with less cost, providing increased speed of production of paper as compared with machines of the prior art, and being very economical to operate.
- A further object of the invention is to provide an improved paper-making machine of the type employing felt webs for drying the formed paper I web, the machine providing a drying action of the paper' web without requiring pressure on the felt Webs, requiring less heat to dry the'paper web than in machines of the prior art, improving the durability of the felt webs, providing improvedv and more eificient means for drying the felt webs than employed'in the prior art, reducing the amount of vibration involved, reducing the amount of slipping of the paper web as it is processed, preventing the crushing of the paper web,
providing an efficient preliminary drying of the paper web as it is fed to the collecting rolls, whereby less heat will be required to dry the paper web to its finallycompleted condition than in the prior art apparatus, and providing a stronger and-more uniform resultant paper prodconstructed in accordance with the present invention.
Referring to the drawings, Mdesignates a vat connected by conduit means, not shown, to a source of paper stock liquor. Rotatably mounted in vat 24 and connected to'a suitable driving motor is a paper web-forming roll 8 of conventional construction, which may comprise, for 'eX- ample, a cylindrical screen, as employed in the 'Fourdri'nier-t'ype of paper-making machine. ,The
vat 24 contains a block member 25 formed toex 'tend around the lower surface portion'of roll 8 and beingspaced therefrom to define a flow channel for paper stock' liquor from the left side'of the roll to the right side thereof, as viewed inthe figure. I The block 25 has an overflow edge at 26,
over which stock liquor may flow for recirculation in the vat. Recirculation is produced by a pump 21 disposed in a conduit 28 connecting the rightend portion of the vat to the left-end portion thereof, as shown. 7
The liquor carrying the paper stock passes through thescreened roll tywhereby the'stock forms on the surface of the roll. The roll rotates faster than the movement of the liquor below and through the roll, whereby the paper fibres are caused to lie flat against the face of the roll. The liquid passing through the cylinder 55 iiowsback to the circulation passage beneath the cylinder by gravity through openings inthe ends of the cylinder 8. As mentioned above, roll 8' is of standard construction.
Designated generally at 29 is a frame located adjacent the vat 24. Rotatably mounted on frame Q 29 above vat'24 are a plurality of web carrying rolls 4 to 6 which-are arranged in parallel spaced relation and are disposed in the same horizontal plane and connected to suitable driving means. Mounted on the rolls I to J and rolls 9 to I3 is a felt Web 33. The tension of endless web 33 may be regulated by means of handwheel 32. It will be noted that web33 passes alternately over and under the rolls I- to 8, over roll l3, around roll I2, over roll I I, under roll II), over roll 9 and around couch roll I, said web being driven in the direction indicated by the arrow above couch roll.I

Roll I6 is a second additional web carrying roll and is disposed above the roll 3. Roll I4 is a third additional web carrying roll positioned between rolls 4 and and is movable vertically toward and away from the roll I3, the roll I4 being mounted on a vertically adjustable bracket 31 whose position may be varied by a screw 38 operated by a handwheel 39. Designated at 40 is a second endless felt web extending alternately under and over the rolls 2 to 6, around roll I4, under roll I5 and over roll l6. Rolls M to IE are driven, by means not shown, synchronously with rolls 2 to 6. The tension of web 40 may be adjusted by means of the handwheel 36.
Designated at I! is the paper-collecting roll, said roll being rotatably mounted on the rear end of frame 29 subadjacent roll I4. The position of roll I4 relative to roll I! may be adjusted by means of the handwheel 39.
Web 40 is driven in the direction indicated by the arrow above roll 2, whereby webs 33 and 43 travel in the same direction past the rolls 2 to 6.
Each of the rolls I to I, 9 to I3, I5 and I6 is provided with a pair of internal suction nozzles 4|, 4| connected to a suitable vacuum pump. The rolls are perforated and the suction nozzles act to draw moisture through the perforated surfaces of the rolls from the webs engaged thereon. Designated at I8 to 23 are respective sprinkler heads connected to a suitable water supply. First sprinkler head [8 is mounted above web All between rolls I4 and I5. Second sprinkler head I9 is mounted below web 33 between rolls 6 and I3. Third sprinkler head is mounted below web 33 between rolls I2 and I3. Fourth sprinkler head 2| is mounted below web 33 between rolls I I and I2. Fifth sprinkler head 22 is mounted above web 33 between rolls IE1 and II. Sixth sprinkler head 23 is mounted below web 33 between rolls 9 and I0.
In operation, the paper web formed on roll 8 is picked up by the felt web 33 by the vacuum of couch roll 1 and is carried over roll I and thence between the felt webs 33 and 43 past rolls 2 to 8. The suction nozzles in couch roll l remove a substantial amount of water from' the paper web. The suction nozzles in the rolls I to '6 also remove water from the paper web whereby the web is continuously dried as it passes the rolls I to 6.
As the paper web passes roll 6, it travels with felt web 40 toward the roll I4 and engages on the collecting roll [1, which removes the paper web for further drying.
The upper felt web 43 then passes around roll I4 and is washed by the sprinkler head I8.
The lower felt web 33 is first washed from below bysprinkler head I9. Moisture is then removed from felt web 33 by relatively low vacuum suction in roller I3. The face of web 33 is then further washed by sprinkler 2H and moistureis removed from the web by relatively high vacuum in roll I2. The felt web 33 is then again washed by sprinkler 2I and moisture is then removed from from the web byv high vacuum in roll 9.
The above cycles of washing and vacuum completely loosen and remove all the dirt and loose particles from the felt webs without mechani 4 cally damaging the webs or causing undue wear thereon.
The machine operates without vibration and without compressing or excessively squeezing the paper web as it passes between the felt webs and 33. The felt webs will be kept clean, so that water will not be pulled through dirt or filth, and the felts will not become clogged, since all loose material will be removed therefrom by the abovedescribed cycles of washing and vacuum cleaning.
Since the water is removed from the paper web without appreciable squeezing pressure, the felt webs will not be subject to excessive wear and will be easy to keep clean. Furthermore, particles of hard material passing between the felt webs will not damage the webs to any serious extent.
While a specific embodiment of a paper-making machine has been disclosed in the foregoing description, it will be understood that various modifications within the spirit of the invention may occur to those skilled in the art. Therefore, it is intended that no limitations be placed on the invention except as defined by the scope of the appended claims.
What is claimed is:
l. A paper-making machine comprising a vat, means circulating paper stock liquor-through said vat, a horizontally disposed perforated web forming roll rotatably mounted within said vat, a perforated horizontally disposed rotary couch roll positioned adjacent the upper peripheral portion of said web forming roll, a plurality of perforated web carrying rotary rolls arranged in parallel spaced relation positioned in a horizontal plane spaced above said couch roll, a first horizontally disposed guiding rotary perforated roll positioned above and rearwardly of said perforated web forming roll, second and third horizontally disposed rotary perforated guiding rolls spaced from each other positioned below and spaced from said plurality of web carrying rolls and rearwardly of and spaced from said first guiding roll, a first horizontally disposed additional web carrying rotary perforated roll positioned rearwardly of and spaced from said plurality'of web carrying rolls and in substantially the'same horizontal plane in which the latter named rolls are disposed, a first horizontally disposed stretching rotary roll positioned between and spaced from said plurality of web carrying'rolls and said second and third guiding rolls, a first endless felt web engaged over said couch roll and alternately over and under successive ones of said plurality of web carrying rolls and engaged respectively over said first additional web carrying roll, said first stretching roll, said second and third guiding rolls and said first guiding roll, a second horizontally disposed additional web carrying rotary perforated roll disposed above and spaced from said plurality of web carrying rolls and inwardly of said first guiding roll, a third horizontally disposed additional web carrying roll positioned above and spaced from said first additional web P carrying roll, a second horizontally disposed stretching rotary perforated roll positioned between and spaced from said plurality of web carrying rolls and said second and third additional web carrying rolls, a second endless felt web engaged over said second and third additional web carrying rolls and said second stretching roll and alternately over and undersuccessive ones of said plurality of web carrying rolls, a rotary paper collecting roll positioned below and adjacent to said third additional web carryingroll, suction nozzles in said couch roll, in each of said plurality of web carrying rolls,'in each of said first, second and third guiding rolls, in each of said first and second stretching rolls, and in each of said first and second additional web carrying rolls, a first sprinkler head positioned above said second felt web between said second and third additional web carrying rolls, a second sprinkler head positioned below said first felt web between said first additional web carrying roll and the adjacent one of said plurality of web carrying rolls, a third sprinkler head positioned below said first felt web between said first additional web carrying roll and said first stretching roll, a fourth sprinkler head positioned below said first felt web between said first stretching roll and said third guiding roll, a fifth sprinkler head positioned above said first felt web between said third and second guiding rolls, and a sixth sprinkler head positioned below said first felt web between said second and first guiding rolls;

A papermaking machine comprising a vat, means circulating paper stock liquor through said vat, a horizontally disposed perforated web forming roll rotatably mounted within said vat, a perforated horizontally disposed rotary couch roll positioned adjacent the upper peripheral portion of said web forming roll, a plurality of perforated web carrying rotary rolls arranged in parallel spaced relation positioned in a horizontal plane spaced above said couch roll, a first horizontally disposed guiding rotary perforated roll positioned above and rearwardly of said perforated lweb forming roll, second and third horizontally disposed rotary perforated guiding rolls spaced from each other positioned below and spaced from said plurality of web carrying rolls and rearwardly of and spaced from said first guiding P011, 8 r izontally disposed additional web carrying rotary perforated roll positioned rearwardly of and spaced from said plurality of web carrying rolls and in substantially the same horizontal plane in which the latter named rolls are disposed, a first horizontally disposed stretching rotary roll positioned between and spaced from said plurality of web carrying rolls and said second and third guiding rolls and movable toward and away from said perforated web forming roll, a first endless felt web engaged over said couch roll and alternately over and under successive ones of said plurality of web carrying rolls and engaged respectively over said first additional web carrying roll said first stretching roll said second and third guiding rolls and said first guiding roll, a second horizontally disposed additional web carrying rotary perforated roll disposed above and spaced from said plurality of web carrying rolls and inwardly of said first guiding roll, a third horizontally disposed additional web carrying roll positioned above and spaced from said first additional web carrying roll and movable vertically toward and away from said first additional web carrying roll, a second horizontally disposed stretching'rotary perforated roll positioned between and spaced from said plurality of web carrying rolls and said second and third additional web carrying rolls and movable vertically toward and away from said plurality of web carrying rolls, a second endless felt web engaged over said second and third additional web carrying rolls and said second stretching roll and alternately over and under successive ones of said plurality of web carrying rolls, a rotary paper collecting roll positioned below and adjacent to said third additional web carrying roll, suction nozzles in said couch roll, in each of said plurality of web carrying rolls, in each of said first second and third guiding rolls, in each of said first and second stretching rolls, and in each of said first and second additional web carrying rolls, a first sprinkler head positioned above said second felt web between said second and third additional web carrying rolls, a second sprinkler head positioned below said first felt web between said first additional web carrying roll and the adjacent one of said plurality of web carrying rolls, [a third sprinkler head positioned below said first felt web between said first additional web carrying roll and said first stretching roll, a fourth sprinkler head positioned below said first felt web between said first stretching roll and said third guiding roll, a fifth sprinkler head positioned above said first felt web between said third and second guiding rolls, and a sixth sprinkler head positioned below said first felt web between said second and first guiding rolls.
