March 11, 1952 SCHWARTZ FABRIC GUIDE FOR SEWING MACHINES Filed Nov. 7, 1947 IN VEN TOR. zip JZV/WAET'Z Patented Mar. 11, 1952 FABRIC GUIDE FOR- SEWING MACHINES Leo Schwartz, New York, N. Y., assignor to Automatic Sewing Equipment 00., Inc., New York, N. Y., a corporation of New York Application November 7, 1947, Serial No. 784,536
7 Claims.
1 The present invention is directed to fabric guide structures for sewing machines, more particularly to a guide for mounting ruflling folders thereon.
In the prior art, there have been a number of ing head and the operator. Such a positioning of the device allowed ready access thereto by the operator. However, it obscured and interfered with access to the sewing elements themselves and rendered it difficult for the operator to change needles, thread the same and make other adjustments on the sewing head. Also the positioning of the fabric guide did not permit the operator to view the sewing operation and often times the sewing was performed in an unsatisfactory and defective manner because of such lack of visibility.
The present invention is intended and adapted to overcome the difficulties and disadvantages inherent in structures of this kind, it being among the objects of the present invention to provide a fabric guide for a milling machine, which is mounted on the bed of the sewing machine and is readily accessible, for adjustment purposes, to the operator.
It is also among the objects of the present invention to provide a fabric guide made up of a number of parts which are assembled in such a manner as to allow adjustment of position of the ruffiing folder or other fabric guide to meet the desired conditions of sewing.
It is still further among the objects of the present invention to provide a fabric guide which does not interfere with the visibility to the operator of the stitching mechanism and allows the operator to have ready access thereto.
In accordance with the present invention, there is provided a fabric guide having a base member which is in the form of a plate of a suitable form bent angularly so that there is a vertical portion 2 adjustably secured to the guide holder with means being provided for transverse adjustment thereof.
In the accompanying drawing constituting a part hereof and in which like reference characters indicate like parts,
Fig. 1 is a perspective view of the fabric guide of the present invention, the parts being shown disassembled but in their approximate relative positions;
Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the guide of the present invention shown in assembled form and mounted on a sewing machine bed, and
Fig. 3 is a perspective view showing the guide in relation to the needle, presser foot and fabric.
With reference to the drawing, the base member consists of a vertical plate I having a series of threaded openings 2 therein. A horizontal portion 3 has at its left side a longitudinal slot 4. The base is mounted on the bed 5 of the sewing machine by means of screws 6 passing through slot 4 and into threaded openings in bed 5.
An angular member having a vertical portion l is provided with vertical slots 8 therein. Said slots are adapted to register with threaded openings 2 and screws 9 passing through slots 8 and threaded into openings 2 whereby the angular member may be held for vertical adjustment with relation to the base. Vertical portion 1 is provided with a pair of threaded openings ID for a purpose to be later described. Said angular member is provided with a horizontal portion I I integral with portion 1 and having an extension I 2 at the left thereof. A flat guide plate I3 connected by sloping portion 13 to a flat guide plate base is held onto portion 1 by screws l4 passing through openings IS in said guide plate base and threaded into openings l6. Said guide plate l3 extends from below ruffling folder 24 towards the needle of the sewing machine; the ruflled fabric from said folder passes over said plate on the way to the needle.
. having a horizontal slot I8 therein adapted to be and a horizontal portion. Means are provided aligned with threaded openings Ill. Screws l9 passing through slot l8 and into openings l0 hold the guide plate in relative adjustable position to the angular member. A horizontal portion 20 integral with vertical portion IT has an extension 2| on the left portion thereof. A slot 22 transverse to slot I8 is provided in portion 2| and screws 23 are adapted to pass through said slot 22. The heads of said screws rest in a recess on the underside of 2!. A ruffling folder 24 having a base 25 is mounted on portion 2|, the screws 23 7 3 entering into threaded openings 25' in said base. Said folder 24 is thus positioned in front of the needle and presser foot of the sewing machine, to the left of guide holder 20, and above the base of plate l3.
In the operation of the device, it is a simple matter to fix base I onto the bed of the sewing machine as slot 4 is readily accessible from above for the adjustment of screw 6. This will be seen from the showing in Fig. 2.
The adjustment of the angular member is readily obtained by loosening screws 9 and adjusting the height thereof as desired. The guide holder may be adjusted laterally by loosening screws I9 and after adjustment, tightening the same.
The device consisting of the three angular members is relatively small and compact and partly resting on the bed of the machine and to one side from the sewing elements of the head of the machine. Therefore there is no interference in the activity of the operator in the visib ity and the adjustment of the sewing oper- The height of the device is relatively low so that wide fabrics may pass over the same without interference and into the needle of the machine. The parts are readily accessible for adjustment, replacement or insertion of various guide elements.
Although the invention has been described setting forth the single specific embodiment thereof, the invention is not limited to the details shown and described. For instance, the adjustments of the guide folder and angular member may be the reverse of that shown and the guide holder may be vertically adjusted while the angular member may be horizontaly adjusted. In addition, provision may be made for both horizontal and vertical adjustments of either or both of the guide holder and angular member. Similarly the base may be made with provision for lateral or tansverse adjustments. The exact positioning of the several slots and the number of screws passing through slots may be varied as desired. Also the exact form of the several elements need not be as shown but numerous variations therein may be made as is understood by those skilled in the art. The materials of construction may be any of those normally suitable machine bed and a vertical portion extending downwardly therefrom below the top of said bed, an angular member having a vertical portion secured to the vertical portion of said base and a horizontal portion having an extension terminating adjacent to the needle of said machine, a guide holder having a vertical portion secured to the vertical portion of said angular member and a horizontal portion overlaying said extension, and a fabric guide on said overlaying portion in front of and adjacent to said needle.
