Application July 14, 1950, Serial No. 173,923
This invention relates to an improved sleeping garment of the bag type adapted for use by infants and small children.
The primary object of the present invention is to provide a safe and comfortable garment of the above kind which will allow freedom of movement and permit ready .access to the child when in need of attention, and which may be readily put on and taken off of the child.
Another object is to provide a garment of the above type which is simple in construction and inexpensive to manufacture.
The exact nature of the invention will be apparent from the following description when considered with the accompanying drawing, in
which:
Figure 1 is a top plan view of a garment constructed in accordance with the present inven-a tion, with portions of the top or front member turned back;
Figure 2 is an enlarged fragmentary transverse section through the garment as it appears in use, the plane of section being indicated by the line 2-2 of Figure 1;
Figure 3 is a longitudinal section taken on the line 3-3 of Figure 1.
Referring in detail to the drawing, the present garment includes a top or front member 5, and a bottom or back member 6 in the form of elongated sheets of annel or other suitable fabric. The major lower portion of member E and the entire member are of similar size and shape and are directly stitched together as at 'l along their adjacent side edges, except at the end portions of the member 5 to provide the latter with top and bottom bib and closure aps 8 and 9, respecn tively, that may be turned back to facilitate access to the child on which the garment is used, and to facilitate putting on and taking off the garment. Suitable cooperating snap fastener members Il) and I I are provided to secure the bib flap 8 in its operative position, the members IIJ being provided at the upper corners of said flap. Other cooperating snap fastener members I2 and I3 are provided along the side and bottom edges of the members 5 and 6, at the lower ends thereof, to secure the closure flap 9 in closed position. The members 5 and 6 preferably taper slightly from the ap 9 to the top of member 5, and the upper portion of member 6, above the upper end of member 5, is abruptly tapered as at I4 and is provided centrally of its upper edge with a shallow arcuate neckline recess I5.
Respectively secured on the inside of ap 8 along its upper edge and centrally between its 1 Claim. (Cl. 2-69.5)
sides, and on the inside of the opposed portion of member t are elongated transversely disposed facing strips I6 and Il' under which are threaded drawstrings i8 and I9 adapted to have their ends passed about the sides of the body directly under the arms and tied together, as at 29 in Figure 2, to securely hold the garment around the body. To allow for proper adjustment and further hold the garment snugly in place, as well as to prevent it from slipping down over the body, adjustably connectable strap-s 2l and 22 are provided to fasten over the shoulders. The straps 2| are secured on the inside of member 6 and extend upwardly from the facing strip Il to points above the top of said member. A button 23 is attached to the upper end and disposed at the upper side of each strap ZI. The straps 22 have wide lower ends which may integrally join with the upper edge of facing strip I6, and a longitudinal series of button holes 2li is provided in the free end portion of each of the same for selective reception of the button 23 of the cooperating strap 2 I. The straps 22 are brought over the shoulders and extended rearwardly under the straps 2| when buttoned thereto, thereby keeping the ends of the strap-s 22 in a comfortable position and out of view. If desired, the members 5 and E may be suitably lined with cotton outing material.
It will be particularly noted that the garment provides no obstruction or construction around the neck to interfere with proper breathing. Also, the garment cannot creep up or down, and the child will be allowed complete freedom of movement without danger of becoming uncovered.
Having described the invention, what is claimed as new is:
A childs sleeping garment of the bag type comprising a front member and a back member in the form of elongated sheets, the major lower portion of said back member and the entire front member being of the same size and shape and stitched together along their adjacent side edges except at the end portions of said front member to provide the latter with a top bib flap and a bottom closure flap, releasable means at the free corners of the bib flap to secure the latter in operative position, releasable means along the edges of the closure flap to secure the latter in closed position, elongated transversely disposed facing strips respectively secured on the inside of the bib flap along its upper edge and centrally between its sides, and on the inside of the opposed portion of the back member, drawstrings threaded under said facing strips and adapted to be passed about the sides of the body directly under the 3 .Y arns and tied together. and pairs of coacting UNITED STATES PATENTS shoulder straps projecting from and carried by Number Name Date the tops of said front and back members and 1,332 301 Moore Man 2.1920 having means to adjustably connect; the same, 1 313'849 Hadad Aug 11 1931 said shoulder straps being extended upwardly 5 2179424 Phiuips et a1 Nov. 7'1939 from the facing StrPS- 2441f9oo Oswald May 18, 1948 MEADE s' HEETER" 2,530,606 Farrington Nov. 21, 1950 REFERENCES CITED FOREIGN PATENTS The f'llwiggrferenees are of rec'o'rd in the 10 Numhe'r 'f'Coun'try Date
