wazzzn Patented Dec. 9, 1952 FOLDING SEAT AND BACK REST George P. McEntire, Topeka, Kans., assignor to Incorporated, Topeka, Kans., a corporation of Kansas Application September 20, 1947, Serial No. 775,232
McEntire Brothers,
2 Claims.
This invention relates to portable seats and back rests which are adapted to be placed on the ground or on benches to provide for seating comfort and back support. Such seats are particularly useful at picnics, or for fishing, or for viewing sporting events, or the like.
The principal object of this invention is to provide an improved portable seat and back rest wherein it may be readily and compactly folded for easy and convenient carrying, wherein it may be readily extended for use, wherein a comfortable seat and back rest is provided, and wherein the same may be inexpensively manufactured.
Other objects and advantages will become apparent to those skilled in the art upon reference to the accompanying specification, claims and drawing, in which- Fig. 1 is a perspective view of the portable seat and back rest folded for carrying;
Fig. 2 is a perspective view showing the portable seat and back rest extended for use;
Fig. 3 is a vertical sectional view taken substantially along the line 3--3 of Fig. 2;
Fig. 4 is an enlarged partial sectional view showing the seat and back rest extended;
Fig. 5 is a view similar to Fig. 4, but showing the seat and back rest folded;
Fig. 6 is a partial sectional view taken from the the right of Fig. 5 showing the seat and back rest folded; and
Fig. '7 is a perspective view of the end of one side member of the back rest.
The seat and back rest of this invention is generally designated III and include-s a seat frame I I and a back rest frame I2.
The seat frame II consists of a substantially U- shaped strap, preferably metallic, having side portions I3 and I5 and a rear portion I4. Supporting strips, preferably metallic, connect the side portions I3 and I5 and are secured thereto by rivets IT. The ends of the strips I6 are bent upwardly at right angles so that the bottoms of the strips I6 are substantially flush with the bottom of the strap. This provides an even foundation for the seat.
A cushion I8 is supported by the strips IS within the confines of the strap and the cushion is preferably provided with flaps I9 through which the strips I6 extend whereby the cushion is secured to the seat frame.
The back rest frame I2 includes a pair of angle members 23, preferably metallic, which face each other as illustrated in Figures 1 and 2. A reinforcing strip 24 connects the anglemembers 23 and is secured thereto by rivets 25. Bracing strips 26 are connected to angle members 23 and to the reinforcing strip 24 by rivets 21 so that the back rest frame is a rigid construction. A back rest 28 preferably made of fabric is carried by the upper ends of the angle members 23 and in this respect the back rest 28 is provided with flaps 29, sewed at 30. To prevent the back rest from slipping downwardly on the angle members 23, it is secured to the angle members 23 by screws or rivets 3 I.
The outer leg of each angle member 23 is extended as at 32 and the inner leg terminates short of the outer leg in an abutment 33. The back rest frame thus formed is pivotally mounted on the seat frame by means of rivets 34, the rivets extending through suitable holes in the extended outer leg of the angle members and in the strap. The outer legs of the angle members are mounted on the outside of the strap so that the back rest frame may be folded downwardly over the seat frame as is illustrated in Figures 1, 5 and 6, thus providing a compact unit which may be conveniently carried. The rear portion I4 of the strap of the seat frame provides a suitable carrying handle as is illustrated in Fig. 1.
When the seat is to be used the back rest frame is extended to the position shown in Figures 2, 3 and 4 and when so extended the abutments 33 on the inner legs of the angle members engage the top edge of the strap whereby the back rest frame is held securely in extended position.
While for purposes of illustration one form of this invention has been disclosed, the other forms thereof may become apparent to those skilled in the art, and therefore, this invention is to be limited only by the scope of the appended claims.
I claim as my invention:
1. A folding seat and back rest comprising a seat frame including a substantially U-shaped strap providing rear and side portions and supporting strips connecting the side portions, a seat cushion supported within the strap by the supporting strips, a back rest frame including a pair of facing angle members, with the outer leg of each angle member extended, a back rest connected between the angle members, and means for pivotally mounting the extended legs of the angle members to the outside of the side portions of the strap of the seat frame adjacent the rear thereof to fold the back rest frame over the seat frame with the rear portion of the strap forming a carrying handle and to extend the back rest frame substantially normal to the seat frame with the other legs of the angle members contacting the top of the strap of the seat frame.
3 2. A folding seat and back rest comprising a seat frame including a substantially U-shaped strap providing rear and side portions and supporting strips connecting the side portions, a seat cushion supported within the strap by the sup:
porting strips,; a back rest frame including a pair of facing angle members, with the outer leg of each angle member extended, and a transverse.
strip and bracing strips connecting the other legs of the angle members adjacent .the extended,
outer legs thereof, a fabric back restconnected between the angle members and means for ply; otally mounting the extended legs of the angle members to the outside of the side portions of the strap of the seat frame adjacent the rear thereof to fold the back rest frame over the seat frame with the rear portion of the strap forming a carrying handle and to extend the back rest frame substantially normal to the seat frame with the other legs of the angle members contacting the top of the strap of the seat frame.
