2 Claims. (Cl. 11345) structed and arranged whereby one component is actuated by another so that, with the apparatus associated with the relatively movable parts of a press, a piece of work is blanked, drawn and formed during a cycle of operation of the .press.
With the foregoing and various other novel features and advantages and other objects of my invention as will become more apparent as. the description proceeds, the invention consists in certain novel features of construction and in the combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter more particularly pointed out in the claims hereunto annexed and more fully described and referred to in connection with the accompanying drawings wherein:
The figure is a sectional elevational view through die apparatus embodying the novel features of the invention.
Referring now to the drawings more in detail, the invention will be fully described.
A supporting means or press bolster is represented by 2 and a punch holder is represented by 4 which. has a shank 6 for securing to the ram of a press. With the member 4 secured to the ram, the punch holder 4 is moved up and down toward and away from the bolster 2 so that the die construction performs a blanking, drawing and forming operation as may be desired.
A lower die set member 8 is secured to the upper side of the bolster by any suitable means. Such securing means may be bolts, in fact whereever parts of the structure are secured together, bolts or screws will suffice.
An upper plate H1 is provided beneath the bolster with a tubular member [2 therebelow and a lower plate M at the lower end of the member l2. Bolts [6 extend through the plate I4, member l2, and plate l and threadedly engage the bolster 2 for securing the parts to the bolster.
The member I2 is provided with a bore ill in which a hollow primary piston is reciprocable up and down. Said piston is provided with a bore 2|.
A packing 22 is secured to the lower end of member 20 by means of a clamp ring 24 and screws, not shown.
A packing 26 is provided on the plate l4 within bore l8 and is held in place by a ring 28 and screws, not shown.
A secondary piston includes upper and lower portions 30 and 32. These are secured together by a central bolt 34 having a head 36 in a bore 38 of the upper portion 30 and a lower end threadedly engaging the lower portion 32, as shown. Dowels 40 prevent relative rotation of the piston parts.
The members 2 and 8 are provided with a bore for reciprocation of the secondary piston up and down therein. Said piston is also reciprocable in bore 2| of member 20.
A shaft 42 is provided which is reciprocable up and down in a bushing 44 of plate l4. Said shaft is provided with a flange 46 and has a threaded upper end 46 engaging piston part 32. A packing 48 is clamped to the lower end of piston part 32 by said flange 46.
A lock bolt 50 has an upper end 52 threadedly engaging a bore 54 of piston member 32 with its lower end bearing on the upper end of shaft end 46' to lock the shaft to the said piston part 32.
A packing 56 around the shaft 42 is clamped to plate [4 by a ring 58 with screws not shown holding the ring in place.
A spring 60 is disposed around the lower end of shaft 42 between spring seats 62 and 64 which urges the shaft and secondary piston downwardly.
A plug 66 threadedly engages the bore 38 for closing the same and said plug, the bolts 34 and 5B and the shaft 42 are provided with passageways such as 68 therethrough to provide an air vent for the escape of air above the secondary piston. An outer ring-like blanking member 10 is secured to the member 8 and an inner ringlike blanking member 12 is reciprocable up and down between said member 12 and the upper portion 30 of the secondary piston.
A ring-like draw member 14 is secured to the member 4 and a stripper I6 is reciprocable up and down around the member 14. Springs 18 Hoetween the member 16 and punch holder 4 urge said stripper downwardly.
A hold down 82 is provided with a stem 84. The former is reciprocable in a bore 86 of member 14 and the stem is reciprocable in shank 6.
The construction shown and described is for producing a disc shaped work piece and for that purpose the parts are circular or ring like. The operation will now be described.
The bore 2| is filled with liquid such as oil and with the member 4 in upper position the spring 69 moves the secondary piston downwardly so that its upper end face is in the plane of the upper face of member 19.
With the piston in lower position the liquid displaced thereby acts on piston 20 so that through push rods 88 the member 12 is moved upwardly so that its upper face is in the plane of the upper faces of the secondary piston and member 79.
A piece of sheet stock is laid on the upper faces of the piston and members 10 and 12 by any suitable means.
As the upper member 4 moves downwardly the stock is clamped between the members 18 and I0 and between members it and 12 for the piercing and blanking of the stock.
The peripheral edge 72' of member '12 cooperates with edge l'B' of member 70 for the blanking operation so that the blank is formed.
With the marginal edges of the work W clamped between members 14 and i2 and as the member 4 continues downwardly the primary piston is moved downwardly through rods 88. This piston displaces liquid which acts on the secondary piston to move it upwardly.
As the secondary piston moves upwardly it cooperates with the member 14 to draw and form the work to the shape shown.
The member 82 bears on the work and cooperates with the plug 66 to prevent wrinkling of the work. The parts are shown in the lowermost position of member 4 with the work blanked, drawn and formed.
As the member 4 moves to upper position the spring 60 moves the shaft and secondary piston downwardly so that through the displacement of fluid by this piston the piston 20 and rods move the member '12 upwardly thereby lifting work W from the upper end of the secondary piston.
In the upper position of member 4 the primary piston, members 10 and 72 have their upper surfaces in substantially the same plane and the member 16 is disposed above member 10 so that the part W and the work W may be removed.
Fluid such as oil may be inserted in the bores through a passageway such as 90 which may be closed by a plug 92.
The invention may be embodied in other specific forms without departing from the essential characteristics thereof. Hence, the present embodiments are therefore to be considered in all respects merely as being illustrative and not as being restrictive, the scope of the invention being indicated by the appended claims rather than by the foregoing description, and all modifications and variations as fall within the meaning and purview and range of equivalency of the appended claims are therefore intended to be embraced therein.
What it is desired to claim and secure by Letters Patent of the United States is:

1. The combination with an upper punch holder reciprocable vertically towards and away from a press bolster of die mechanism comprising, a lower die set member secured to the upper side of the bolster and a lower member secured to the underside of said bolster, a draw member secured to the underside of said punch holder, said draw member and bolster and lower die set member provided with vertically disposed and aligned secondary bores and said lower member provided with a primary bore in alignment therewith of greater diameter than that of said firstnamed bores, closure means closing the lower end of the primary bore of the lower member, a primary piston reciprocable up and down in said lower member having a secondary bore in alignment with the first-named bores, a secondary piston reciprocable up and down in the secondary bores, a piston rod projecting from said secondary piston downwardly through said closure and spring means acting on said rod to resist upward movements of said rod and piston, an outer blanking member fixed to the upper side of said lower die set member having a bore spaced outwardly from said secondary piston, an annular inner blanking member between said secondary piston and bore of the outer blanking member and below said draw member reciprocable up and down relative thereto, and push rods reciprocable up and down in the press bolster and lower die set member having upper and lower ends for abutment by the lower side of the inner blanking member and upper side of the primary piston, all adapted and arranged whereby as the punch holder is moved downwardly towards the lower die set member said draw member moves said inner blanking member downwardly to act on said push rods and move the primary piston downwardly for displacing fiuid in the primary bore to act on and move the secondary piston upwardly against the action of said spring means.
2. Die mechanism of claim 1 including a hold-down reciprocable in the secondary bore of the draw member above said secondary piston.
