UNITED STATES PATENT Urrice.
\VILLIAM A. HORRALL, OF WASHINGTON, INDIANA.
BED-SPRING.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 259,395, dated June 13, 1882.
Application filed May 13, 1882.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM A. HORRALL, of IVashington, in the county of Daviess and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bed-Springs; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to bed;springs, and has for its object to connect the springs in a simple, durable, inexpensive, and efficient manner, that will not in any way out or injure the bedding, and will afford an increased supportin g-surface. To these ends it consists in certain improvements in the construction and arrangement of parts.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a top view of a twin spring formed with my improved connection and attached to the cross-slat. Fig. 2 is an end view of the same. Fig. 3 is a vertical sectional View. Fig. 4 is a side view illustrating a modification.
Referring by letter to the drawings, A designates an upright coiled spring continued over at its top to form a coil, B, thence over to form an adjoining coil, 0, from whence it is continued diagonally across, as at D, to form corresponding adjoining coils, E F, and over to form another upright coiled spring, G. A connection is thus form ed, comprisingfour coils arranged to form a rectangular supportingsurface between the upright springs.
At their lower ends the springs A and G rest in the usual manner on a cross-slat, H, and are provided with shanks or tan gs I, hooking under the slat. The latter is provided on (No model.)
its under side with a metallic plate or facing, 0
J, which prevents any damage to the same by the rubbing or sliding motion of the tangs as the springs are depressed, as shown in Fig. at of the drawings. The metallic facing may of course be placed on top the slat, or on both top and bottom with like effect.
In the modification shown in Fig. 4. the coils B O and E F, instead of being a single coil, are formed with several, as shown, for purposes of greater elasticity.
I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent-- '1. A connection for bed-springs, comprising four coils arranged to form a rectangular supporting-surface between the springs, as set forth.
2. The herein-described connection for bedsprings, consisting in continuing the wire of one upright coil over to form a small coil, B, thence across to form an adjoining coil, 0, from whence it is continued diagonally across to form corresponding coils, E F, and over to form the next upright spring, as set forth, and for the purpose specified.
3. The cross-slat on which the springs are adapted to rest or be hooked under, provided on one or more of its surfaces with a metallic plate or facing adapted to prevent injury to the slat by movement of the spring, as set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto affixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
\VILLIAM A HORRALL.
