VHEAD BLOCK.

HEAD-BLOCK.
SPECIFICATION formingpart of Letters Patent No. 259,551, dated June 13, 1882.
Application filed January 14, 1882.
To all whom it may concern,.-
Be it known that I, CONRAD KESTER, of Weston, in the county of Lewis and State of West Virginia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Head-Blocks for Bull- Saws; andI do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form part of this specification, in which- Figure l is a perspective view; Fig. 2, a central longitudinal section of the head-block, and Fig. 3 a face view of the same.
rEhe object I have in view is to provide means whereby the operator may saw timber at any angle desired; and my invention consists in the employment of alnovable center,
and also in the combination therewith of such other devices as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
To enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make and use the same, I will now proceed to describe its construction and operation.
A designates the saw-bed, on which is suitably mounted a circular saw, and on which is applied to reciprocate between guideways a carriage, B, provided with means for centering the log and adjusting the same to the saw.
C indicates the head-block, provided with a transverse' dovetail groove or recess, in which slides the bar a. This bar is formed or constructed with projection b, in the top of which is a hole. I
c represents a lever pivoted to the headblock at its center, which lever has a suitablev extension below its pivotal bearing, which enters the hole just referred to in the sliding bar a, thus enabling it to be easily shifted to the right or left, as occasion may require.
The headblock C is further provided with a central longitudinal slot, which extends in depth from the outer side of the block to the inner face of the dovetail groove.
d represents the head-peuter, which enters a screw-threaded hole inthe center of the slide (No model.)
a. The slot referred to should be of sufcient length to admit of the center d being shifted by means of the lever c, thus enabling the op- 5o erator to so adjust the log at its head as will determine the direction or angle of the cut and enable the log to be economically sawed.
The head-block C and the foot-block G are vertically adjustable by means of screws J J, passed through the horizontal cross-bars of the carriage-frame B and into the blocks C C', as shown in Fig. l. By these adjustments the log is fed down to the saw to cut any desired depth.
The operation of my invention is as follows: The log being properly centered, the lever c is moved to the right or left, as may be desired, which operates upon the slide a, thus adjusting the head-center, and hence the headof the log, to any required position which will enable the operator to cut his plank or slabs to the best advantage.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The combination of the vertically-adjustable head and foot blocks of the carriage B, the laterally-adj ustable bar a, applied to the head-block C, the adjustable log centering and holding device d, passing freely through the head-block and tapped through the bar a, the extension b on this bar, provided with a notch, and the lever c for adjusting the bar endwise, substantially as described.
2. The combination of the saw mounted on a stationary bed, the rectilinear reciprocating carriage on this bed, the vertically-adj ustable head and foot blocks, the adjustable head-cen ter d, the laterally-adjustable bar a, and the lever c for adjusting this bar, substantially as described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I affix my signature in presenceof two witnesses.
CONRAD KESTER.
