C, 4 Application June 23, 1950, Serial No. 169,983 1 Claim. (01. 254-1391) This invention relates to a portable hoist or lift designed for attachment to a tractor.
An object of this invention is to provide a portable hoist or a crane which can be attached to a tractor and connected with the power take-- off so that logs or other articles may be raised and moved.
Another object of this invention is to provide a portable hoist or crane which can be used for lifting and carrying small logs or the like-in swampy territory so that the logs may be moved to higher ground.
A further object of this invention is to provide a device of this kind which is of simple construction and which includes a hydraulic brake for the hoisting drum which is connected to the hydraulic pressure system of the tractor.
With the above and other objects in view, my invention consists in the arrangement, combination and details of construction disclosed in the drawings and specification, and then more particularly pointed out in the appended claim.

Figure 1 is a detailed side elevation of a portable hoist or crane constructed according to an embodiment of this invention.

Figure 3 is a fragmentary sectional view taken on the line 3-3 of Figure 1.
Figure 4 is a sectional view taken on the line 4-4 of Figure 1.
Figure 5 is a fragmentary sectional view taken on the line 5-5 of Figure 2.
Referring to the drawing the numeral l0 desig nates generally an elongated tubular boom or frame member which is secured to an inverted U- shaped frame or bolster l I. The frame or bolster II has secured to the lower portions of the legs [2 thereof spindles I3, and wheels M are rotatably carried by spindles [3. The bight or upper bar I5 of the frame member H has secured thereto an upstanding plate l6 through which the boom engages and the boom I0 is firmly secured as by welding or the like to the plate The rear end of the boom ID has secured thereto a substantially U-shaped hitch supporting member l1, and a coupling member I8 is pivotally connected by means of a pivot l9 to a right angularly disposed pivot 20 which extends through a pair of ears 2| fixed to the U-shaped member H. The boom member ID is braced by means of a truss rod 22 which is fixed to the upper side of the boom ID at the opposite ends thereof and is braced relative to the boom [0 and the frame l l by means of upwardly convergent bracing bars 23.
A winding drum 24 is rotatably mounted on a horizontally disposed and transversely extending shaft 25 which is journalled in bearings 25 carried by supporting members 21. The supporting members 21 are of substantially U-shape and are secured'to a rectangular frame 28 which is disposed rearwardly of the inverted frame member Hand is fixed relative to the boom Hi.
As shown in Figure 3 the boom It) extends through and is fixed in the transversely extending end members 29 which, with the outer side members 30, form the frame 28. The bearing supporting members 2'! are also braced by means of downwardly and rearwardly inclined bracing bars 3| which are secured to the forward portions of the supporting members 21 and are secured to the outer portions of the frame member II.
The shaft 25 has fixed thereon a bevel gear 32 disposed in a housing 33, and a gear 34 is fixed on a shaft 35 journalled through the housing 33 and rotatably engaging through a tubular housing 36 which extends rearwardly of the gear housing 33. The shaft 35 has connected with the rear end thereof a universal joint 31 which has an extension shaft 38 connected therewith, and the extension shaft 38 is adapted to be connected to the power take-off of a tractor.
A clutch member 39 of conventional construction is connected with the shaft 25, and the winding drum 24 and an upwardly projecting clutch lever 39a extends from the clutch 39 in a position convenient to a person standing on a platform P which is fixed in rearwardly projecting position with respect to bearing supporting members 31 and the boom I0.
The frame member I l is braced relative to the boom 10 by means of a pair of rearwardly divergent bracing bars 40 secured at their forward ends to the boom [0 at the forward end of the latter, and the bracing bars 40 are fixed at their rear ends to the outer portions of the inverted U- frame ll. Rearwardly convergent bracing bars 4| are fixed at their forward ends to the frame member II and to the outer sides of the winch supporting frame 28. A pair of bracing bars 42 are also fixed between the rearwardly divergent bracing bars 40 and the boom ID.
A hydraulic brake structure 43 of conventional construction is correlated with the winding drum 24 at the end thereof opposite from the clutch 37 and is adapted to be connected by pipes 44 to a pressure supply source which is available on the tractor. A suitable valve (not shown) is connected to the pressure lines 44 so that the hydraulic brake may be operated at will.
In the use and operation of this portable hoist which is commonly termed a snaking horse, the rear end of the hoist is connected by the coupling member l8 to the rear end of the tractor. The cable 45 which is wound on the drum 24 is extended over a grooved pulley 46 carried by a clevis 4! pivotally secured to the forward end of the boom ID. The cable 45 has secured to the forward end thereof a log clamping tong 48.
Shaft 33 is operated from the power take-off and with clutch lever 39a swung to a clutching position, drum 24 will be rotated to wind cable 45 about the drum and raise the clamping or gripping member 48. The log in raised position may then be moved to the desired location, It
will be understood that the clamping or gripping member 48 may be engaged with the log adjacent one end thereof so as to raise one end and permit the log to be dragged from one areatoanother.
This hoist or crane has been designed particu-. larly for use in raising and moving relatively small logs from swampy or soft ground.
What is claimed is:
A portable hoist comprising an elongated boom, a U-shaped bolster afiixed to said boom intermediate the ends thereof, Wheels carried by said bolster, bracing bars fixed to said boom and said bolster and converging from said bolster toward 4 said boom, a rectangular frame member secured to said boom and said bolster rearwardly of said bolster, journals carried by the sides of said frame member; a shaft rotatable in said journals, a drum rotatable with said shaft, a cable wound on said drum, a sheave pivotally carried by the end of said boom, said cable extending over said sheave. a log gripping member secured to the end of said cable, a source of power, a clutch, a drive shaft including a universal joint connected to said clutch and said source of power, a connection between the clutch and said drum for rotating said drum, and hydraulic brake means for said drum.
