2 Claims. (01. 70 ss2) This invention relates to locking devices.
It is an object of the present invention to provide a locking device which can be easily altered to match different keys so that upon the normal user i of the lock giving up its use, the lock can be changed to prohibit his future use by the new occupant of the space placed under the lock and key and also a lock which is particularly adapted for use in hotels whereby, with a simple adjustment, the lock can be changed even after each use of the key by the occupant.
Other objects of the present invention are to provide an adjustable locking device which is of simple construction, inexpensive to manufacture, easy to adjust, has a minimum number of parts, compact and durable, easy to install in the door, and efficient in operation.
For other objects and for a better understanding of the invention, reference may be had to the following detailed description taken in connection with the accompanying drawing, in which Fig. 1 is a perspective View of the adjustable locking device embodying the features of the present invention.
Fig. 2 is a fragmentary and sectional view, in part, of the locking device assembled 7 upon a door.
Fig. 3 is a longitudinal sectional view taken on line 3--3 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 4 is a longitudinal sectional view taken on line 4-4 of Fig. 1, at a different angular position.
Figs. 5 and 6 are respectively transverse sectional views taken respectively on lines 55 and 66 of Fig. 3.

2 Referring now to the figures, 2| represents a hollow cylinder which has,at one end thereof, external threads 22 for securing the cylinder within a hole .23 of a door 24. Integral with the opposite end of the-cylinder is a plate or flanged formation 25 which will appear at the front of the door. This formation may -havea plated layer '26 thereovenl igs. 3 and 4.. Ahole 21 extends through the plate formation and this hole is of less diameter than the interior diameter of the main part of the hollow cylinderil. Accordingly, a shoulder 28 is provided. Theoylinder 2] has longitudinally extending slots 30 and 3| into which slides 32 of slide assemblies 33 may be extended as the same are assembled withinthe. hollow opening of the cylinder. Several slide assembliesv 33 are fixed by means of a screw 34, Fig. 11, upon'a plate 35 and uponrods Stand 3! thereof. This plate 35 has a key (11 cm ing 38therein adapted to be aligned with key openings 39 of the assemblies. The plate is shouldered at 40 and this shouldered part extends into the opening 2! of the plate portion 25 .on the front of the door. A key 4| penetrates these key openings38 and 39. I v Each slide assembly 33 has separable casing parts 42 and 43 which, when coupled together, retain slides 32 and a spring 44 which urges the slides outwardly. The slide has a projection 45 against which the spring 44 acts and also a projection 46 on the opposite side of the slide adapted for engagement by the key 4| as it is extended through the slide assembly. The slide assemblies may be secured together by rivets 41. Openings 48 and 49 are provided in the slide assemblies so that they can be adjusted along the rods 36 and 31. The entire assembly, as shown in Fig. '7, is placed into the cylinder so that the plate shouldered portion 40 extends through the opening 21. A fourth slide assembly is mounted on the rods 36 and 31 and within the hollow cylinder for adjustment therealong whereby the arrangement can be adapted for dillerent types of keys depending upon the position towhich the assembly, as may be identified at 33', is located on the rods. At other locations, there are disposed longitudinal recesses 5|, 52 and 53 in the cylinder wall. These recesses are 120 apart and are adapted. to slidably receive adjusting members 54 respectively which have projections 55 for receiving the adjustable slide assembly 33. These adjusting members 54 are operated by screws 56 which project at their inner ends, as indicated at 51, into the ends of the recesses and which are journalled, as indicated at 58, in a rear plate 59. This rear plate 59 is fixed by screws 6| and 62 to the rear end of the hollow cylinder 2|. Each screw 56 has a pinion gear 63 thereon. Journalled on a sleeve projection 64 of the plate 59 is a large adjusting gear 65 meshing with each of the pinions and which, when turned, will cause the turning of the screws 56 and the adjustment of the slide assembly 33' through the adjusting members 54. As'pring ring 66 secures the gear 65 upon the plate 59.
On the plate 59 is a thin plate 61 which has an axially extending member 68 fixed to the same and this member 68 extends through the plate 59 for engagement with a knob 69 on a lock casing ll. When the slides 32 of the assemblies 33 are properly depressed so that the assemblies are released from the hollow cylinder, the key' will turn all of the slide assemblies and the rods 36 and 31 and the plate 67 and knob 69. The member 68 is fixed by a pin 12 to a member 13 which in turn is fixed to the platefil.
- The gear 65 has diametrically spaced'holes 15 and 16 into which a pin 71 may be extended for a given adjustment of the'gear 65, Fig. 16. This pin is'normally held outwardly by a spring l8jlying in an opening 19 in the hollow cylinder member. Accordingly anew location of the slide assembly 331 is made for each half turn of the gear 65.
The lock casing Tl secured to the door by screws 8|. A platefil is fixed to the inner side o f-the door by screws 83. A key registers with anotch in the plate 82 and in the cylinder, as indicated at 85, to keep the cylinder 21 from turning relative to its opening in the door 24.
Any shape key opening can-be used, as indicated at 81 and 88, in Figs. 14 and 15. By depressing the member 11, it releases the gear 55 so as to permit the adjustment of the gear. With each adjustment of the slide assembly 33, a different formation 89, Fig. 4, will be provided upon the key 41. This p rojection 89 will be at diiferent distances from the end of the key depending upon the adjustment; of the assembly 33'.
While various changes may be madeupon the detail construction, it shall be understood that such changes shall be within the spirit and scope 4 of the present invention as defined by the appended claims.

2. A look device as defined in claim 1, and said large gear having circumferentially spaced openings therein, a detent device engageable with said circumferentially spaced openings in sequence to hold the gear in its adjusted position and the slide assembly at the new adjusted position.
