FRUIT-JAR.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 259,862, dated June 20, 1882. Application filed April 4, 1882. (No model.)

Be it known that I, JOHNSTON IRVIN, of Elk City, Clarion county, State of Pennsyl- Vania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Fruit-Jars; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved fruit-jar with a portion of the top and bottom broken off, and partly in section. Fig. 2 is a detail view, in section, of the parts separated.

The main object of this invention is to provide such a construction of parts as will insure the perfect sealing of thejar; and it consists mainly in the combination, with a jarmouth of peculiar form of an elastic packingring of special form and proper mechanism for uniting the packing-ring to the jar.

It consists, further, in certain specific details of construction which, in connection with the foregoing, will be fully hereinafter described.

In the drawings, A represents a fruit-jar, which may be of any proper construction, but which is preferably made with a projecting rib, a, upon the bottom, and with inclined or tapering sides a, as shown.

a represents the lower shoulder of thejar, and a a cylindrical portion above the shoulder, provided with the usual screw-threads, as shown.

a represents the upper shoulder, and a the upper edge of the jar, which is made wedgeshaped, as shown. 1

B represents the cover of the jar, which is provided with an annular recess. b, of wedge form, as shown, surrounding thehub b of the cover. The hub b is in the form of a frustum of a cone with its larger end or base resting on the cover.

0 represents a packing-ring, made of rubher or any other proper elastic material, which is provided with the wedge shaped groove 0, as shown. This groove, it will be observed, exceeds in depth the height of the wedgeshaped portion a upon the upper edge of the jar, the purpose of this construction being to prevent the sharp edge of the jar from touch ing the inside portion of the groove. The ring 0 is provided with inclined sides and a square top, as shown. The annular recess in the cover of the jar is made to correspond with the form of the ring O, whatever it may be.

D represents a cap, of any proper construction, which is provided with screw-threads adapted to engage with the screw-threads of the jar in the usual well-known manner.

The manner of using my improved jar is substantially as follows: The packing-ring is first inserted in the'annular recess b of the cover B, as shown. The jar then being filled with fruit, the cover is placed in position upon the mouth of the jar, its wedge-shaped groove engaging with the wedge-shaped projection upon the" same. The cap D now being screwed into place, the elastic packingring 0 is thereby pressed upon the jar-mouth, the conical hub b of the cover, by reason of its inclined sides, forcing the packing-ring radially outward in the groove 1) of the cover in such manner as to absolutely prevent the entrance of air. The jar being thus hermetically sealed, the fruit contained therein is protected against decay.

By means of the rim on the bottom of the jar a protection is afforded against breakage number of them may be packed with greater safety than when the jars are perfectly cylindrical.
