rlhis invention relates to locks for sliding window sash, and has for its object a sash lock unit whichconsists of comparatively few compactly arranged parts and embodyingv an operating lever movable in one direction to release a latch lever, and a stop for limiting the movement of the operating lever so that continued force applied thereto serves to slide the sash to open it and relieve the latch lever of the sash sliding force, and a stop for limiting the pivotal movement of the operating lever in the opposite direction to slide the sash to closed position after releasing the latch lever so that it is free to ratchet into latching or locked position.
The invention consists in the novel features and in the combinations and constructions hereinafter set forth and claimed.
In describing this invention, reference is had to the accompanying drawing in which like characters designate corresponding parts in all the views.
Figure 1 is an elevation of one form of window with sliding sash embodying this invention.
Figure 2 is an enlarged face view of the sash lock, the contiguous portion of the sash being also shown.
Figures 3 and 4 are sectional views taken on line 3-3 and line 4 4, Figure 2.
The sash lock is here shown as embodied in a horizontally sliding sash, such as are used in busses.
I designates the sliding sash mounted in a window frame 2 and shown as slidable horizontally into and out of position relatively to another sash 3 mounted in the window frame. Each sash I and 3 fills substantially one-half of the opening of the window frame 2. The sash 3 may also be a sliding sash.
4 designates the sash lock. This comprises an elongated flat base plate 5 mounted on an upright frame member of the sash I and secured thereto as by fastening members I5. The base plate 5 is provided with an angular flange or wall 1 extending lengthwise along one edge, as the inner edge thereof with respect to the sash member on which the base plate is mounted, and also with angular bearing lugs 8 at the upper and lower ends of the flange or wall 'I. 9 is a. latch lever, this being angular or curved in general form and pivoted at I to the base plate 5 about midway between the upper and lower ends thereof, the outer arm of the lever extending beyond the other edge of the base plate in position to coact with an opening II in the window frame 2. The inner arm of the latch lever 9 extends at I2 into the space enclosed by the wall 1 andbearing lugs 8. The Iatch lever lies nat- Wise against the base plate.
I3 designates the operating lever which is elongated, or oblong,v Vin general form, this being mounted between the bearing lugs 8 and abutting against Vthe same, and being pivoted thereto by means of axial pins I4 extending through the bearing lugs. The operating lever I3 has a cylindrical hub I 5 fitting the space confined by the wall 'I and lugs 8, an elongated outwardly extending finger engaging arm or ange, and an inwardly extending arm or flange I6 extending toward the base plate and located to slidably engage the inwardly extending arm I2 of the latch lever 9 when the operating lever I3 is moved in one direction, as to the left Figure 3, the arm or nange I 6 slidably engaging the inner edge of the arm I2 of the latch lever 9 and in so doing moving the lever 9 about its pivot I0 and unlatching it from the openingv II in the window frame. After the unlatching is effected, additional force applied to the left to the operating lever I3, slides the sash I to open it more or less. When the sash I is open, and a closing force is applied to the operating lever I3 to the right to close the sash,
the operating lever I3 moves to the right and thereby releases the lever 9, permitting it to ratchet into the opening II. While the sash is moving to closed position, the closing force is applied to the right to the operating lever I3.
In order to relieve the latch lever of the sash opening force, stops I'I are provided on the base plate in position to engage the ange or arm I6 after it has been moved far enough to disengage the latch lever 9.
I8 designates a housing or cap for the latch lever, this being mounted on the base plate and being of substantially the length of the operating lever I3. The housing I8 is mounted on the base plate and secured thereto as by fastening members or rivets I9, and also by the pivot I0 of the latch lever 9.
The housing is provided with a slot 20 along one edge, through which the outer arm of the latch lever 9 extends. The latch lever 9 is biased toward latching position by a spring 2| located in the housing, it being shown as coiled about the pivot pin I0 and having an arm at one end thrusting at 22 against one of the rivets I9, and an arm 23 at its other end thrusting against the inner arm I2 of the latch lever 9. The flange I6 abuts against the wall 1, Figure 4, during the closing of the sash, and a stop shoulder on the hub of the operating lever I3 at the same time engages the top of the housing I8.
Owing to the construction of this sash lock, it
is particularly compact and flat in construction, provides a wide hand or finger hold, the hub of which serves as a closure, and the nger hold acts as a rigid handle by which the operating force to slide the sash is applied directly to the base plate.
What I claim is: g y
A sliding-sash lock comprising an elongated at base plate for attachment to the window sash,
the plate having an angular Wall along one,
lengthwise edge thereof and bearing lugs at the ends of said wall, a latch lever angularlnv gen` eral form pivoted to the base plate andhaving an outwardly extending arm projectingbeyond the other lengthwise edge of the base plate, an elongated operating lever pivotally 4mounted to said bearing lugs and extending between the same,
and having a hub substantially lling the space y 4 and the distance between the bearing lugs, the housing having a slot through which the outer arm of the latch lever extends, and a spring located in the housing and acting on the latch lever to move it to latched position, the base plate being formed with stops located to limit the movement of the operating lever when moved in one .direction to release the latch lever, and the operating lever having a stop thereon arranged to engage the top of the housing and limit the pivotal movement of the operating lever 'in the opposite direction.
