E 4 EDWARD BLACKMAN ATTOR Patented May 26, 1953 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE The invention relates to hangers for trousers and skirts and more particularly to a hanger specially provided to maintain an even pressure on the cuifs of trousers, or the waist of a skirt, to

prevent undue creases from the pressure and promote the smoothing out of undesirable Wrinkles formed in usage.

One of the objects of this invention is the provision of a trousers hanger into which the cuffs of the trousers may beclipped in place evenly' and automatically by the exertion of an upward pressure without thev necessity of using one hand or a portion of the body for applying or releasing hanger tension as has heretofore been necessary with this type of device.

Another object of this invention is to provide a trousers holder which exerts an even tension over the trousers or skirt thus preventing wrinkles from forming from uneven pressure.

Another object of this invention is the provision of a wide frictional surface for holding the trousers or skirt so that a considerable pressure, if needed, may be exerted at the opposite or waist end of the trousers to facilitate the removal of undesirable wrinkles.

Other objects and advantages will be apparent from the specification and drawings in which:

Referring to the drawings, I is a clothes bar, such as is common in most closets. The main back board 2 of the hanger is preferably composed of wood, although any suitable material may be used such as plastic or metal. The back board 2 has affixed to its top, by any suitable means, hooks 3 and 3a bent to engage the bar I for suspension of the back board 2 therefrom. Attached to the back board 2 at 4 and in by means of screws are spring pieces 5 and 6 whose rearward ends are turned sharply upward to form spring release abutments l and 8 and whose forward portions are gradually turned upward at 9 and Ill,then sharply downwardas at l l and I2 and spread out to form spade shaped clamps l3 and Hi having bottom edges rolled as at I5 and I6. These rolled bottom edges are for the purpose of offering little resistance to the insertion of the cuffs ll of trousers l8 into the clips l3 and 2 Claims. (Cl. 22396) M. The parts 9 and Ill for-m stops which prevent the over insertion of the bottoms of trousers when inserted into the device.

At one side of the back piece 2 is attached a front board ll) by means of hinges 2b and 2|. The front piece is inset slightly toward the top as at 22 to conform with the thickness of the cloth of the trouser cuff l! and on the inset has carved out depressions 23 and 2 3 corresponding in depth and size to the clips I3 and id and spaced so that when the front board is closed on the backboard by swinging on the hinges 2i) and 2i the clips l3 and 14 fit closely into the depressions 23 and 24. The inset portion of the front board I9 is cut out as at 25 for the purpose of providing a, non-pressure area at that portion of the cuif ll corresponding to the back or heel portion of the cuff it being undesirable to maintain pressure on this portion, although in some cases it may be preferable to omit this out out 25 if pressure is desired along the entire cuff and make the front board complementary in size to the back board 2.

At the end of the front board It is a spring latch 26 affixed to the front board by screws 2'! and 21a or by other suitable means. The latch has a catch opening 28 adapted to lock into a stud 29 for the purpose of keeping the boards 2 and l9 in closed position when the opening 28 engages the stud 29.

At the top of the front board I9 are suitably affixed at and 3| two forwardly and upwardly thrust spring release arms 32 and 33 for the purpose of making contact with the spring release abutments and 8 respectively. The arm 33 is slightly shorter than the arm 32 so that in closing the front board IS on the back board 2 pressure will be applied by 32 and 33 on 1 and 8 respectively at approximately the same time thus preventing a premature release of pressure on the trouser cuff at the grip I3.

In operation the pants are folded in alignment then the cufis are slid under the spade like clamps i3 and It. Their spring pressure being enough to hold the trousers in position, the front board I9 is now swung closed on the back board 2 by means of the hinges 20 and 2! and at the last closing movement the abutments of the arms 32 and 33 strike the abutments l and 8 of the back board causing the spade-like clamps to release some of their pressure and form a continuous flat surface of approximately even pressure with the front board, so that the pants are held tightly by a smooth surface both at the front and rear except for the heel portion of the cuff which is allowed freedom by reason of the indentation 25.

While in this position a slight weight could be applied to the waist of the trousers in order to help smooth out any Wrinkles between the hanger and the waist. It has been found that due to the resiliency of the wooden back board and due to the slight release of pressure necessary, that the projections 32 and 33 will rock slightly on the ends I and 8 backwards pushing out the clamps I3 and It, thus releasing the clamping pressure, These parts will also return'to nermal on release of contact between the ends' l,:8,'-and 32, 33. This is especially true if the screws are not turned down completely tight on the back-k;
