SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 257,774, dated May 9, 1882. I Application filed January12, 1882. (Model) To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, RACHEL P. SMITH, of Chicago, in the county of Cook, and in the State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Reciprocating WashingMachines; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, making a part of this specification.

This invention relates to certain improvements in washing and rinsing machines; and it has for its objects to provide an apparatus which may be readily applied and adjusted to a tub of any size or description, which can be folded so that the parts will be out of the way when not in use without removing the apparatus from the tub, and which will take up water from the tub and automatically supply it to the articles while being rubbed against the surface of the wash-board. These objects I attain by the apparatus illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 represents a perspective view of my apparatus entire secured to the upper edge of the tub. Fig. 2 represents a front view of the device, showing the parts in a folded po sition. Fig. 3 represents a detached view of one of the clamps for securing the frame to the edge of the tub, and Fig. 4 represents a cross-section of the rubbing device; Fig. 5, a longitudinal vertical sectional view of the rubber, showing the means ofsustaining the valve; and Fig. 6 is a horizontal sectional view of the rubber, looking down upon the valve and the opening below it, showing their relative arrangement.

The letter A indicates a rectangular frame, which is provided at its lower corners with bifurcated clamps 13, having binding-screws, by means of which the frame may be secured to the edge of the tub, as indicated in Fig. 1 of the drawings.

In operation the apparatus is arranged upon the tub as indicated in Fig. 1 of the drawin gs. The rubber rests upon the articles which are upon the face ofthe wash-board. The body of the rubber is then grasped by the operator and reciprocated back and forth over the articles. As the rubber dips in the water the valve yields and permits the water to enter the chamber L, and as it leaves the water the valve closes and the water escapes slowly through the apertures at the sides of the valve and through the articles on the board. When not in use the parts are folded as shown in Fig. 2 of the drawings.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-- V 1. In combination with the frame adapted to be secured to the edge otthe tub, the movable frame connected to the stationary frame by links, the adjustable extensions secured to the movable frame, and the pivoted rubber secured to said extensions, the whole adapted to operate substantially in the manner specified.
