Dec. 30, 1952 E. w. KUMMER 2,623,749
GAME BOARD POCKET WITH BALL REMOVING DEVICE Filed June 12, 1950 Zinnentor ERNEST W. KUMMER my f attornegs Patented Dec. 30, 1952 OFFICE GAME BOARD POCKET WITH BALL REMOVING DEVICE Ernest W. Kummer, Denver, 0010.
Application June 12, 1950, Serial No. 167,528
1 Claim. 1
This invention relates to improvements in miniature golf game boards and is a continuation-in-part of my copending application, Serial No. 565,448 filed November 28, 1944, now Patent No. 2,510,985 June 13, 1950.
In said copending application I have disclosed a miniature golf game board having spaced pockets around the edge thereof and the present invention relates to the details of these pockets per se.
The principal object of the invention is to provide a novel pocket construction and ball removing device for same.
Other objects, advantages, and salient features will become more apparent from a consideration of the description to follow, the appended claim, and the accompanying drawing, in which:
Figure 1 is a fragmentary plan View of a portion of the game board with a pocket disposed therein;
Figure 2 is a section taken on line 2-2, Figure 1;
Figure 3 is a section taken on line 33, Figure Figure 4 is a section taken on line 4-4, Figure 3;
Figure 5 is a top plan view of the pocket with the ball removing device inserted therein;
Figure 6 is a side elevation of the ball removing device;
Figure 7 is an end elevation of the device shown in Figure 6;
Figure 8 is a top plan view of a slightly modified pocket and ball removing device and Figure 9 is a fragmentary section taken on line 9, Figure 8.
Referring in detail to the drawing, the game board is formed from a base comprising a large number of transversely extending pieces of lumber l5 which have secured to the top thereof boards l6 which extend transversely. Surrounding the upper edge of the board is a Wall I I having a pocket l9 recessed therein, wall I! also havin an inner lining strip 2i made of Wood, rubber, or other elastic material. The pocket is is preferably made from some suitable material such as cast iron, any other metal, hard rubber, or any suitable synthetic material. The pocket is elongated as shown in Figure 1, and of a depth substantially equal to the distance from the top of wall I! to the top surface of the base l5. One side of the pocket is provided with a notch O, the bottom of which is on the level with the surface of boards i6. The pocket is of such size that it will accommodate several balls of the size employed in playing the game, four being shown in Figure 8 and in Figures 5 and 6 two balls have been shown.
The dipper or ball remover, which has been designated in its entirety by reference numeral 22, is preferably constructed from sheet metal and has a dipper-like portion from which the wall 23 extends upwardly as shown in Figures 3 and 4. Wall 23 is curved forwardly, as shown in Figure 5, and a handle 24 is Welded or otherwise secured to wall 23 so as to assume the position shown in Figure 3 to 7. The upper edge of wall 22 of the dipper is on the level with or slightly lower than the bottom of notch 0 so as not to interfere with the free entry of the balls during the game. The vertex 25 serves to divert the balls toward the ends of the dipper. At the end of each game, the balls can be quickly removed by grasping the dipper handle 24 and lifting the dipper and balls out of the pocket. After the balls have been removed the dipper is replaced in the pocket.
Figures 8 and 9 illustrate a slight modification wherein the pocket 19a and dipper 22a are made somewhat longer and will accommodate four golf balls. The pocket is of any material, as previously described, and is provided with a flange ,2 around its upper edge. The dipper 22a is of cast metal, such as aluminum, and handle 24a is secured in a boss b having a vertex 25a which serves the same purpose as 25 in the previous embodiment. The bottom of the dipper 22a, like dipper 22, has its highest point at the center, and slopes downwardly on each side thereof, so that the balls will roll toward the ends of the dipper.
Having described the invention, what I claim as new is:
In combination, a ball receiving pocket of elongated cup shape having a wall with a notch therein through which a ball may pass into the pocket, a ball removing device comprising; an elongated dipper of a size and shape to be received in the pocket and to rest on the bottom thereof, the bottom of the dipper sloping downwardly away 3 from the middle point thereof, one longitudinal wall of the dipper being higher than the other, the lower wall terminating at the level of the bottom of the notch, and a handle secured at its lower end to the higher wall at a point midway between the ends thereof, the higher wall having an inwardly extending projection at its middle point for directing an entering ball towards an end of the dipper.
