Application February '7, 1950, Serial No. 142,848
. 1 This invention relates to a hand grip wrench, and more particularly to a hand grip wrench having a leverand cam feed for the-Sliding jaw. An object of this invention is to provide a hand grip wrench, wherein the sliding jaw has a coarse adjustment for moving the latter to a select position relative to the fixed jaw, and has a hand actuable positive means for forcing the sliding jaw into engagement with an object held between the two jaws after, adjustment.
Another object of this invention is to provide a hand grip wrench which can be applied to and removed from an object held between the fixed and sliding jaws without the necessity of readjusting the jaws.
A further object of this invention is to provide a hand grip wrench whichis simple in structure and cheap to manufacture.
.Other objects of the invention will become apparent upon consulting the specification in conjunction with the drawings.
In the drawings: 7
Figure 1 is a side elevational view of the hand grip wrench of the present invention, with the lever and cam feed in its position for forcibly urging the sliding jaw against an object held between saidjaws;
Figure 2 is a fragmentary sectional view of the hand grip wrench taken along the line 2-2 of Figure 1;
Figure 3 is a sectional view taken along the line 3-3 of Figure 1;
Figure 4 is a fragmentary sectional view, with parts omitted, taken along the line 4-4! of Figure 2.
Referring now to the drawings, wherein like reference numerals have been utilized throughout the several views. to designate like parts, there is shown the hand grip wrench, generally indicated by the numeral I8, said wrench comprising a head II and a handle I2 dependently supported therefrom. The head is provided with a cutout I3 which extends inwarly from one side face thereof and terminates at a point spaced from the other side face thereof. One of the opposed spaced surfaces of the slot I3 is provided with a plurality of gripping teeth extending therealong,
as indicated at M, to thereby provide a fixed griD- ping jaw I5.
Extending through the other one of theopposed surfaces of the slot I3 and slidably supported in the head II is a'slidable jaw I6, said jaw including a gripping head I! and an elon- 2 Claims. (Cl. 8187) 2 gated threaded shank I8. The gripping head I! has one face provided with a plurality of gripping teeth extending therealong, as indicated at I9, which are in opposed relation with respect to the gripping teeth I4 on the fixed jaw I5. The other end face of the gripping member I1 is provided with an inwardly extending groove '20 for embracingly receiving and supporting the adjacent end of the elongated, threaded shank I8. It is to be noted that said other end face of the gripping member I! is disposed in an upwardly inclined plane with respect to the first-named end face thereof. The portions of the gripping head ll adjacent the groove 29 are each provided with an elongated slot, as indicated at 2|,
the slots being in registry with each other. A pin '22 extends through the registering slots and the adjacent end of the elongated shank I8 to thereby slidably support the gripping head ll of the sliding jaw I6 for movement through a limited path longitudinally of the fixed jaw I5 and transversely of the shank IS.
The head II is provided with a longitudinally extending slot 23 which has one end adjacent the other one of the opposed surfaces of the cutout I3. Provided also in the head II is alongitudinally arranged well 24 which has its open end in communication with the other end of the slot 23 and slidably receives the other end of the shank Id. The shank I8 is positioned longitudinally of the head II and extends through the other one of the opposed surfaces and the slot 23 while being supported in the head II for reciprocatory movement with respect to the fixed jaw I5. Disposed within the slot 23 and circumposed about the intermediate portion of the shank I8 is a hand actuable feed screw or feed nut 25 which is in threaded engagement with the threaded portion of the shank I8, the latter being oppositely threaded. Circumposed about the shank I8 intermediate the feed screw 25 and the one end of the slot 23 is a resilient member or coil spring 21' having on end bearing against the adjacent one end or bounding wall, as indicated at 28 and having the other end bearing against an annular flange 29, which is carried by the adjacent end face of the feed screw '2 5. The outer peripheral wall of the feed screw 25 is knurled, as indicated at 30, such that it may be grasped to impart a rotary movement thereto to move the sliding jaw I6 toward and away from the fixed jaw I5. Circumposed about the threaded shank I8 intermediate the feed screw 25 and the and imparting a rotary motion thereto.
gagement with the object 32.
possible.
socket-containing bounding wall of the slot 23 is a thrust washer 4i.
Positioned exteriorly of the feed screw 25 and operatively connected thereto is a lever and cam feed, generally indicated by the numeral 3|, for positively urging the sliding jaw l6 into engagement with an object 32 held between the fixed and sliding jaws. The lever and cam feed comprises a lever 33 positioned in spaced, parallel relation with respect to the handle 12 and having one end operatively connected to a cam means, generally indicated by the numeral 34, the cam means being supported for rotation about an axis transverse of said handle and being in abutting engagement with the adjacent end face of the thrust washer 45. The lever 33 includes a handle 35 and a U-shaped yoke 36 having its bight fixedly secured to the handle 35. The legs of the yoke 36 overlie opposite sides of the head H below the thrust washer 45. Fixedly secured to the inner faces of the legs of the yoke 36 is the cam means 34 which includes opposed cams 31, 38, said cams projecting beyond the free ends of the leg and being loosely seated in the complementary arcuate grooves 38, 40 provided in the bounding walls of the socket 24. The cams 31 and 38 underlie and abut the adjacent end face of the thrust washer 45 and urge the latter out of seating engagement with the socket provided bounding wall of the channelway 23, when the handle 35 of the lever 33 is rotated, into spaced parallel relation with respect to the handle l2 of the wrench .l 0, to thereby effect the movement of the sliding jaw l6. The thrust washer 45 is provided with annular flange 41 for guidingly receiving the cam plates 31,. 38. The side walls of the handle l2 are provided with transversely extending, undercut portions, as indicated at 4!, such that the cam plates 37 and 38 may be removed from the complementary grooves 39, 40, and the lever and cam feed detached from the handle '12 of the hand grip wrench Ill.
When the hand grip wrench I is to be utilized to grip the object 32 between the fixed and sliding jaws l5, 16, respectively, the user adjusts the sliding jaw IE to a select position with respect to the fixed .jaw by grasping the feed screw After adjustment, the handle of the lever 33 is grasped-and rotated until the handle abuts the handle l2 of the hand grip wrench I 0. As the lever 33 is being rotated, the cams 3! and 38 apply a positive force to the thrust washer and the sliding jaw IE to force the latter into tight en- By means of the cooperation between the adjusting means and the gripping head [1, a unique final adjustment is As the shank I8 is urged upward and contactis made with the object 32, the gripping head slides upon the one end of the shank l8 in an upwardly inclined plane to effect a final adjustment. While the handle 35 of the lever 33 is held in its position of abutment with the handle l2 of the hand grip wrench H], the user continues to impart a positive force to the object 32. When the user releases the handle 35 of the lever 33, the resilient member 21 urges the feed screw 25 and thrust washer 45 into seating engagement with theadjacent bounding wall of the slot 23. Accordingly, the hand grip wrench H! may be removed from the object 32 and reapplied to the same object at some later time without the necessity of a readjustment.
Although only one embodiment of the invention has been described, numerous modifications can be made without departing from the spirit of the invention as set forth in the appended claims.
