' UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
BENJAMIN F. BROWN, OF HOUGHTON, MICHIGAN.
SLElGH-KNEE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 257,651, dated May 9, 1882. Application filed January 20, 1882. (No inodel.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, BENJAMIN F. BROWN, of Houghton, in the county of Houghton and State of Michigan, have invented a. new and useful Improvemeutin Sleigl1-Knees, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification,
. ing of the same.
The invention consists in asleigh-knce made with a horizontally projecting flange around its upper part near its upper end, and downwardly-projecting flanges upon the sides of its lower end, and having holes to receive the fastening-bolts and recesses and holes to receive the strengthening-pins; also,in the combine. tion, with the runner and the beam, of a knee having a horizontally-proj ectin g flange around its upper part, and downwardly projecting flanges at the sides of its lower end bolts for fastening the knee to the beam, and pins for strengthening the connection between the rugner and beam, whereby a strong, durable, and firm connection is formed between the said runner and beam; and, also, in the projection rising above the top flange to enter the beam,
whereby the fastening-bolts are relieved from g the strain, as will be hereinafterfully described.
A represents the runner, B the beam, and G the rave, of a sleigh. D is the knee, which is cast of malleable iron.
The kneeD is made hollow, and with a horizontally-projectin g flange, E, around its upper part at a little distance from its upper end,the projecting upper end, D, being designed to enter a recess in the lower side of the beam B to relieve the fastening-bolts from the strain.
The lower end of the knee D rests upon the runner A or upon a plate, F, placed upon the upper side of the said runner A, is flared in front and rear, and has downwardly-projecting flanges G uponits side edges to overlap the sides of the runner A or plate F.
In the flange at the sides of the upper end of the knee D are formed holes H, to receive the bolts I, which pass through them and through holes in the beam B.
In the front and rear edges of the flange E are formed recesses J, and in the projecting parts of the lower end of the knee D are formed [holes K, to receive the strengthening-pins L,
which pass through them,'through holes in the beam B and rave G, and into holes in the runner A, as shown in Fig. 1.
- The rave 0 isbent downward in front and rear of the beam B, and its ends are secured to the upper side of the runner A.
With this construction the knee will be strong and durable, and will form a firm connection between the beam and runner.
With this construction, also, should the knee be broken, it can be readily replaced with a new one without its being necessary to take the sleigh to a mechanic.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent vided with the horizontal flange E around its upper part, a little below its upper end, D, having perforations H in its sides to receive the fastening-bolts and recesses J in its front and rear to receive the strengthening-pins, and having its lower end flared at the front and rear and provided with perforations K and flanges, substantially as set forth.
2. The combination, with the runners A,--'the beam B, having its lower side recessed, and the brace O, perforated and having its epdssecured to the runners, of the knee D, provided with the perforated and recessed flange E around its upper part, a little below the upper end, D, and downwardly-projecting flanges G on the sides of its flaring lower part, the fastening-bolts I, and the strengthening-pins J, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
BENJAMIN FRANKLIN BROWN.
