Description
Sept. 9, 1952 A. RAPPL ACCESSORY CONTROL SYSTEM Filed Jan. 26, 1949 INVENTOR BY A/YZOI? fia ap/ QM, M M QM.
ATTORNEYS Patented Sept. 9, 1952 "Trice Products Corporation, Buffalo, N. Y. L Application January 2 1949, Serial No. 72,964"
This'invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in accessory systems for motor vehicles and more especially to the fluid pressure type wherein the accessory motoris supplied with a pressure fluid,*either 'negative or positive, for actuating the same.
Various connections to the power plant have been madeto utilize its power in the generation of fluid pressure for the operation of motor vehicle accessories with the much desired flexibility in performancecharacteristic of the. pneumatic type of accessory. These have heretofore required the engine to be operating in order to generate'the desired fluid pressure. The object of the presentinvention is to provide an improved accessory system in which-the fluid pressure may be furnished without the necessity of starting the engine of the vehicle.
A further object is to provide an accessory system which is practical and efiicient and one wherein the engine starting system is so combined therewith as to enable reliable accessory performance at all times.
The foregoing and other objects will manifest themselves as this description progresses, reference being made therein to the accompanying drawing wherein:
Fig. 1 is a diagrammatic view showing a practical application of the present invention; and
Fig. 2 is a partial layout of the combined system.
Referring more particularly to the drawing, the numeral l designates the starter motor for the vehicle engine 2, the latter having its flywheel gear- 3 designed to be engaged by the starter gear 4 upon energization of the solenoid 5. This solenoid is connected into the usual engine starting circuit 6 and, upon becoming operative, actuates the gear shifting lever l and at the same time serves in the capacity of a relay to close the switch 8 and the starting motor circuit 9 with the battery In which is grounded at 10'. This starter system is conventional and well known.
In accordance with this invention, the starting motor is employed to drive a pump as a source of accessory-operating pressure, either negative or positive, and in a manner to remove the motor, in effect, from the remainder of the starting system. To this end, an accessory control switch II is connected by wire l2 to the battery I and by a circuit wire l3 to a relay switch M which latter is grounded through the motor I. The relay switch closes the motor field circuit comprising the wires l and Hi, to
- 3 Claims. ('01. se-60y} the exclusion of the'solenoidal switch 5,3, The switch ll may be 101 any suitable formand is herein illustrated as combined 'with a valve Hi to constitute the control for the accessory, the latter being shown, by way of example, as a top lift mechanism having a fluid motor with a chamber I1 and a piston l 8.
A fluid line of communication extends from the control valve I!) to each end of the chamber [1, as indicated at 20 and 2|. The movable valving member 22 is yieldably held in 'a neutral position by opposed springs 23 and 24 and may be manually shifted by grasping the knob 25. In either operative position, the valve will connect-one side of the accessory motor [1, ll! to the electrically driven rotary pump or compressor 26 by a pipe 21, as the source of 'superatmospheric pressure, and its opposite side to the intake manifold 28 of the vehicle engine by a pipe 29, as the source of sub-atmospheric pressure. During this valve operation, a finger 30 on the valving member will depress a. corresponding one of the switch fingers 3| to close the switch H. When the springs 23, 24 restore the-valving member to its neutral position, the switch will be opened. The valving member 22 is provided with an axial passage 32 having radial ports 33 by which casing ports 20', 21 and 29' are se lectively connected and a peripheral channel 34 by which the casing ports 20', 2| and 21' are selectively connected.
For either lifting or, lowering the top, the motorist will grasp the knob 25 and shift the valve accordingly thereby closing the auxiliary motor circuit including the starter motor I where upon the latter will become energized 'to operate the pump and supply a positive pressure which will cooperate with the suction in pneumatically operating the top-lift motor [1, Hi. When in its neutral position, the accessory ports 33 will remain in restricted communication with the respective ports 20 and-2| and through the latter in communication with the peripheral channel 34, with the result that when the engine starting system is in use and the pump is generating air currents, the air stream may discharge into 7he atmosphere by way of the peripheral channel and the axial-passage 32 and out through a vent 35.
While a top-lift'motor has been illustrated, it is obvious that any other fluid actuated accessory may be substituted or even combined therewith. The starting motor of the vehicle is employed in the secondary capacity as a reliable means for driving the pump so as to ofthe appended claims. I
What is claimed is: I 1. A control system for a fluid actuated accessory of a motor vehiclegcomprising in 60m? valve normally venting the pump to the atmosphere and interrupting both communications and operable to reestablish such communications and to close the vent, and means operable to energize the electric motor to the exclusion of the remainder of the starting system concurrently with the operation of the valve from its normal position.
