STITCHLESS FLEXIBLE POCKET RECEPTACLE Filed Feb. 14, 1946 INVENTOR Doucms :IBRoaw/wn BY {L ATTOR N EYS Patented Apr. 15,1952
UNITED STATE STITCHLESS POCKET RECEPTACLE Douglas J. Broughton, Springfield, Mass, assignor to Buxton, Incorporated, Springfield, Mass., a corporationof Massachusetts Application February 14, 1946, Serial No. 647,523
1 Claim. 1
This invention relates to animprovement in billfolds and more particularly to an end closure for the type of billfold having a transparent walled pocket forthedisplay of an identification card, pass card or the like, and in which the billfold elements are held in place without the use of stitches.
The principal object of the invention is to provide an end closure construction by which improved fiexibility is secured at the same time that the entire surface of the panels at the sides of the center fold line are made available for structural features such as a transparent window.
Other objects of the invention, and advantages, resulting from the details of the novel construction will be made apparent from the following specification and claim.
Fig. 1 is plan view of a blank from which a billfold embodying the invention may be folded p;
Fig. 2 is a plan view of the blank of Fig. 1 with the panel and certain of the flap members folded into place;
Fig. 3 is a view of the structure of Fig. 2 with the folding operations completed;
Fig. 4 is a sectional view substantially on line 4-4 of Fig. 3;
Fig. 5 is a view showing one end section of the billfold folded on the other; and
Fig. 6 is a view similar to Fig. 5 but showing a modified construction.
Referring to the drawings the blank is shown as comprising a rear wall member I, end panel members 2 and 3 spaced from each other and each extending from the lower edge of the rear wall, and flap members 4 and 5 extending from the edges of panel members 2 and 3, respectively, opposite those edges of the latter which are attached to the rear wall. An end closing flap 6 extends from that end of the rear wall adjacent panel member 3.
Panel member 2 is provided with an end closure flap 1 extending from the outer end edge of the latter, the flap 1 terminating in a reduced tongue portion 8. Flap members 4 and 5 are provided at their outer end edges with tongues 9 and II) respectively. As shown the upper edge of the rear wall member I and the portion of the lower edge of said member between the panel members are respectively provided with extending portions H and 12 which are folded over and cemented to the inner face of the rear wall in the usual manner to "finish" the exposed edge of the rear wall.
Panel member 2 is cut out as at 13 to provide anopen window frame. While the blank is in the form shown in Fig. 1 a piece of suitable transparent material [4 may be cemented or otherwise secured over the opening l3. r
The positioningand application of the transparent member 14 is greatly facilitated since by the present construction it may be applied to the flat blank in advance of any folding operations which is not possible with present constructions which avoid the use of stitching. i
In folding up the billfold flap members 4 and 5 are respectively folded onto the adjacent panels 2 and 3 as shown in dotted lines in Fig. 1. The panels 2 and 3 are then folded onto the rear wall I as shown in Fig. 2 thus positioning the flap members 4 and 5 between the panel members and the rear wall. The end closure flap 1 and tongue are then folded rearwardly around the end of the billfold and onto the rear face of the rear wall I, as shown in Figs. 3 and 5.
Preferably, as best shown in Fig. 1 the end of the rear wall adjacent flap 1 is cut away as indicated at 15 to a depth approximately equal to the thickness of the leather of flap I. The center portion of the so cut away end of wall l is further recessed as at It to a depth substantially equal to the thickness'of the leather of tongue 9. When the flap 1 and tongue 9 are folded around the end of wall! as above described they fit into the recesses I5 and I6 respectively providing a smooth edge at the end of the billfold. The tongue portion 8 of flap 1 is inserted in a slot I! formed in the rear wall I. The tongue 8 may be cemented to wall I inwardly of the slot I! or interlocked in the slot in any usual manner. Preferably the tongue portion 8 is additionally secured to the rear wall by a rivet I8 having a head in the form of an ornamental escutcheon plate I!) which may, if desired, be engraved with the initials of the owner or with any other markmg.
At the other end of the billfold tongue I0 is folded over onto the outer face of panel 3, as shown in Fig. 2, and cemented thereto if desired. Flap 6 is folded inwardly onto panel 3' as shown in Fig. 3, covering the inturned tongue Hi.
The flap 5 may be interlocked to panel 3 in any suitable manner. f As shown the free end of flap 5 is provided with a flexible plate 20 of thin plastic sheeting. Plate 20 is cemented or otherwise secured to an edge portion 2| of the flap 6. Plate 20 and the attached edge portion 2| are inserted through a, slot 22, formed in panel 3, to extend toward the adjacent end of the billfold as shown in dotted line in Fig. 3.
At any suitable stage of the various folding operations above described an intermediate member 23 of conventional form and having projections 24 formed along its upper edge adjacent its ends, is inserted between the flaps 4 and 5 and their adjacent panel members, the projections 21 being inserted'throughsl'ot 25 formed in flapsland 5 in a known manner.-
When as is frequently desired one end of the billfold is provided with a closure strap 26, Fig. -6,
the escutcheon plate l9 may be replaced by a rivet in the form of one member 21 of'a' snap fastener, the other member 28 of the fastener be:
ing carried by the closure strap 26;
I claim:
In a billfold having a rear wall and a panel 1 member extending from the-lower edge of said I rear wall and'folded onto the inner face of the rear wall, an end closure flap extending from the end of said panel member which is adjacent the ='end of the billfolda flap memberextending from 'thatfedge of'the panel member which is opposite theedge along which the panel'member is attached to the rear wall and being folded clownwardly between the panel member and the rear wall, said flap member-having atong-ue extending from the end thereof which is adjacent the end of the billfold said tongue being of lessextent than said end closure flap, said last-named flap and said tongue being folded around the end on-the billfold :and onto the outer face ofthe rear wall; said tongue being positioned between the end closure flap and the rear wall with its free end positioned short of the free end of the end closure flap and means securing that portion of the end closure flap lying beyond the free end of said tongue, to the rear wall of the billfold.
' said means comprising a narrow straight sided tongue extending from the'free -end of the 010- sure flap and through a single slot formed in the rear wall and rivet means positioned beyond said --slot and rigidly securing said straight sided I tongue tothe inner face of the rear wall.
