The present invention relates to a glove construction and especially to a novel glove composed of fabric and leather with the leather covering so designed and applied to the exterior of the fabric as to assure maximum protection thereto and greatly enhance the wearing quality of the glove.

Among the objects of the present invention is the provision of a novel combination fabric and leather glove construction in which the reinforcing and Wear-resisting leather is applied to the exposed surfaces of an inner glove formed, knit or woven of any suitable fabric or material, whereby to effectively protect any surfaces of the glove subject to Wear.

A further object of the present invention is the provision of a novel combination fabric and leather glove in which the leather covers and reinforces the fabric over the palm, rear of the hand and the top and bottom of the fingers but with the side of the glove adjacent the little finger and the opposite sides of the fingers other than the index finger and the thumb, being devoid of or unprotected by the leather covering or reinforcing material whereby to assure exibility and ease of manipulation of the glove. In the preferred embodiment, a portion of the fabric along one side of the index linger and over the top of the thumb remains uncovered as these parts are subjected to the least wear.

The present invention further comprehends the provision of a novel gloveconstruction in which the ends or tips of the lingers where substantial wear occurs are reinforced by a leather or protective covering that overlaps these tips and provides for maximum protection at the ends of the fingers.

Another important object of the present invention is the provision of a novel combination fabric and leather glove in which the leather completely encompasses the fabric adjacent the wrist whereby to prevent the glove from thereat stretching and losing its shape. This confining band of leather is so arranged that the wearer is assured of a glove that will retain its shape and conforming fit about the wrist during the life of the glove.

A still further object is the provision of a novel combination fabric and leather glove that has all the inherent advantages of a glove having a complete outer covering of leather, but in addition has the important advantages of ease of application and removal, flexibility, economy in material and labor and the assurance of reinforcement and protection at all points vulnerable to wear. Furthermore, by making the exposed portions of the fabric glove of a contrasting color from that of the leather, a novel effect in material and color is secured.

The invention further resides in the construction, combination and arrangement illustrated in the accompanying drawing, and while there is shown therein a preferred embodiment, it is t0 be understood that the same is susceptible of modification and change, and comprehends other details, arrangements, features and constructions without departing from the spirit of the invention.

Fig. 5 is an enlarged fragmentary perspective view of the leather at the end of the nger and showing how the leather overlaps at the finger tip so as to avoid any seam or juncture at the finger tip.

Referring more particularly to the disclosure in the drawing and to the novel illustrative embodiment therein shown, the novel combination fabric and leather glove comprises a fabric glove lll (Fig. 3) which may be of knitted or woven construction and formed of Wool or other material suitable for the purpose of protecting the hand and provided with the usual ngers Il, I2, i3 and l and thumb I5, and a portion i6 adapted to conformably fit about the wrist of the wearer.

Aflixed'to the exterior of the knitted or woven fabric glove Ill is a partial protective covering l1 of leather or the like having substantially greater resistance to wear than does the fabric. This protective covering is preferably formed as an integral piece as shown in Fig. 4, and so designed and contoured as to cover not only the palm of the hand and the underside of the iingers as in prior constructions, but also to cover the back of the hand and fingers and with the end of the finger covering portions I8, I9 and 2Q covering the underside of all but the index finger extended at 2| so as to overlap onto the top linger covering portions 22, 23 and 24, respectively, as shown in Fig. 1.

The portion 25 covering the index finger is divided only adjacent the end thereof and is uninterrupted and formed integral at the side 2B of this finger adjacent thereto. The covering I1 is further provided With an irregular opening 21 through Which projects the thumb l of the fabric glove, and to fully protect this thumb portion against wear an insert 28 of leather or the like is provided and attached along its marginal edge to the covering lvl. This insert 28. covers the underside of the thumbV (Fig. 2) and the adjacent portion or base of the thumb at 29 in such manner as to apply a protective covering wherever Wear would be likely.

To prevent the fabric glove of the present invention from stretching and losing its shape, the novel invention comprehendsproviding a confining band or stay encompassing the wrist of the wearer. In the disclosed embodiment, this is accomplished by forming or providing the leather covering with extensions or projecting ends 39 and 3| at the opposite sides which when overlapping and stitched or sewn together provide a conforming or confining band that assures that the fabric glovewill maintain its; shape about the wrist.

When the leather covering is applied to the fabric glove in the manner disclosed, it is affixed or secured to the fabric by stitching or sewing along its marginal edges and Where the overlapping portions of leather adjacent the finger tips and thumb are joined. By thus joining these parts together, a glove is produced that is fully protected at all areas subject to wear and thatl has the Wearing qualities of one formed Wholly of leather, yet one that is highly fiexible and easy to manipulate, unique in appearance and economical to manufacture. Although theV covering is generally referred to as leather, it is to be understood that this may be any material having the qualities of leather in its resistance to wear and suitable for the intended use.

Having thus disclosed the invention, I claim:

1. In combination, a completely formed knitted fabric glove having fingers and a portion adapted to encompass the wrist of the wearer, and a partial outer covering of leather sewn to the glove for covering and protecting against wear the top, bottom and ends of the fingers, the bottom of the thumb and the palm and top of the glove over the back of the hand but stopping short of the wrist portion, said leather covering where it extends over the top and palm of the glove be.- ing integral and provided with a narrow confining part encompassing the fabric glove adjacent the wrist to maintain the shape of the fabric glove and with the portions of the` fabric glove along a side thereof between the confining part and the end of the little finger and along the 4 sides of the fingers being free of leather and remaining uncovered.

In a glove construction, a completely formed fabric glove having fingers and a portion for covering the wrist, an integral section of leather having a part covering and extending completely over the palm and over the back of the hand to adjacent but short of the wrist, and other parts covering the top and underside of the fingers and With the finger covering parts projecting over the ends of the fingers, and a leather insert covering the underside of the thumb, portions of the fabric` glove along one side from the end of the little finger to adjacent the Wrist and at the sides of the fingers being, devoid of leather to thereat expose the fabric.

3. In combination, a completely formed fabric glove of the finger type, and a partial exterior covering of leather having substantially greater Wear resisting properties than the fabric and secured thereto, said covering extending over the entire palm and over an edge and the 'back of the fabric glove andv over the fabric of the top, underside and ends of the fingers but being interrupted along one edge, between the fingers and the back of the thumb so as to retain the fabric cf the glove uncovered thereat and enhance the flexibility of the glove and yet protecting the fabric glove wherever Wear is likely to occur.

4. In combination with a completely formed fabric glove having fingers and a portion adapted to coverthe Wrist, a leathei` covering providing a protective surface covering for the exterior of the palm, the back, the upper and lower sides of the fingers and With portions of the leather overlapping the tipsv of the fingers of the fabric glove, said covering being open along one edge of the glove and along the edges of the fingers to per mit flexing of the uncovered portions of the fabric.
