CL-AMPING MEANS FOR DOORS 0F BLAST FURNACE STOVES Filed April 22, l947 INVENTOR. JOHN FRAN K BAI ER.

Patented Aug. 5, 1952 John-Frank Baier, Cleveland, Ohio, assignor to ArthuriiG.-MoKee& Co.,i Cleveland; Qhio,ra corporation of Delaware A plication April/3,2, isiig sria noisier-6f This invention relates generally to door clampingmeans' and particularly to clamps for doors of .b'last'furnace stoves. I
Prior clamps for doors of stoves for blast furnaces have employed bolts which were'stressed in' tension when the clampswereflholding the doors Jclosed; These bolts were often maltreatedby being hammered andbent orsubjectedto high temperatures and'o'coasi'onally were so weakened by maltreatment that'th'ey broke in use. The failure of those bolts co'nstit'ute'sa serious safety hazardfor the gases ingthe stoves are atv temperatures as high as 1'80'O'1F.,and underfconsiderable pressure. If a door accidentally opens completely, or even only partially, the escaping gases endanger the lives of workmen in the vicinity of the stove. The industry has faced this very real and always present hazard for a long time but has never very satisfactorily solved it heretofore.
I have solved this troublesome and long-continued problem in an effective manner by devising door clamping means including threaded members which are stressed only in compression while serving to press the door into closed position.-
Briefly described, the invention comprises a clamp which is engageable with the outer surface of the door and which has arms projecting to beyond the periphery of the door and adjustable compression members between the end portions of the clamp and fittings on the stove for pressing the clamp against the door.
Those skilled in the art will gain a further understanding of this invention upon referring to the drawings accompanying and forming a part of the specification, in which:
Figure 1 is a side elevational view of a portion of a blast furnace stove equipped with one form of apparatus of this invention; v
Figure 2 is a view taken on line 22 of Figure 1;
Figure 3 is a view taken on line 3--3 of Fig. 1;
and
Fig. 4 is a perspective View of the lower door clamp retaining bracket of the apparatus of Fig. 1, the stove on which the bracket is mounted being shown fraglnentarily.
The illustrated assembly comprises a blast furnace stove S having a flanged cylindrical portion I projecting outwardly from the stove at right angles to the axis of the stove and defining a burner access opening and a stove door seat l2, a door l3 to close said opening, and means M for v retaining the door in sealing engagement with screa s. io1-.I.-110 1-rs) I 1 seat 12:; Means comprise's a 'clamp" I l "having three arms I6, ll and: l8'extending beyond the outer periphery of doo'r' I 3, two stationary brackets"|'9 receive arms l6 and I1, and a latch .20
"movable to receive arm'l'ili. Bolts 22 are provi'ded-to.engage'arms l6 and Ill and retain them in position; these bolts being threadwise engaged withbrackets'lllt A jack'screwlz l is threadwise from adjacent-to 'the burner access opening, "and a metal block which is disposed betweentw'o of the plates and welded to all three of them. Plates 2| and Zia are spaced apart and parallel to each other and are disposed substantially horizontally, while the third plate 2Ib is disposed vertically and extends through a slot provided for the purpose in plate 2| and fits in a step cut in one edge of plate 2la. Plate 21b has an upper end with a tongue portion 2|c extending upwardly for receipt under flange l2 of the stove, as shown in Fig. 2. Block 219 is located betwen the outer edges of plates 2| and 2m and is generally L-shaped in plan so that it fits against the outer edge portion of plate Zlb between plates 2| and Zla, this said portion being provided with a transverse aperture for registry with a threaded aperture 36 extending through said block at right angles to the plane of said plate 2 lb to receive a set screw 25 for adjusting the position of clamp 14 relative to door l3. Block Zlg is additionally provided in its outer leg portion with a threaded aperture 31 extending toward the stove to receive a bolt 22 to bear against an end portion of clamp M to hold the clamp securely against door I3.
Latch 20 is 'pivotally secured to the stove for movement in the plane of the axis of the cylinder and has a central, elongated, transverse aperture to receive the end portion of arm I 8, and a In using the apparatus of this invention, truck 21 is moved into position with the clamp l4 and 1 door 13 suspended therefrom, and the door is fitted against the door seat. The upper and lower ends of the clamp are received in brackets I9, While latch 20 is moved into position to receive metal plates Bolts 22 are engaged with brackets l9 to press the clamp against the door, and jack screw 24 is engaged with the end of arm l8 and received in latch 20. Prior to the final tightening of the jack screw and bolts, any final adjustments in the position of the clamp may be made by means of set screws 25.
Having thus described the present invention so that those skilled in the art may be able to understand and'practice the same, I statev that what I desire to secure by Letters Patent is defined in what is claimed.
What is claimed is: v 1. In a blast furnace stove having an opening in its side and a door for said opening, the combination of a clamp engageable with the door exterior and including a plurality of arms extending transversely of the door, bracket means in cluding a plurality of brackets projecting from the stove adjacent to-said door periphery and having screw-threaded apertures, and means associated with the bracket means for moving the clamp relative to the door and for holding the door in position tightly against the stove and 1 closing said opening, said holding means consisting only of screw compression members screwed exterior and including a plurality of arms of substantially uniform length extending transversely of and projecting beyond the outer periphery of the door, bracket means including a plurality of brackets projecting from the stove adjacent to said door periphery and located to receive end portions of said arms and having screw-threaded apertures, and means associated with the bracket means for moving the clamp relative to the door and for holding the door in position tightly against the stove and closing said opening, said holding means consisting only of screw compression members screwed into the threaded apertures of the bracket means and extending toward the stove and bearing upon the end portions of said arms.
