EXTENSIBLEi BOLSTER ROLL Filed March '15, 1949 IN V EN TORS Vecla M. Sq BY -\rmc1 C.P ant Patented Apr. 15, 1952 EXTENSIBLE BOLSTER ROLL Veda M. Sage, Panama City, Fla., and Irma 0. Plant, Arlington Heights, Ill.
Application March 15, 1949, Serial No. 81,444
2 Claims.
Our invention relates to bolster rolls which are adapted to be covered with bedspread material, which includes means for storing a pair of bed pillows therein, and which are adapted to permit the rolling of the bedspread thereon when it is desired to remove the spread from the bed.
With the foregoing in view, it is an object of our invention to provide an improved extensible bolster roll..
' A further object is to provide an improved extensible bolster roll wherein a pair of similar extensions are telescopically slidable into and out of the open ends of a body portion of cylindrical configuration, and wherein each of the extensions and body is provided with a longitudinally-extending radially-directed access opening to permit the storing of a bed pillow therein.
Other objectsand advantages reside in the particular structure of the invention, combination and arrangement of the several parts thereof, and will be readily understood by those skilled in the art upon reference to the attached drawing in connection with the following specification, wherein the invention is shown, described and claimed.
In the drawing:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of a bolster roll according to the invention, one of the extensions being omitted;
Figure 2 is a perspective view on an enlarged scale of one of the. extensions for the roll;
Figure 3 is an end elevation of the body portion of the roll looking from the right of Figure 1;
Figure 4 is a longitudinal vertical sectional view taken substantially on the plane of the line 44 of Figure 3;
Figure 5 is a transverse vertical sectional view taken substantially on the plane of the line 5-5 of Figure 1.
Referring specifically to the drawing, wherein like reference characters have been used throughout the several views to designate like parts, I0 designates generally a hollow open ended cylindrical body having an end ring ll disposed adjacent each of the open ends thereof and a disc I2 interposed between the rings II. The rings ll and/or the disc l2 are connected together by a cylindrical side wall [3 which may be reinforced by suitable longitudinal frame members 14. In the embodiment illustrated, the wall 13 does not extend entirely around the body portion, whereby to provide access openings IE on either side of the disc or ring l2 defined by the frame members l4. Also, the materialof the wall l3 includes free edges which are wrapped about the frame members 14. The body portion thus formed is intended to be covered with. any suitable ornamental textile material 30, Fig. 5, in a well known manner.
A pair of hollow cylindrical extensions l6 and I! are disposed within the open ends of the body in and mounted in the body In for extensile and contractile movement through the open ends thereof. Inasmuch as each of the exten-' sions is identical, it will suffice 'to describe but a single one of them; Thus, each extension l6 or I! has a closed outer end wall l8 and. includes a reinforcing ring 19 at the inner end. The reinforcing ring l9 and the adjacent end ring ll on the body portion 10 form interengaging means for limiting the extensile movement of the extensions. If desired, an additional reinforcing ring 20 may be disposed adjacent the ring IS. The outer surfaces of the end walls I8 are preferably padded and covered with ornamental textile material 3| which may correspond to the material 30 of the roll. Any suitable pulls 32 may be secured to the end walls l8 outwardly of the covering 3|. The rings l9 and 20 and the end walls l8 are connected together by any suitable cylindrical wall 2|. Moreover, it is preferred that all of the walls 2|, as well as the rings [9 and 20, have elongated access openings 22 formed therein to permit the insertion and removal of bed pillows into and from the interior of the extensions [6 and I1. ,Thus, the edges of cylindrical walls 2| seat behind the frame members M of the bolster roll whereby relative rotation of the exjacent end rings ll of the body Ill to provide means limiting outward sliding movement of the extensions. 7
In use, the extensions are fully telescoped inwardly. The pillows for the bed are stored in the roll body Ill. Moreover, one edge of the bedspead 33 is secured to frame member M detended to underlie those portions of the bedspread which depend from opposite sides of the main spread body. Thereafter, the bedspread is rolled up upon the extended bolster roll, whereby a neat roll is readily achieved.
While we have shown and described what is now thought to be the preferred embodiment of the invention, it is to be understood that the same is susceptible of other forms and expressions. Consequently, we do not limit ourselves to the precise structure shown and described hereinabove except as hereinafter claimed.
We claim:
1. An extensible bolster roll comprising a. hollow open ended cylindrical body having. anopening extending longitudinally from one end to the other end, a hollow cylindrical extension having one end open and the other end closed, said extension having its open end positioned within said body adjacent one of the open ends thereofand mounted in said body for extensile and contractile movement, said extension being. provided with an opening extending inwardl'y from a point spaced from the open end and terminating at its closed end, interengaging means on said extension adjacent the open end thereof and on said body adjacent said one end thereof for limiting the extensile movement of said extension, and. stop means on the inner face of the closed end of said extension and engageabl'ewith the open end of said body to limit the contractile. movement of said extension.
2. An extensible bolster roll comprising a hollow open ended cylindrical body having an opening extending longitudinally from one end to the other end, a hollow cylindrical extension having one end open and the other end closed, said extension having its open end positioned within said body adjacent one of the open ends thereof and mounted in said body for extensile and contractile movement, said extension being provided with. an opening extending inwardly from a point spaced from the open end and terminating at its closed end, interengaging means embodying a ring carried by said extension adjacent the other end thereof and engeageable with a ring fixedly secured to the inner face of said body adjacent said one end thereof for limiting the extensile movement of said extension, and stop means on the inner face of the closed end of said extension and engageable with the open end of said body to limit the contractile movement of said extension.
