This invention relates to an applicator whereby hair oil, hair tonic, or other preparations may be applied to the scalp, said applicator being so formed as to comprise at the same time a scalp massaging device. The invention further relates to a container specifically designed to receive the combined applicator and scalp massaging device.

Most usually, hair oil, hair tonic, or other liquid preparations for the scalp are sold in a container from which the contents are dispensed directly, said contents being dispensed either by shaking the container over the head so as to force the liquid through a restricted orifice in the neck of the container, or by shaking or pouring some of the contents onto the palm of the This is Further, in the use of conventional containers,

The main object of the present invention is to provide a container for ahairoil or other scalp preparation, and a combined applicator and scalp massaging device to be associated with said container, wherein the inconveniences and annoyances described above cannot occur. To this end, I provide a container having a threaded opening at its upper end adapted to receive a threaded portion of a combined applicator and scalp massaging device, so that said applicator and massaging device can normally extend into the container contents, while still tightly closing 'bined applicator and scalp massaging device which will not only serve as a container cap, but also will permit the container contents to be applied readily to the scalp, and thereafter dispersed evenly throughout the scalp area, without possibility of soiling the hands.

Another important object is to provide a device of the type stated which can be manufactured at relatively low cost, and will be attractive in appearance and eflicient in use.

Still another important object is to provide a combined applicator and scalp massaging device which is so formed, as to permit its being retained permanently by the user, for application to successively purchased hair preparation containers.

from the annexed drawing, in which like reference characters designate like parts throughout the several views, and wherein:

Figure 1 is a top plan view of a combined applicator and scalp massaging device andits associated container;

Figure 2 is a side elevational view;

Figure 3 is a sectional view taken substantially on line 3-3 of Figure 1; and

Figure 4 is a bottom plan view of the applicator and scalp massaging device as it appears when disassociated from its container.

Referring to the drawings in detail, a container I0 is in the present instance of cylindrical formation, although it can be of any desired ornamental configuration.

The container [0 is preferably of a transparent material, such as glass, plastic, or the like.

' The container I0 is adapted to contain a suitable hair preparation, not shown, and is integrally formed at its upper end with an end wall I2 provided with a center opening [4.

Formed in the end wall 12, and bounding the center opening thereof, is an annular recess or well l6 of U-shaped cross sectional configuration.

The annular well I6 is provided with an upstanding inner wall, constituting the edge of the center opening l4, and formed in the outer surface of said inner wall are threads I8.

A combined applicator and scalp massaging device includes a handle 20 of any desired shape, which is integrally or otherwise rigidly formed with a body 22. The body 22 is adapted to be extended into the opening l4, and is integrally or otherwise rigidly formed with an outstanding, annular flange 24 of inverted L-shaped formation. The flange 24 extends over the upstanding inner wall of the well [6, and extends into said well, said flange including a depending annular lip 25 the inner surface of which is provided with threads 26 complementary to the threads [8 of the container.

As may be noted from Figure 3, the container well is of such a width as to define anopen annular space 28 surrounding the flange 24, so

as to form a recess adapted to receive drippings from the combined applicator and scalp massaging device, after said device has been used upon the scalp and is returned to the position thereof illustrated in Figure 3. In this connection, as may be noted from Figure 3, the width of the depending annular lip 25. of the flange Z4. is such as to, cause the bottom. edge of said annular lip to be spaced above the bottom of a Well. into the drippings falling therefrom, and will be capable of drying to a substantial extent before the next use of the device.

Formed upon the body 22, and extending, downwardly into the container I0, is a series of depending fingers 32, said fingers preferably be ing of conical, elongated formation and being desirably formed of some material such as soft rubber... Breferably, the rubber material used in forming the fingers. 32 is not. so oft as. to. impart to the fingers. a high, degree, of flexibility, since in this event the fingers would not discharge with full efficiency their function of massaging the scalp after application of the hair preparation to the scalp. Rather the fingers are. of a. medium softness, so as to flex to a certain. extent when applied to the. scalp, while still exerting pressure against th skin of the scalp during the, massaging thereof.

In use of the applicator and scalp massaging device, the handle '20. is gripped, and rotated for. the purpose of threading the applicator out of engagement, with the. container ill... Asia re.- sult, the applicator, when. removed from the, container, will have itsfingers 32. saturated with the hair preparation, since said. fingers extend directly into the contents of the container between uses of the applicator.

The applicator isv then positioned. against th scalp, and may be shaken lightly ifdesired, so as to shake the hair preparation loose; from the fingers 32 and on to the-scalp. It. will be-understood. that when the applicator is removed from the container-,the hair preparation will adhere to the fingers32, by capillary attraction.

In any event, after the preparation. has been applied to the scalp in. the manner referred to above, the applicator can be pressed against the scalp, and rubbed throughout the scalp area against the skin of the scalp, thus to apply massaging action to the scalp, while. at. the same time dispersing the hair preparation uniformly throughout the scalp area.

Should the level of the contents within the container lfl' fall below the lower orfree end of the fingers 32:, the container can be shaken immediately before use of the applicator; after whichthe applicator would be removed from the container in the regular manner discussed above.

It will be apparent that between. uses of the device, the applicator constitutes a closure or cap for the container, whereby the container is effectively sealed, so. as to hold the contents against leakage from the container, and so as also to keep the contents clean. and'fresh.

It will be apparent that in the use of a combined applicator and scalp massagingdevice, and container therefor, formed as illustrated and described herein, there is no possibility of the hands becoming saturated with the hair preparation or becoming oily. I believe it will be obvious that the applicator and scalp massaging device can, if desired, be constructed in such a manner as to be retained as a permanent accessory. Thereafter, a container in having a conventional threaded cap, not shown,. can be purchased, and said conventional cap removed and the applicator constituting the present invention substituted therefor. successively purchased containers can have the applicator applied thereto in the same manner.

Of course, the container and its associated applicator can be sold as a unit, to be disposed of together after the container has been ex hausted of its contents.

It is believed clear that the invention is not necessarily confined to the specific use or uses thereof described above, since it maybe utilized for any purpose to which it may be suited. Nor is the invention to be necessarily limited. to the specific construction illustrated and described since such construction is only intended to be illustrative of the principles of operation and the means presently devised to carry out said principles, it being considered that the inventionv comprehends any; minor changes in construction that maybe permitted within the scope of, the-appended claims.

What is. claimed is:

1. A device of the class described comprisin a container adapted to hold a fluid preparation and having an, upper end wall formed with an opening and with a well surrounding said opening, said well being of U-shaped cross sectional configuration and: having an inner wall bounding the. opening and having threads on that surface thereof facing awa from said opening; and a combined applicator and massage member removablyattachedv to said container a a closure cap therefor and including an upstanding handle adapted to be disposed exteriorly of the container and projectingupwardly from said opening, a body rigid with the lower end of the handle and extendable into said opening; a flange rigid with and extending outwardly from the body and threaded for engagement with the threads of said inner wall, said flange being of inverted L-shaped formation and including a portion overlying and binding against the edge of the inner wall of the well on threading of the flange onto said inner-wall, the flange extending into the well for deposit therein of drippings from said handle and body, and fingers on the body extending into the container for immersion in the contents thereof and adapted for application of said content to. a scalp and for massage of the scalpduringsaid application.

2. A device of the class described comprising a container adapted to hold a fluid preparation and having anupper end wall formed with a dispensing opening and with a Well surrounding said. opening, said well being of U-shaped cross sectional configuration and having an upstanding, annular inner wall formed with threads onthe surface thereof facing away from said opening; and a combined applicator and massage member removably attached to said container as a closure cap therefor and including an upstanding handle adapted to be disposed exteriorly of the container and projecting upwardly from said opening, a body rigid with the lower end of the handl and extendable into said opening, an annular flange rigid with and extending outwardly from the body, said flange being of inverted L-shaped formation and being formed along its periphery with a depending annular lip the inner surface of which is threaded for engagement with the threads of the inner wall of the Well, said flange bearing against the upper edge of said inner wall of the well on threading of the lip onto said inner Wall, said lip extending into the Well for deposit therein of drippings from said handle and body and having its bottom edge terminating in spaced relation to the bottom of the Well, and fingers on the body extending into the container REFERENCES CITED The following references are of record in the file of this patent:
