This invention relates to haircurlingdevices, and, in particular, to pin curl forming devices.

One object of this invention is to provide a-pin curl forming device which in a simple and effective manner forms a pin curl, holds the pincurl while a so-called bobby-pin is inserted with-its legs-passing above and below the pin curl, and thenreleases the pin curl, leaving the bobby-pin in a clamping position on the pin curl. Another object is to provide a pin curl forming device having arotatable rod with a curl holding slot and a slidable guide or curl holder for not only holding the curl in position after it has been wound around the rod, but also for guiding the legs of the bobby-pin Whilethey are being inserted below and above the curl.

, Another object is toprovide a pin curl forming device of the foregoing character wherein the slider has arms for holding down the pin curl being formed and also for guiding the legs. of the hobby pin into the slot in the slider and rod, the arms being spaced apart from one another circumferentially a suflicient distance to permit the insertion of the finger-tips when holding the bobby-pin up to the edge of the guide slot, the circumferential widths of the spaces between the arms being a plurality of times greater than thecircumferential widths of said arms thereby enabling the bobby-pin to be pushed completely into position with its legs below and above the pin curl without interference from any portion of the curl holder.

Another object is to provide a modified pin curl forming device of the foregoing character wherein the curl holder or slider has wings which are especially well adapted for use with a magazine bobby-pin holder,

, Another object is to provide a pin curl forming device of the foregoing character having a ledge or shoulder thereon adapted to assist the user in: opening the bobby-pin prior to its insertio below and above the pin curl.

Referring to the drawings in detail, Figure I shows 'a pin curlforming device, generally designated Ill as'consisting generally of a curl-form,-v ing rod or body ll having a curl holder [2 slidably mounted thereon and a dividing or blocking comb I3 mounted on the upper end .of the rod I I. The rod ll is preferably of circular cross-section with one or more longitudinal grooves [4 extending lengthwise thereof. Extending inward from the lower end [5 of the rod II are one or more slots l6, two slots Hi crossing one another at right angles being the preferred arrangement, although a single slot can also be used. The slots l6 at their upper ends ll have end walls 18 inclined downward and inward toward the center I! thereof.

Slidably mounted on the rod H is the tubular sleeve portion 20 of the curl holder or slider 12, the portion 20 having projections 2| extending inward into the slots 14 so as to permit longitudinal sliding without rotation of the curl holder H. The sleeve portion 20 is provided with guide slots 22 aligned with the slots IS in the rod or body II, the sides 23 of the slots 22 being preferably flared (Figure 2) to facilitate insertion of the bobby-pin P. The curl holder I2 is also provided witha plurality of arms 25 projecting outward from the sleeve portion 20 and having curved base portions 26 leading inward from the arms 25 to the slots 22 so as to guide the bobby-pin into the slots 26 and IS in the event that it strikes to one side or the other of the slots 22. The arms 25 have bottom portions 21 adapted to rest upon the curl C (Figure 6) and prevent it from slipping or unwinding While the bobby-pin is being inserted. Mounted on the upper end 28 of the rod or body H is a dividing comb 29. The circumferential widths of the spaces between the arms 25 (Figure 2) are a plurality of times the circumferential widths of the arms 25 themselves, so that the relatively wide spaces between the relatively narrow arms 25 permit the fingers to be inserted between the arms 25 while inserting a bobby pin, without interference with the arms 25.

The modification, generally designated 30, shown in Figures 7 and 8, has a body or rod H similar to the rod H of Figures lto (Sinclusive and therefdre similarly designated'as to its component parts, including the grooves I4; Slidably mounted on the body I l is a modified curl holder or slider 3|. This consists of a sleeve portion 32 having pins 33 inserted therein and projecting I into'the longitudinal grooves M of the rod ll Secured to the sleeve portion 32 are the'longi- 4 legs A of the bobby pin P by the converging sides and curved portions 26 of the arms 25 (Figure 2) and also by the flared sides 23 of the slots 22. These portions serve to guide the ends of the legs A into the slots 22 and thence into the slots IS in the rod ll.
