On the back of the body 23 of each gripping plate a lug 34 is provided, through which the lower end of a helical spring 35 extends, the upper end of which engages the eye of the cotter pin I6 as shown in Figure 2, so that the gripping plates are normally urged to slide upwardly and outwardly on the pins 21.

When a bag (not shown) is put on the filling spout, the pointed lower end of the spout enters the mouth of the bag quickly and easily. The hand lever is pivoted downwardly, whereby the gripping plates are urged into position to engage the bag and to clamp it against the spout. When the bag is being filled, so that its weight increases and it starts to slip downwardly on the spout, the gripping plates are pulled downwardly too by means of the friction between the bag and the rough friction surface of the pad or lining 24. This downward movement of the gripping plates entails also an inward movement of said plates, strengthening the gripping action of the plates and preventing slippage of the filled bag.

A short upward pivotal movement of the hand lever frees the hangers H and permits the removal of the filled bags. The grips prevent the hand lever from pivoting too far upwardly, so that said lever is always in position to be pivoted downwardly into working position. Simultaneously the gripping plates slide upwardly and outwardly under the action of the helical springs 35.

To facilitate the storing of the above described bag support, a comparatively small plate 36 is welded under the straight rear portion of each bracket B and is provided with a hole 3?, so that the bag support can be hung on a hook (not shown) or the like. n

I claim:

1. In a bag holder for filling spouts, a pair of hangers pivotally supported at opposite sides of the spout, a bag gripping member supported from each of said hangers, said gripping members being transversely curved to conform to the curvature of the spout, a friction lining on the inner curved face of each gripping member, a pin and slot connection between each hanger and each gripping member, each slot being directed inwardly and downwardly toward the outlet end of the spout to cam the gripping members inwardly to tighten the grip of the same on the bag as the weight of the contents discharged into the bag from the spout increases, and means commonly cooperative with said hangers to force said gripping members into bag holding positions and to release the latter when the bag is ready to be removed from the spout.

The invention as defined in claim 1, with a pair of angled brackets horizontallydisposed and having their inner legs secured in spaced relation to the rear side of the spout and their outer legs extending tangentially forward at opposite sides thereof and terminating at diametrically opposite points with respect thereto, and flanges out-turned from the forward ends of the said outer legs and having the upper ends of said hangers pivoted to' the same.

The invention as is defined in claim 1, with the said pins secured in said hangers and the said slots each formed in a vertical substantially triangular rib formed centrally on the outer sides of said gripping members, said slots extending parallel with the outer longer sides of said ribs, and a coiled spring having one end connected to each of said pins and its other end to each of said gripping members to snap the latter free from contact with the bag for the removal of the latter when filled from the spout upon the actua tion of said means to release the gripping members.

4. In a bag holder for filling spouts, a pair of brackets secured at opposite sides of and projecting radially of the spout, a pair of elongate sub stantially U-shaped hangers each including two spaced side members, each hanger having a bracket disposed between and pivoted to the side members thereof and at one end thereof, a pair of bag gripping members at opposite sides of the spout and each including a rib extending longi tudinally of the spout and projecting radially of the spout between the spaced side members of an adjacent hanger, each rib having a slot therein extending obliquely to the length of the rib, a pin extending between the side members of each hanger and through the slot in the adjacent rib, said slots being in downwardly converging relation toward the outlet end of the interposed spout, and means carried by the spout and operatively coupled with the hangers for effecting outward swinging of the hangers on their pivots and movement of the pins in said slots to effect the outward movement of the gripping members away from the spout.

5. In a bag holder for filling spouts, a pair of brackets secured at opposite sides of and projecting radially of the spout, a pair of elongate substantially U-shaped hangers each including two spaced side members, each hanger having a bracket disposed between and pivoted to the side members thereof and at one end thereof, a pair of bag gripping members at opposite sides of the spout and each including a rib extending longitudinally of the spout and projecting radially of the spout between the spaced side members of an adjacent hanger, each rib having a slot therein extending obliquely to the length of the rib, a pin extending between the side members of each hanger and through the slot in the adjacent rib, said slots extending in divergent relation away from the outlet end of the spout, each of said hangers having an outwardly bowed portion between the pivoted end and said pin, the upper end of the bowed portion merging with an outwardly extending grip, and a bail shaped lever pivoted to the spout and enclosing the hangers across said bowed portions for forcing the hangers and gripping members toward the spout when the lever is swung in one direction for engaging the grips and swinging the hangers and gripping members away from the spout when swung in the opposite direction.
