'1 This invention refers to -a `rectangular or quadratic construction block of wood for dif'- :ferent lpurposes, consisting .of vboards which are connected to each other by at least two edge locking-pieces and which may also be connected by inner locking-pieces, with which the boards are glued together. The block may be used for wall, floor and ceiling blocks for building, as flooring, as panels, for concrete moulding forms etc.
The invention refers more specifically to a construction block and the like comprising a plurality of boards arranged in side by side relationship, the boards having end portions thereof cut away to form end flanges thereon, edge locking-pieces extending transversely of said boards in contact with the ends thereof, and a sheet member covering a side of said boards and extending over said edge locking pieces. 'I'he portions of said sheet extending over said edge pieces are glued to said edge pieces, said edge pieces being glued to said end anges of the boards opposite the connection thereof with said sheet, and said end flanges of the boards having a portion thereof out of contact with said edge pieces inwardly toward said boards. 'I'his portion as well as the unglued portion of the covering sheet being flexible or yielding so that no stresses, that could break the glued joints can be transferred between said edge locking-pieces, said boards and said covering sheet.
This invention refers further to a construction block and the like comprising a plurality of boards arranged in side by side relationship, said boards having end portions thereof cut away to form an upper and lower flange thereon and a space therebetween, the lower of said flanges extending beyond the upper of said flanges. Edge locking-pieces extend transversely of said boards, said edge pieces being grooved to abut said upper flange and being in contact with that portion of the lower of said flanges extending beyond the upper. A sheet member covers the upper side of said boards and extends over said edge locking pieces, said sheet being glued to said edge locking-pieces but free from said boards, said edge pieces being glued to the extended portions of the lower of said flanges, said space between said flanges being only partially filled by said edge pieces.
'I'he invention is illustrated by three examples in the accompanying drawing, in which Fig. 1 shows a cross sectional view of one form and Fig. 2 is a similar view showing another example of the invention. Fig. 3 is a perspective View of JIigl.v Eig. 4 illustrates -'I indicates ledge "locking-pieces ('also `inner locking-pieces can be used, lbut are not Ashown in the drawing for simplicity), 3 indicates boards, 4 an end flange formed in the board by cutting a part of the board away. L is a glued joint between the piece l and the board 3 and F indicates an unglued portion on the flange 4, which forms a flexible or yielding joint between the board and the locking-pieces.
On account of this flexible joint no breaking of the glued joint L can take place.
The upper side of the blocks is covered by a sheet l0, as stated above. This sheet I0 is connected by a glue-joint L with the locking-pieces l, but its remaining part is free from the surface of boards 3, so that the whole of the upper side of the boards 3 can be considered as constituting a flexible part F.
It is especially pointed out, that the covering sheets IU give extraordinarily fine and smooth surfaces, especially when made of cardboard or such like fiber material, which is moistened and swells or expands before being glued down, after which in a dried up state it shrinks to form a tightened, even surface.
1t is also pointed out, that when as stated above the edge and the inner locking-pieces if used on one side of the block are covered from outside by means of a sheet ID stretched over the block, this also includes the form of construction, that the sheet l!! does not cover the Whole of the locking-pieces. The sheet Ill can, depending on the width of the locking-pieces, also be sunk in A a cutout portion in the locking-pieces, in which case it is glued together with the locking-pieces only over the said cutouts, while the remaining portion of the locking-pieces remains uncovered. This is illustrated in perspective in Fig. 4, which in other respects corresponds to the example of Fig. 2, but where the sheet I0 does not extend to the outer edge of the edge pieces. Instead the sheet I0 is sunk into a recess in the edge pieces.
I claim:
l. A construction block and the like comprising a plurality of boards arranged in side by side relationship, said boards having end portions thereof cut away to form end flanges thereon, edge locking-pieces extending transversely of said boards in contact with the ends thereof, and a sheet member covering a side of said boards and extending over said edge locking-pieces, said sheet being glued to said edge locking pieces but free from said boards, said edge pieces being glued to said end fianges of the boards opposite the connection thereof with said sheet, said end flanges of the boards having a portion thereof out of contact with said edge pieces inwardly toward said boards, this portion as well as the unglued portion of the covering sheet being exible and yielding so that no stresses, that could break the glued joints can be transferred between said edge locking-pieces, said boards and said covering sheet.
2. A construction block and the like compris-v ing a plurality of boards arranged in side by side relationship, said boards having end portions thereof cut away to form an upper and lower flange thereon and a space therebetween, the lower of said anges extending beyond the upper of said flanges, edge locking-pieces extending transversely of said boards, said edge pieces being grooved to abut said upper flange and being in contact with that portion of the lower of said anges extending beyond the upper, a sheet member covering the upper sidev of said boards and extending over said Yedge locking-pieces, said sheet being glued to said edge locking-pieces but free from said boards, the unglued portion of said sheet being flexible and yielding, said edge pieces being glued to the extended portions of the lower of said flanges, said space between said flanges being only partially lled by said edge pieces.
