(01, n es This invention relates to door holders, and the primary object is to provide a device of this character for the use of carpenters and other mechanics for holding a door in an open or partially open position while work is being performed upon the door, such as mortiging the same for the reception of a lock, or for the repairing of a lock, etc.
The device of this invention may be readily applied to, and removed from, the door; is easy to manipulate; is effective operation; is .of such a construction, combination and arrangement as to lend itself to mass production at low cost.
The invention together with its objects and advantages will be best understood by reading the following detailed description with reference to the accompanying drawing, wherein is illustrated a preferred embodiment of the invention, and in which:
Figure 1 is an elevational view of a door holder embodying the features of the present invention, andillustrating an application thereof; a door being shown fragmentarily and in side elevation;
Figure 2 is a top plan of the assembly shown in Figure 1.
Figure 3 is an elevational view of the door holder per se and taken substantially at right angles to Figure 1; and
Figure 4 is a perspective view of the doorengaging jaw forming part of the invention.
Referring now in detail to the drawings it will be seen that the improved door holder comprises, in general, a base frame 5 a door engaging jaw 6 pivoted to the base frame 5 to swing into and out of positive engagement with the bottom edge of the door 1, an operating screw 8 threadedly engaged with the jaw assembly 6 for moving the latter into and out of engagement with the door I, and a head member 9 adapted to straddle the door 1 andhaving a universal connection iii with the screw 8 so as to permit relative rotation of the latter for effecting movement of the jaw assembly 8 to the desired position of adjustment.
The base frame 5 is formed from a single length of metal or other suitable material bent into a substantial U and is adapted to rest vertically on the fioor H as shown to advantage in Figure l. The upstanding legs E2 of frame 5 accommodate therebetween the jaw and these legs have vertically spaced apertures l3 to accommodate a pivot bolt It through the medium of which the jaw assembly 5 is pivoted to the frame at a desired height with respect to the floor II or closed bottom end of frame 5.

This jaw assembly 6 includes a substantially horizontal jaw member t5, a substantially vertical part it, and opposed sides l --l "l integral with the jaw l5 and vertical part It, as shown to advantage in Figure 4.. The side members I! are suitably apertured as at' I8 to register with aligned apertures I3 and accommodate the pivot bolt It. Jaw I5 also has formed integrally therewith an upstanding tooth I9 to positively engage the lower edge of the door 1 as shown in Figure l.
For the jaw assembly 6 there is provided the aforementioned operating screw 8. This screw has a threaded shank portion that threads through a threaded boss 20 provided on the vertical part It on the jaw assembly. The free end of the threaded portion of screw 8 is of ball shape and has a working fit in a slotted socket formed on a head member 9 to provide the aforementioned universal joint connection IB between the operating screw 8 and said head 9, as clearly shown in Figures 1 and 2.
The head member 5 is formed from a single length of metal or other suitable material and is bent into a substantial U so as to straddle the door 7 at the free vertical edge thereof as shown in Figures 1 and 2. The socket forming part of the universal connection l 0 may be formed either integrally with the head 5 in a single operation, or formed separately therefrom and secured to the head member at the closed end of the U in any suitable manner, as by being welded thereto.
,In using the door holder the door 1' is swung on its hinges to the position in which it is desired to hold it. The frame 5 is then placed on the floor II in close proximity to the free vertical edge of the door I with the lower free corner of the door being received within the jaw assembly (5, and the head 9 placed in straddling position on the free vertical edge portion of the door I. The operator then turns the operating screw 8 in a manner to cause the jaw assembly 6 to rock on its pivot 14 in a clockwise direction until the tooth edge It of jaw I5 is forced tightly against the lower edge of the door.
When it is desired to release the door, the operating screw 8 is turned in a reverse direction so as to cause the jaw assembly 6 to swing in a counterclockwise direction on its pivot It so that the tooth l9 swings downwardly away from the lower edge of the door 1. The door holder may now be readily removed.
A door holder embodying the features of this invention will be positive and eflicient in operation, and the use thereof will not result in marring, scratching or otherwise injuring either the door or the floor..
Although I have herein shown and describe a preferred embodiment of this invention, it is to be understood that various changes may be made therein within the scope of the claims hereto appended;
What is claimed as new is:
1. A door holder comprising a base member adapted to rest on the floor, a shell-like jaw as sembly pivotally mounted on said base member to receive the lower free corner of a door and embodyinga; substantially horizontal jaw member, a substantially vertical part, and opposed sides integral with said jaw member and vertical part, an operating screw threadedly engaged with the aforementioned vertical part of said jaw assembly and extending inthe general direction of the said 'horizontalw jaw member to impinge again'stthe .free vertical edge of the door for rocking Tithe horizontal jaw member into positive engagement with the lower horizontal edge of the door, and a pivot bolt intermediate the free edge of the said J horizontal jawmember and said operating screw pivotally connecting said jaw assembly with said base member. 2. A door holder comprising a substantially U-shape base frame, a jaw assembly comprising a shell-like member including a substantially horizontal jaw member, a substantially vertical part,
4 i and opposed sides integral with said substantially horizontal jaw member and vertical part, a pivot bolt extending transversely through said jaw as- 'sembly and engaged in apertures in opposed portions of said base frame and opposed sides of the jaw assembly 'pivotally connecting the latter with the base frame, an operating screw threadedly engaged with the aforementioned vertical part of the jaw assembly, a door engaging head swivelly mounted on one end of the screw, said substantially horizontal jaw member having a free edge portion provided with an upstanding door engaging tooth; said pivot bolt being disposed intermediate the door engaging tooth and operating screw, and said operating screw extending in the general direction of said horizontal jaw member.
