The invention relates to printing devices for use in connection with business machines and, more particularly, for printing characters such as number indications of a counting mechanism.
In a known printing device or" this type the wiping device is moved in the main radially relative to the striking device. Consequently the difference between the smallest and the largest range of the striking device is equal to the greatest distance over which the typebearer can be moved.
Apart from the great range of the striking device, moreover, the drawback originates that the wiping device by its movement radially relative to the striking device, which movement takes place in the shifting direction or" the typebearcr, requires a large construction length.
The invention tries to eliminate these drawbacks and to provide a material reduction of the structure in the shifting direction of the typebearer. This is mainly obtained because strokes of the striking device that belong to the separate figure values have been provided at angular distances of various magnitude, each of which stroke co-operates with one of a number of stages of the wiping device. The construction according 'to the invention has the advantage that the movement of the wiping device, the way length of which of course is also determined by the greatest shift of the typebearer, is effected not radially but tangentially, respectively, in the direction of a cord relative to the centre of the striking device. So the wiping device can be lifted, respectively shifted into the centre line of the counting device or even higher.
The drawing shows an embodiment of the invention. Fig. 1 shows the printing device in the normal position. Figs. 2-10 represent the wiping device and the striking device in the positions appropriate to the separate figure values.
The type carrier I, slidably mounted in stationary guides 2, can be shifted in vertical direction and carries a stepped plate 3 equipped with six steps. The typecarrier l during the first part of each operation is released'for its upward shift by some known driving mechanism, which returns the typecarrier to its normal position during the second part of its operation. The upward movement of the typecarrier I can e. gbe effected by a spring, which may be attached to a cam associated with the stepped plate 3; The plate 3 co-operates with a control member 4, which is connected to a counter wheel (not shown in the drawing) of the counting device. Further the counting wheel is connected to a locking or ratchet wheel 6 having co-operating therewith a pawl I. The control member 4 has nine outwardly extending teeth whose radial .distance from the axis of rotation of the member 4 varies while the teeth are placed relative to each other at different angular distances. These teeth are provided in the drawings with the figures 0,1 to 8, while the individual steps of plate 3 are designated with the same numerals in such a manner that each individual step carries the number or numbers of the tooth or teeth of member 4 with which the respective step co-operates. Thus, for example, the uppermost step of plate 3 carries the numbers 1, 2 and 3 because this step co-operates with teeth 1, 2 and 3 of member 4. Finally a stationary abutment ID has been provided against which the plate 3 abuts when the type carrier l is positioned corresponding to the figure value 9.
The method of operation of the described printing device will be obvious from the drawing. It may be observed that the sides of the various teeth of the control member 4 may be so shaped that in co-operation with the stages of the plate 3 the movement of the control member 4 will be limited automatically and the pawl l and the pawl 6 may optionally be omitted. In the represented embodiment such an automatic limitation e. g. originates for the figure values 0-8 as will appear from the figures.
What I claim is:
1. In combination with a counter carrying a plurality of individual characters forming elements of data to be recorded, a control member rotatably connected to said counter and provided with a plurality of teeth arranged one adjacent the other along a spiral-shaped curve around the axis of rotation of said control member, all of said teeth being arranged in one and the same plane and extending together over an angle of less than 360, and each of said teeth being co-ordinated with one of said characters and extending over an angle of less than 36, a plurality of printing elements corresponding in number to the number of said characters, reciprocable means-supporting said printing elements, means supported by said reciprocable means and comprising a plurality of steps for co-operation with said teeth, at least one of said steps being arranged for co-operation with a plurality of said teeth.
2. In combination with a counter carrying a plurality of individual characters forming elements of data to be recorded, a control member rotatably connected to said counter and provided with aplurality of teeth arranged along a spiralshaped curve around the axis of rotation of said control member, all of said teeth being arranged in one and the same plane, and each of said teeth being co-ordinat'ed with one of said characters and extending over a radial angle of less than 36 with said radial angle being defined by the radii extending from the roots of therespective mined printing position, means supported by said reciprocable means and comprising a plurality of steps for co-operation with said teeth, at least one of said steps being arranged for co-operation with a plurality of said teeth, said steps being arranged so that in the inoperative position of said reciprocable means the printing element of the lowest value is closest to said printing position.
3. In combination with a rotatable counter carrying individual characters forming elements of data to be recorded, a control member rotatably connected to said counter and provided with a plurality of teeth arranged along a spiral-shaped curve around the axis of rotation of said control member, all of said teeth being arranged in one and the same plane, and each of said teeth being co-ordinated. with one of said characters and extending over a radial angle of less than 36 with said radial angle being defined by the radii extending from the roots of the respective tooth to the point of intersection between said axis of rotation and said plane, a plurality of printing elements corresponding in number to the number of said characters and having each a difierent value co-ordinated with said characters and said teeth, reciprocable means supporting said printing elements and operable to move any of said printing elements into a predetermined printing position, means supported by said reciprocable means and comprising a plurality of steps for co-operation with said teeth, at least one of said steps being arranged for co-operation with a plurality of said teeth, the steps co-operating with the teeth coordinated with the lowest value printing elements being nearest to the printing elements.
4. In combination with a counter carrying a plurality of individual characters forming elements of data to be recorded, a control member rotatably connected to said counter and provided with a'plurality of teeth arranged along a spiral-shaped curve around the axis of rotation of said control member, each of said teeth being respectively co-ordinated with one of said characters and extending over an angle of less than 36, the number of said teeth equalling the number of said characters minus 1, said radial angle being formed by the lines extending from the adjacent roots of said first and last tooth to a point located both on the axis of rotation of said control member and in the plane of said teeth and forming the apex of said angle, a plurality of printing elements corresponding in number to the number of said characters and having each a different value co-ordinated with said characters and said teeth, reciprocable means supporting said printing elements and operable to move any of said printing elements into a predetermined printing position, means supported by'said reciprocable means and comprising a plurality of steps for co-operation with said teeth, at least one of said steps being arranged for co-operation with a plurality of said teeth, and abutment means limiting the maximum movement of said reciprocating means into said printing position for typing that charplurality of printing acter of said counter not represented by a tooth of said control member.
5. In combination with a counter carrying a plurality of individual characters forming elements of data to be recorded, a control member rotatably connected to said counter and provided with a plurality of teeth arranged along a spiral-shaped curve around the axis of rotation of said control member, each of said teeth being respectively co-ordinated with one of said characters and extending over an angle of less than 36 with each tooth arranged immediately ad- 'jacent another tooth while the first and last tooth are spaced from each other by a radial angle of at least 72, said radial angle being formed by the lines extending from the adjacent roots of said first and last tooth to a point located both on the axis of rotation of said control member and in the plane of said teeth and forming the apex of said angle, a plurality of printing elements corresponding in number to the number of said characters and having each a different value coordinated with said characters and said teeth, reciprocable means supporting said printing elements and operable to move any of said printing elements into a predetermined position, means supported by said reciprocable means and comprising a plurality of steps for co-operation with said teeth, at least one of said steps being arranged for co-operation with a plurality of said teeth.
6. In combination with a counter carrying the numerals 0, 1 to 9 forming elements of data to be recorded, a control member rotatably connected to said counter and provided with eight teeth integral with each other and arranged along a spiral-shaped curve around the axis of rotation of said control member, each of said teeth being co-ordinated with one of said numerals and extending over a radial angle of less than 36 formed by the lines extending from the roots of the respective tooth to a point lying both on the axis of rotation of said control member and also in the plane containing all of said eight teeth, a elements corresponding in number to the number of said numerals, reciprocable means supporting said printing elements and operable to move any of said printing elements into a predetermined printing position, means supported by said reciprocable means and comprising a plurality of steps for co-operation with said teeth, one of said steps being arranged for co-operation with the teeth co-ordinated with the numerals l, 2 and 3.
7. In combination with a counter carrying a plurality of individual characters in the form of numerals 0., 1 to 9 forming elements of data to be recorded, a control member rotatably connected to said counter and provided with nine teeth arranged along a spiral-shaped curve around the axis of rotation of said control member with each of said teeth being respectively co-ordinated with one of said numerals and extending over a radial angle of less than 36, ten printing elements with each of said printing elements co-ordinated with one of said ten numerals, reciprocable means supporting said printing elements and operable to move any of said printing elements into a predetermined printing position, plate means supported by said reciprocable means and comprising a plurality of steps numbering less than the number of said teeth for co-operation with said teeth, said steps being adapted in co operation with said teeth to determine the respective move- 5 ment of said printing elements into printing position, thereby selecting the respective printing element which is to become operative, at least one of said steps being arranged for co-operation with a plurality of said teeth, and abutment means independent of said control member for determining the printing position of that printing element which corresponds to the numeral not represented by a tooth of said control member.

plurality of individual characters in the form of numerals 0, 1 to 9 forming elements of data to be recorded, a control member rotatably connected to said counter and provided with nine teeth arranged along a spiral-shaped curve around the axis of rotation of ,said control member with each of said teeth sequentially co-ordinated with the numerals 0, 1 to 8, each of said teeth extending over a radial angle of less than 36, ten printing elements corresponding to each of the numerals 0, 1 to 9 of said counter for respectively printing any of these numerals, reciprocable means supporting said printing elements, means supported by said reciprocable means and comprising a plurality of steps numbering less than the number of said teeth for cooperation with said teeth, said steps being arranged adjacent to each other with the step closest to said printing elements arranged for co-operation with those teeth which are co-ordinated with the numerals 1, 2 and 3, abutment means independent of said control member for determining the movement of said rec procable means into printing position for the numeral 9, and arresting means associated with said control member for temporarily arresting said control member in its respective position into which it is moved by said counter.

In combination with a counter carrying a plurality of individual characters in the form of numerals 0, 1 to 9 forming elements of data to be recorded, the control member rotatably connected to said counter and provided with nine teeth arranged along a spiral-shaped curve around the axis of rotation of said control member, with each of said teeth being respectively coordinated with one of the numerals 0, 1 to 8 and extending over a radial angle of less than 36, ten printing elements, each of said printing elements being co-ordinated with one of said 10 numerals, reciprocable means supporting said printing elements and operable to move any of said printing elements into a predetermined printing position, plate means supported by said reciprocable means and comprising a plurality of steps numbering less than the number of said teeth for co-operation with said teeth, said steps being adapted for co-operation with said teeth to determine the respective movement of said printing elements into printing position, thereby selecting the respective printing element which is to become operative, said steps being arranged adjacent to each other with the step closest to said printing elements arranged for co-operation with the teeth co-ordinated with the numerals 1, 2 and 3, and the step most remote from said printing elements arranged to co-operate with the tooth co-ordinated with the numeral 8, the steps intermediate said first-mentioned step and said last-mentioned step being arranged for cooperation with the teeth co-ordinated with the numerals 0, 4, 5, 6 and 7, and abutment means independent of said control member for determining the printing position of the printing element co-ordinated with the numeral 9.

In combination with a counter carrying a plurality of individual characters in the form of numerals 0, 1 to 9 forming elements of data to be recorded, a control member rotatably connected to said counter and provided with a plurality of teeth numbering less than the number of said numerals and arranged along a spiral-shaped curve around the axis of rotation of said control member, each of said teeth being respectively coordinated with one of said characters and extending over a radial angle of less than 36, a plurality of printing elements corresponding in number to the number of said characters and respectively co-ordinated with said numerals, reciprocable means supporting said printing elements and operable to move any of said printing elements into a predetermined position for printing the respective character, means supported by said reciprocable means and comprising a plurality of steps for co-operation with, but less in number than said teeth, one of said steps being arranged for co-operation with those teeth coordinated with the numerals 1, 2 and 3, and another one of said steps being arranged for cooperation with those teeth co-ordinated with the numerals 0 and 5, and abutment means arranged for oo-operation with one of said steps for cletermining the printing position of said character not represented by one of said teeth.
