(No Model'.) r F.l E. SAGENDORPH.
. `lvIETALLIG JOINT FOR FLEX1BLBR00'PING. No. 257,616. PatentedMay-Q, 1882.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
FRANK E. SAGENDORPH, OF CINCINNATI, OHIO.
METALLIC JOINTl FOR FLEXIBLE ROOFING.
, SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 257,616, dated May 9, 1882.
Application tiled January Q5, 188;. (No model.)
VTo all whom it may concern:
Beitknown that I, FRANK E. SAGENDORPH,
of Cincinnati, in the county of Hamilton and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Metallic Joints for Flexible Roofing; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification.
Figure l is a plan view, a portion ot' one of the roofing-strips having been partially unfolded for the purpose of more fully illustrating the invention; and Fig. 2 is a sectional view on the line a x, Fig. l.
Similar letters of reference indicate correspending parts in both figures.
'Ihis invention relates to a metal Ajoint for rooting, constructed of exible material, such as canvas, felt, paper, cloth, asbestus, and the like; and it consists in the improvedconstruc` tion ot' said joint, which will be hereinafter fully described, and particularly pointed out in the claim. il
In the drawings hereto annexed, A represents a strip ot' sheet metal, the lower edge of which is bent or doubled, as shown at 13,'so as to form a smooth ormounded edge, C.
D D are the strips ofrooiing materiahwhieh, as stated, may be of paper, felt, clot-l1, or any other suitable 'flexible material., The lowermost strip, D, having been put in place upon the roof, as shown, and having its sides and j lower edge secured by nails or tacks,I place and protecting them from the damaginginiueneesofthe weather. Upon the upper edge of strip D', I now place the lower edge of another rooting-strip,on top ofthis another strip,
A, and ,proceed as before until'the entire root is covered.
In this manner a neat, durable, and water- .proof joint is formed rapidly and in an inex- I The rounded edge C of the pensive manner. metallic joint-strip A protects the rooting maf. terial from heilig' eut or injured, and the roofing material is in this manner fastened more securely than by other methods with which I am acquainted.`
Having thus described my invention, I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States- 'Ihe herein-described joint ior flexible root ing, consisting of the combination of a lower sheet, an nppershcet whose undertnrned lower edge is applied to register with the upper edge of the lower sheet, a strip otl sheet metal havingl its lower edge bent or doubled under so as to form a smooth rounded lower edge, and interposed within the fold of the upper sheet, and suitable fastenings passing through the said sheets, underneath, and covered by the outer fold ot' the upper sheet, as set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto afxed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
FRANK E. SAGENDORPH.
