle and the part c with the tool.
The handle B may have two or more openings for the reception of the tang or stem, so 7 that the tool may be set near one end of the (No model.)
provided relatively to the nature and requirements of the tool.
The part b of the plate D is formed with the channeled back I), and provided with peripheral notches c. The other part, c", has lugs b, which project from its inner face near the periphery, and radial notches c, which are on the outer face of said part, the end edge of the tool entering said notches and the lugs 11 engaging with the notches c. When the fastening-nnt a is loosened the two parts of the plate separate, and the part with the radial notches may be rotated, so that said notches are presented at an angle required for the tool. Then v the edge of the tool is inserted in the notches, the lugs b are fitted in the relative peripheral notches c, and the nut is tightened, so that the tool and handle are again firmly connected and held in their adjusted positions.
Instead of the channeled back I), I may employ studs which project from the plate and pierce the handle in order to prevent rotation of the plate.
